Meteor Shower!
« on: June 10, 2010, 11:22:45 AM »
I usually send my sim, Josh down to the consignment shop to see what's on sale on most days.  This time when he clicked into his truck a sign appeared, all pink..."Josh noticed it getting dark all of a sudden."  I kept looking around but there was nothing weird I could see.  He gets to the consignment shop and I panned out to look around and see smoke coming from his house.  :o  I send him home and there are meteors everywhere.  Between him (daredevil) and the girl across the street, they managed to put out the fire.  He got about $5,000 from all the meteors lying around.  I was so shocked I never got any pics.  :D

So if you see one of these signs, move fast cause you're about to get smacked.  :D

Very exciting!  I can't wait for something like this to happen in my game.  So far I haven't even had an earthquake, and I have not one but TWO level 10 firefighters!

Oh wow, So cool. I didn't know those could happen to someone who was not a firefighter. I thought it would be a job for them. Awsome. Can't wait for it to happen in my game.

I had a meteor shower when one of my sims was using the telescope.  It destroyed everything that was outside and left big craters.  The money realized by selling the meteors barely covered the cost of replacing everything.  If, as I read somewhere, meteor showers are more likely when sims are using telescopes, my sims will be doing without their telescopes in future.

According to the Prima Guide, if you see that shadow overhead, you better run! It will kill your Sim it if strikes in the right spot.

Hrm... I think I better move my family into an actual house before I buy a telescope then.  Right now they're living in the wild outdoors.   ;D

It happened to me while I was at work, it sizzled everybody who worked in the Hospital, and it killed my boss Morgana Wolff.  This was my 3rd or 4th day of work.  I didn't get a new boss, and didn't get any more books to read for research.

How on earth did you fulfil the Research meter without the books?! Or was it through doing the new Ambitions related activities?

I didn't.  The Research Meter stayed at Yellow the entire game.  I made it to World Class Surgeon with both my Sims regardless.  (I am playing an "ER" game, since i am new to the Sims, and I thought having my two Sims in the same profession would simplify things to start).

Something I forgot to mention:  after the meteor shower that destroyed all my sim's outdoor possessions, she had a constant "disgusted" moodlet on her lot.  I couldn't find anything that would have been causing that moodlet - I had filled in the big craters outside, and as far as I could tell, there was nothing different inside the house.  I didn't want to deal with that negative moodlet every time she was at home so I wound up deleting the game.

Sure I could have moved, but I was playing a private investigator and frankly, it got boring very quickly.  I likely wouldn't have played that game much longer anyway.  It would have been nice to know what was causing that disgusted moodlet though, in case it ever happens again.  Saltypaws, how would you get rid of the moodlet?  And if you did, wouldn't it just come back unless you got rid of whatever was causing it?

If you have testingcheatsenabled true just control+click it and the moodlet goes away. I don't know if it would come back though! I don't know if I'm lucky or unlucky. I have not had any crazy things like that! I think I'm gonna start a new game and use the telescope, see if I can get some crazy screenshots!

EDIT Well I started a new game. It is now Week 2 Day 6 and other than finding 5 meteors,3 large 2 gigantic and finding a $7552 star, nothing weird has happened.

I guess all my games are weird-free!  >:(

Yippee! Week 3 Day 3 a meteor hit! it was very fun! I got singed from it and alot of peeps caught on fire! No one died though!

Ok, after its said and done, I'm not sure I like that! I had me a little garden right beside my 2 telescopes and the meteor took out one of my telescopes which is no biggie, but then it also messed up my plants! So I planted another garden on the other side of the lot far away from my telescope! I'm hoping I can still salvage my cheese and egg plants because I had just gotten them to perfect! If I can, I'm planting the rest away from my telescope!

Chances are it would come back if the game is bugged.  I've had that happen before and had to give up that game file.

You can get rid of moodlets by turning testingcheatsenabled true on and then shift clicking the moodlet.

If the moodlet is just stuck like mine was, it never did come back, but if there is something that you cannot find that is making the disgusted moodlet, then it will probably come back.  So far I have use testingcheats about three times to get rid of it and it did not come back.

Thanks for posting this Schipperke.  That's exactly what has happened to my sim, except his disgusted moodlet happens when he goes into the bedroom, next to where the meteor hit.  I have used testingCheatsEnabled, shift/click several times and the moodlet just comes right back.  I was thinking of moving him to another house, so I guess that's what I'll have to do. ::)

No one would believe me if I did not have pictures.  I started crazy eights challenge.  My sim went downtown to get the first two books, then the sky goes dark:

Bam, first meteor:

Then the second two hit:

Guess where it landed:

You got it, right on my challenge character, here is grimmy:

And poof, she is gone:

I had only started 10 minutes ealier, can you believe that.  So, since this is part of the game, I suppose that ends this challenge for me and I totally understand, it was just unfortunate.  See I should not have complained that I had not had a meteor.  Good grief, lol.

Thanks for the information on removing moodlets.  I've added it to my list of useful data not in the Prima guide.   :D

Saltypaws, how awful, losing your character to a meteor shower 10 minutes into the game!  I think that should be grounds for starting over.  It obviously wasn't your fault, and it happened early enough that it wouldn't really be a new game if you used the same character, more like a re-start.  Well, it's obviously not up to me, but that's my opinion for what it's worth.

Well, the thing is, it is part of the game and it is unfortunate that it happened, but, I truly understand if there is no do over and I really don't expect one.  Thank heavens that I was not towards the end of the challenge and it happened, then I would have really been upset.

I've not had any meteors yet, but if it's linked to the telescope or if that increases the likelihood of it, I've forgotten to unpack my family's telescope since they moved.
Saltypaws, that's awful luck! Although you've discovered what colour a meteor ghost is - every cloud has a silver lining? And like you said, at least it wasn't towards the end of the challenge.

