Building Contest
« on: June 11, 2010, 03:58:55 AM »
Calling all builders! We've got a new feature in the works here on the Forum. We will be hosting building contests for anyone who choses to participate. AriaGirl and samoht04 have put together some excellent rules and requirements for the first contest. It's still a work in progress, but at the moment we plan to have two weeks for submissions and then two weeks for voting. If it turns out members need more time (with real life intruding and everything), we'll change it to a month for submissions and a month for voting. Similar to the Caption Contests, there won't be any posts allowed other than the submitting of entries and voting. Chat will come after the contest is finished done.

We plan to launch the first Building Contest on July 1, 2010. AriaGirl has asked to post the rules and I expect she'll be the one to monitor the whole contest. TommyT is our building articles author and will hopefully be around to lend a hand, as well. Please bear with us as this is a major addition to the Forum and we may encounter some bumps along the way.

I hope everyone will enjoy this new addition to the Forum!  :)

Oh I love building. Before I started the challenges here, I think I spent about 60% of my simming time building.

It's the University of Cambridge's motto, means something along the lines of 'from here, we learn enlightenment and precious knowledge'.
Excited for this contest!

Hah! The reason why I didn't post this immediately was to see if someone else would come with the answer. This was deliberately... (No, really!)

I'm looking forward for a building contest. I wonder what the rules will be. And what you will expact from us builders. What does the building need to win. I have a lot of homes and buildings that are doing great on TheSims3.com. One was uploaded 94 times in less than a day! :D I really love building.

What does the building need to win.

The most votes. My understand of how AriaGirl is setting these up is it will run similarly to how I do the Caption Contests, so the builder to receive the most votes would win a given contest.

There may be a Building Ranking with a point scheme but that will be after a few trial runs I think, mainly to see how many people participate.

That won't be for awhile yet, if it happens at all.  It's almost impossible to design a ranking system around a contest where votes determine the winner.  We'll just take it one step at a time and see how it goes.

That's what I mean't if it seemed a little unclear. There will be some kind of Points Table but like Pam said we take it one step at a time.

And how do we receive those votes? I can upload a video to youtube, but that can't be done here, I believe. Of course we can upload photos but I think a video will provide a better view of the house. The space, the feeling. I'm not sure how to discribe this better.

@Leto - It will have to be photos.  You'll be allowed to submit a certain number of screenshots of your house.  Once the submission phase is over, we'll set up a poll for everyone to vote for their favorite.

Some people may even choose to download your house/lot from the exchange (via the link you provide) and have a look around it.  ;)

Edit:
Just looked at the Submission rules and it is a max of five pictures.

I'm not much of a builder and wasn't sure if I would participate in the new Building Contest.  But I just built a small one bedroom house for my Crazy Eight's Collector's Challenge Sim (Elvis Presley) and I managed to build him a cute little place for under $14,000.  I used tips from TommyT's article on building and I must say I'm pretty proud of myself!  :D

Well done Pam. I've always loved building, in fact when I was first shown the original Sims in a shop, it was because the shop assistant thought that it was something I could use to design houses and interiors. Of course it wasn't the type of program I was after, but controlling the Newbie fellow (can't remember his first name) as he mopped the floor somehow struck a chord and it wasn't very long after that I bought The Sims.
But back to building... I always find it satisfying to move my sims into houses I have built. Trouble is I tend to get carried away and my houses are usually not within a new sim's price range.

Than maybe that should be a rule, too. Build something within this and that price.
I wasn't going to upload my multi-milionaires mansion anyway, because living like that is just a matter of taste.

Hmmm, that could be a problem with other houses, too. It is always a matter of taste. How are you guys going to handle that?

Yeah, that's a given. Everyone participating in a building contest would need to start with the same funds to have a level playing field.

It is always a matter of taste. How are you guy's going to handle that?

Like I've said, it will be the most votes that wins. But, therein lies the dilemma of having any kind of meaningful ranking system for building contests.
