The Loony Bin
« on: October 17, 2009, 06:05:19 PM »
After seeing the madness of igzigpuffs thread I've decided to try the asylum challenge myself but well, there's a reason I haven't done challenges before; I just don't like to follow the rules. So I've modified the rules slightly to make it more fun for me. :)

First of all the traits. My playable sim is supposed to be a loser but I don't like that trait. I tried it and it doesn't seem to do anything really except to give them a Winner moodlet when they're promoted. Also if I want to keep playing this sim after the challenge is over I don't want to play a loser. :P

So I picked Ambitious (there's something creepy about an ambitious lunatic), Handy (for all the things she will need to fix), Green thumb and Loves the outdoors (so she can escape the madness and hide in the garden). Oh and of course she's insane, they all are. Her lifetime wish is a perfect garden.

My sim is only supposed to go to work, the grocery store and the book store but I've decided to let her accept opportunities even if it means going somewhere else. I think it will be healthy for her to get out more and I like opportunities. ;D

As for the other 7 sims, they all have to have the traits Insane, Hates the outdoors and Absent-minded. The last two can be anything except Natural cook, Brave and Daredevil. Well I want a brave daredevil. Daredevil for the entertainment, brave because I intend for my sim to have a job and I don't want to have her come home to see her house burned down with seven crisp sims inside.

So these are The Seven Lunatics:

Easily Impressed and Hot Headed
Neurotic and Excitable
Childish and Inappropriate
Good and Unlucky (Fire!!!)
Technophobic and Vegetarian (Tofu Dogs!)
Evil and Good sense of humor (Mwuahahaaa!)
Brave and Daredevil

Should be some fun in this.

I've built a big fancy house with lots of decorations to soothe the loonies. I will probably regret this when I have to replace things, not to mention when the bill comes. O_O

More later. I never remember to take screenshots so don't be expecting those.

After about 5 days already I have had a fire (on the very first day and it wasn't even the unlucky sim; this won't end well...), two puddles and a sim passed out in the middle of the livingroom after drinking two cups of coffee. Also everything in the house which can break has been broken. I didn't replace the stove right away because I was saving the money to pay the first bill.

I'm surprised at how often they go outside. The evil sim especially, he likes to go outside at night, attempt to strangle himself then go back in. What's up with that? Split personalities?

I'm starting to like playing insane sims.

I love how they like to catch flies and eat them, just like Renfield in Dracula.

My sim had the following wish today: Imply Mother is a Llama. O_o

PJSim,

Your rule changes have completely change the dynamics of the Asylum Challenge.  Of course, anyone can play their game in any way they wish.  But you're not really playing THIS Asylum Challenge if you change so many of the rules.  You're taking away a lot of the challenge itself.  The things that make it difficult and, therefore, a challenge.  Also, if you're going to keep track of the points as described in the original rules, you won't be able to compare your score fairly to others because you didn't play by the same rules.

Hopefully, you've already thought of all this and have it covered in your own gameplay.  I just thought I should point it out to you in case you hadn't thought that far ahead.

Have fun playing it!  :)

Yeah, I thought of that so I don't intend to keep score.

I didn't really want to play it as a challenge anyway, I mean trying to finish as fast as possible, I like to give my crazy sim some time off. I guess I'm just not competitive enough. :D
I do use most of the rules though because it's fun. Only 5 beds and 6 seats, no repairmen. Lots of complaining.

I noticed that after having my sim sleep in the same bed for three nights in a row the other sims consider this bed to be hers and never use it, nice. Sometimes they go in and make the bed though.

Oh and I am having lots of fun, thanks! ;D

Hey PJSim, glad you're trying the challenge!  I think you will like trying the insane trait.
I know the rules were pretty strict, but I'm such a rule follower...must be the "goody-two-shoes in me!  :-\  I suppose it's like they say "rules are made to be broken", as long as you are enjoying your game play....that's what really counts!  :D

I'm not very competitive either and don't put much stock in point taking.  I haven't decided whether to post my own score when I finish.  8)

I also didn't like the loser trait (amongst the many used in this challenge), but I figure any of the traits I don't like when I finish my challenge I will change with the "mid-life crisis" lifetime reward.  I guess this is really why I tried the challenge, it forced me to tryout traits I never use.  :o

As for the picture taking...Yikes I don't blame you for not taking them, that most certainly is the reason this challenge is taking me so long.  I am constantly pausing the game to try and get a good shot and I always play at normal speed!  I have never shot so many pic's as I have in this game.  I usually just shoot an interesting pic now and again just to share on the forums.  This challenge and story telling takes picture taking to a whole new level.