Just my two cents worth, I think maybe there should be a clause in the rules somewhere that if something like this (nothing you did) happens within an hour of starting, you should get a second chance! I mean it was clearly nothing you as a player did, so I would give you a second chance, but that's just me! But Metro, Carl and Pam are cool people, maybe they will agree with me!

I"m thinking this is kind of like when one of Pam's challenge characters died in the swimming pool, even though the sim wasn't fatigued or anything.

I was told I could start over, but I sure didn't do the same thing the second time as I did the first time.  I was sure watching the top right corner, because I would have been so out of there, lol.  Too bad I didn't get to see how much that meteor was worth, by then I could not click on it.  I appreciate the do over.

Saltypaws, I'm so glad you're going to be restarting your challenge game!  You'll have a lot of fun with it.  Although maybe I should be wishing for all my competitors to drop out, then I wouldn't have to worry about coming in last.   ;D

Has anyone had meteors in any of the travel destinations?  I'm wondering if they happen there.  This is a big concern as my sims tend to live in tents while on vacation, and it would be nice to know if it's still safe for them to do so.  I can just picture a meteor shower totally destroying base camp in Egypt.

Just to give all Tournament players a heads up on this whole meteor issue, I'm contemplating just having a standing policy of allowing a redo in the event of death by meteor to a challenge character. So far it's only happened to Salty, but I'm pretty confident it's going to happen again. So, that's probably what will happen — sort of an "unwritten rule" that everyone knows about. Or I'll just spell it out as an exception to the one shot rule. But, I want to see if it happens again anytime soon.

I agree with Salty here! After I got hit by one meteor, that was enough for me, so I had her stop using the telescope. Week 9 Jamie and her daughter were just minding their own business, Jamie was getting ready to tend the garden and Patty was getting ready for work and I got the little notification that the sky got dark. I immediately paused it and orbed them away from the house. It took out my dryer, hamper, bookcase AND my $5300 bed! It also broke my shower, so I have fires going, and puddles forming everywhere! And neither one of them had been using the telescope for at least several weeks! I'm thinking I might just sell it!

I've had crazy good luck ever since I started playing the game last year.  I've only had a handful of deaths that weren't from old age.  Three, I think.  I wonder if my luck will hold out with these meteor showers or will my Sim be wiped out while I watch, paralyzed with shock.

Ummm, Pam, you just said the same thing I did, first I said I had not had any earthquakes, I had one.  Then I said, I had not had any meteors, then the next day I had one.  I am keeping my mouth shut from now on, lol.

We are here for ya Pam.

I think it was worth around $5000. Not even enough to cover the bed much less the other things I lost. I'm also keeping my mouth shut from now on! I at first thought it would be fun, but it's not worth it! I mean if the meteor was worth $30,000 maybe, but not $5000 when the bed it destroyed was $5300!

You would think that if a meteor was going to destroy something, it would at least have the nerve to be worth something, lol, or like mine, be at a community lot.  I wonder when a meteor hits downtown, if the mark stays there or eventually goes away.  Since I had just started and did not save, I have no idea, all I know, it looked like a lot of damage to the sidewalk.

I'm probably facing imminent disaster, then.  My Sim just married the Twinbrook Rock Star, DeAndre Wolff or something like that.  He was living with the hyphenated family.  I kicked them out except for the toddler who is now being raised by strangers.  Perfect time for a natural disaster.

What do you mean by 'orbed' them away from the house? Do you just mean you told them to run? Or is there some orb machine I haven't heard about?

I wonder has anyone had a meteor hit a multi-storey house yet? Mine is 4 stories high (plus 2 levels of basement) so I'd be interested in what a meteor might do to it.

Honestly, if a meteor was going to hit, it would not matter, it would probably hit anything it found.  If it is going after a particular sim, they will find them, scary thought,  lol.

I meant teleported. I have testingcheatsenabled and I just shift+clicked away from the house and teleported them. I really love Charmed and when they teleport, it reminds me of when Leo or Paige orb. Sorry for the confusion!

Yes, Charmed. It is an awesome show about sister witches that ran from 1998-2006. I would write more about it, but considering it has nothing to do with meteors, if you want to know more, you can PM me!

Edit: Yes, Wild! Did you like it too?

I was looking on the official forums, and someone had a meteor kill her sim's twin daughters while they were playing outside. How sad :'(

They also had one that hit the school and there was a dozen or so tombstones laying around.  They had some pictures of it too.  Really eerie looking.

I can't believe I forgot to mention this when I posted my results in the Grim Reaper Challenge today, but I got my first meteor strike. It wasn't today, but when I was playing that file a few days ago. One of my Clock sisters was looking through the telescope and I got the notice that a meteor was coming. All three sisters were skilling in the same area. I knew I had to act quickly, so I canceled all of their actions and moved them to the other side of the yard to wait. BABOOM!! That entire part of the yard where the telescope was went up in flames. Thankfully not much was taken out—the telescope obviously...an easel and an exercise machine. Oh, and the stereo too. But, man oh man...if I had not moved them, it's quite likely all 3 would have had an early finish to that challenge!

Man, I just thought of this! Normally if I get a meteor about to hit, I teleport them out of the way. When I get home and start this challenge, I hope my 3 elders are fast enough without teleporting cause if not, they will die quick! I hope those poor old pixels can RUN!!

So how far does "fireproof homestead" lifetime reward go in reference to this?  I got it for my inventor.  She kept catching on fire, so I figured it was a good idea.  ...I also figured being set on fire would be bad for a pregnant woman.

I'm torn between wanting this to happen in my game and not wanting it to happen.  Either way, I constantly back up my game... *knocks on wood*
