Which big invention is best to make, to achieve Master Inventor (100 big inventions)? So far, I've just been making floor strips, but if there's a better time/materials/profit ratio making something else, I'd prefer to do that.

If I recall reading correctly in either the guide or on the forum, the strip is the best one to make for that challenge.

Yeah it's most definitely is, but that skill challenge is really time-consuming to do.

It's worth it, the masterful harvester adds fun and doesn't make you sick, and the miner isn't noisy, the strip doesn't make you sick and the time machine adds a new buff on top of time traveling.  Also, all widgets and toys are masterful, better than improved.

Of course the pop-up message you get when you complete it says you made FIFTY big inventions (which would make more sense).

My inventor is now juggling 2 simbot offspring, one time machine child, and a brand new wife. I wonder what she thinks of having 3 immaculately conceived step-kids.

Thank you very much for this topic! I didn't know there was a way to get fun with the harvester.

I've been browsing these forums for some time, and I have finally developed the courage to ask a question!

After speed-reading this thread to find the answer myself and coming up empty, I'll pull up my britches and ask myself! (Again, I sort of skimmed so it's likely that I just glossed over it. :D)

Is it normal for there to be a "Try for a baby" and "Woohoo" options on the time machine (in both the past AND future. Who knew my Sims were so outgoing?)? I suppose I have never noticed it before because my inventor Sims have all been lonely and without love. I've read that some of you have come back with a randomly conceived child, though I wasn't sure if that was in reference to the options or just pure randomness. I'm running Ambitions and World Adventures if that means anything.

I've experienced married Sims not getting the "Try for baby" or WooHoo option. I've also had romantic interest (only) couples get that option. I am fairly certain they both need to be on the home lot at the same time.  I've had Sims come back from a Try for Baby time trip and I've been able to send them right back again while sending off a single Sim needs to wait before they time travel again.

I've gotten "children" from the past and future from a couple's trip and even had a small child show up because a solitary Sim changed history somehow.

I'm not sure how random it is.

I got a random child, I think they will grow up to be exactly like their parent so like A male version and a female version of the parent combined... That worked in my head but so does a lot of things that don't elsewhere!  :D

I'm not sure how random it is.

It's the Sims, so it going to be Very!  ;)

I've been missing out, I think, by not playing "up close". I had no idea my simbot had lipstick and eye color! I wonder how many people play the game so close, and how it affects the feel of the game.

Burning discoveries
« Reply #161 on: August 04, 2010, 08:18:48 PM »
Poking aroung with traits and sim types, I made a couple discoveries:
- The Immune To Fire trait, does not stop an inventor sim from randomly catching fire and burning to death at the table. I thought I had the brilliant solution to prevent that frustrating little event, made a Firefighter, leveled up to the required level to pass on the related traits, and tested them through normal methods. The sim had the trait. Thinking I had beaten the system, I set my supposedly fireproof sim to inventing and walked away to get a sandwich. I came back to one less sim and a pile of ash in front of the inventing table. Dad was off at work, so was not there to extinguish Jr.

-In any normal situation, a mummy is a pile of ash waiting to happen when it comes to fires. A mummy with a penchant for playing with welding torches however, does not catch on fire OR get electrocuted. A typical sim, with or without the Lucky or Unlucky traits, can catch on fire up to several times an hour, separated only by the time it takes to jump in the shower and get back to inventing. I had a mummy sim sitting around and decided to give them a try. Ten levels of invention skill leveling later, not one single spark, even with Unlucky.

As a general rule, all of my inventors and sculptors are unlucky, to prevent the loss of hours of work to a random ignition when I am not paying attention.

I'm really surprised to read that, because my inventor has never had a fire, and he's got aging off. However, I intentionally put the workbench on an outdoor porch away from the house. I wonder if it's indoor benches that cause fires.

While playing in the Random Wishmaker's Quartet challenge, all 4 of my sims worked their inventing skill up to level 10.  They all used the same bench (which was outside).  Three of them never caught fire, one of them caught fire 3 times (maybe more).  He never died from it though, every time he was able to get to the shower and extinguish himself.  I'm not sure why he caught fire so many times when the others never did, although another odd thing about him is he almost always hated nectar (would get negative moodlet from drinking nectar, even when the other 3 got a positive moodlet from the same bottle).

I always set my benches indoors or in a garage/work shed.  If they are in a garage or work shed I always put a shower and a toilet stall in the same space. The stall is for convenience and the shower is for putting out the butt fires.

I think you're definitely missing out by not playing up close.  For me, it makes an incredible difference.  And now I'm wondering if your style of playing is part of the problem you're having with the camera for the still life portraits.

The expressions on your sims are so funny, well unless someone dies then the sims look so upset they will die aswell, I would post a picture of a sim witnessing death but that is off topic - there is one in The Character Legacy Latest Chapter...  :'(

Back on Topic - I always place my benches in the basement or their own room, in a little niche or empty area.

I've got a workshop in my current house (the Landgraab Mansion).  It's got an inventing table, two sculpting thingies, a shelf with all the inventions displayed, and the town trophies displayed.  I don't bother putting a shower right in the room because my Sims have always been able to make it to the nearest bathroom in plenty of time.  Now that I've said that, I'll probably have one die of fire.  ;D

If it has been said before, I apologize, but my baby keeps interrupting me so I am unable to read all the pages in this topic. (I have tried half a dozen times over the past 2 days and yes I forgot to read it while she slept!  lol)

I discovered when I played an inventor that I had the reward "no bills" and I detonate on community lots and get fined, I do not have to pay the fine.  In SV I blew up the airplane statue at the military base, I got almost 2000 scrap from it along with a fine for 67,000+ which said I would be sent.  I never received it.  And my monies were never reduced.  I am assuming that it was because of the reward I had.  Or is this a bug? Anyone else know about this for sure?

One of my Sims had reached the inventing skill level that gave them a request from the Science Lab to gather items for a Simbot. A couple of days after they got the request to bring the heart shaped pink diamond an icon appeared on the town map (Sunset Valley) that denoted a pink diamond location. I collected it, but kept it uncut in my inventory. A few days later another icon appeared and I collected that diamond and kept it uncut in my inventory. Eventually I acquired 4 pink diamonds this way although it took a couple of sim weeks to do so. If you are inclined to acquire the inventing skill and are in no big hurry to actually build the Simbot then you may be able to collect extra pink diamonds for more Bots or extra $$$.  ;D

Even better than the corner shower to me (since it could conceivably be being used by a spouse, and yes, I had this happen to my first inventor, the darn housemate wouldn't get out of the shower in time to extinguish my poor little flamebe'd Sim) I like to keep my Inventor sim stocked with a stack of 'Showers in a Can' from WA.  Sure they're a little spendy, but isnt' your Sim worth it?

With that technique, you can put your inventing tables just about anywhere. Makes me wonder about having one in a public place.... Perhaps I'll try that soon.

Whoa, I didn't know the explosives were so powerful! Because my house was far, far away from the junkyard and I like free scrap, I used buydebug to place four large piles a bit away from the house so as to not accidentally detonate something in the house.

So, I place an explosive on one of the piles, and obviously they all blow up. A split second later, the entire house blows up - everything that could be ruined was ruined. I had to replace every single furniture piece aside from the large hot tub, the inventor's table, and the car, which somehow avoided the explosion.

So yeah, I'm not gonna try to do that again.