So far your story sounds like it's off to a great start.  Look forward to you updates!  ;)

Happy Simming!  :D

I had the same thing happen with my Sim and the bed.  She slept in the same one every night and the others left it alone.  She never had a problem getting a full night's sleep.  I didn't have as much drama as I expected.  I think only one fire that was easily put out.  Other than that, it was just a lot of puddles on the floor and the inmates hollering at each other.  Lol!

Ah yes, puddles. :D
It doesn't help that after they're done doing the thing toilets were designed for they will linger and speak to the toilet for a long time while sims will be peeing on the floor outside the door. And then they will be queuing for the shower. ::)

And igzig, I can imagine the pictures taking a long time, this is the first game I've played on normal speed the entire time and it's taking ages!

It's fun playing with all these traits I've never used before, when I clean out their inventories I look at their moodlets to see if there are any I haven't seen.
The neurotic sim gets a positive "Calm" moodlet from checking the stove or sink. At first I thought well, this is not bad, you can have the sim check the stove before going to work and getting this nice moodlet. :) But then I realized she also gets a negative moodlet from not checking the stove/sink whenever she uses them so no thanks. :P

Actually the neurotic, excitable sim creeps me out a little. You see she's also overweight because I was interested to see if a sim would loose weight when left on their own. Well, not likely!
One day I saw her throwing up in the bathroom. I thought she might have eaten spoiled food but I was pretty sure there hadn't been any, then I worried if sims can get sick and die in this game like earlier games... Finally I checked her moodlets and it turned out she was stuffed! From eating when not hungry, oh no, no wonder you're too heavy girl!!!
I thought sims would never eat when they're not hungry unless you make them. And I've had sims be stuffed before (from those eating contests) but they've never thrown up.
Eating too much when not hungry and then throwing up, that's a serious eating disorder! :o
And her lifetime wish is to be a superstar athlete.

Oh no.

An eating disorder, prone to random hysterical outbursts, obsessed with fame in an area she seems unlikely to succeed in; I've made a reality show contestant!!! :o :D :D :o

Actually maybe this is a little too real. :-\

I had an overweight inmate, too.  She lost weight, though.  There wasn't much for them to do except paint, play guitar, and work out.  Once she started getting on the treatmill, she got thinner.  If she missed her time on it, she'd get heavy again.  Mostly she was thin once she got started.

I noticed igzig had a patient who lost weight too. Mine is at level 2 athletic now so we'll see.

Well, I'm doing one of Metro's challenges right now but when I get back to this...

What Pam says is true, if my Sherry or Gavin don't workout every day, they revert back to their original weight.  That just doesn't seem right.  They should be able to skip a day at least without exercising!  >:(  ;)

Everyday?! :o

No that doesn't seem fair at all. :P

Anyway I haven't been playing my loony bin much because I got caught up in some other challenges but I have been looking in on them and this hilarious thing happened.

One of the sims is a daredevil and I was starting to regret that, that trait just seemed entirely disappointing. I have tried playing a daredevil and that wasn't so interesting and now I've been watching a daredevil and he didn't do anything interesting at all. I thought with all those other sims around he would want to show off but no. Until...

There was a second fire. My sim and the daredevil both rushed to put it out and it was out quite quickly so I thought everything was fine until I saw flames in the back of the room. It was the daredevil!! His butt was on fire!!! :o

And he was just standing there, I thought he was going to die. :'( But then it turned out he was just waiting for someone to notice him, suddenly he ran like a madman (duh) through the house, screaming, with his butt on fire!! He ran screaming the whole way to the bathroom and jumped in the shower and put out the flames. :D :D :D

I was so surprised I only caught him at very last moment:

 :D :D :D :D :D

HA HAA, now I'm seriously considering giving them a fireplace to see what will happen. :D

Haha yeah, but that will be for later. This weekend I formatted my hard disk and installed a new OS so everything had to be reinstalled and my savegame for this didn't survive the move.

I could find these sims in the bin and start over but instead I've decided to try playing this challenge by the rules. So no daredevil for now. After my playable sim has reached her lifetime goal I intend to mess around with their traits and bring the daredevil back. And buy a fireplace. ;D

My sim wants to max logic and handiness, it shouldn't be too hard with all the stuff they're breaking.

Immediately after my sim went off to work this happened!!

Aaahh!!!

Well I found out that she can leave work to call the fire department and then go back to work. No one died but now they have no money again. :P

Oh my...nice fire!  :o  I guess you just can't trust those insane Sims!  :-\  Yes, if I had not read some other stories I wouldn't have known to send my Sim home to call the fire department either, I really like that they can leave work without getting fired!  :D

Oh wow, I like that! This makes the game so much more realistic. Because it is probably in their genes that these sims are overweight by nature. And that works the other way around, too. They can work out until they collapse, but if you miss a session, you can expect some new kg's.
