Ambitions Patch: 1.14/2.9/3.5/4.2
« on: July 08, 2010, 03:20:51 PM »
Finally! Though I haven't opened a game since installing the new Sims 3 patch, the patch notes looks promising. I'm not sure if all of the consignment store issues have been resolved or not. We'll see soon enough. If your a Tournament player, remember to patch up before advancing your character(s).

The “Possession is 9/10 of the Law” Lifetime Wish now requires your Sim steal items worth the appropriate number of Simoleons before being completed

Does this mean the car-issue hasn't been solved yet?

Sounds good!

I noticed, they haven't fixed the Family Tree aka My Sim Just Had A Mystery Baby In France/China/Egypt Bug.  My guess is that it'll be a tough one to fix.  :(

Well, I followed their directions, and I'm patched and my (challenge) game is running fine. I just added back my CC stuff. I can't tell from the names what they are, sadly. My crazy Sally likes to wear this shirt that I just loathe, usually just with panties or a bikini bottom. The shirt's got to be CC, but it's the first time I've seen it, so I guess I could be wrong. Maybe they have hidden wardrobe items only Sims with particular traits can wear, because she was still wearing it (not to mention showering in it) when I had all the CC removed. Oh well.

I'm thinking that I should load up the game I was playing right before I started the Challenge so I can see if they fixed being able to put your design sketches in your portfolio as a Stylist. I've reached the top of the career in that game, but my portfolio is only 52% full. Okay, this is almost certainly off-topic. If I post on it again I'll put it where I should. Under Ambitions, I think?

P.S. What the Mysterious Gnome is a "laundry bear"? Better not be that saccharine bit of fluff that sells fabric softener.   >:(

New Patch, New Problems
« Reply #5 on: July 08, 2010, 04:40:53 PM »
So I finished downloading the new patch, and I'm officially having problems... already. :(  Specifically one of my Wishmaster's is invisable.  And when I had him go and "plan outfit" I discovered why.  Here is what he now looks like, in all his glitchy glory.

Everyday Outfit

Formal Outfit

Sleepwear

Athletic Wear

Swimwear

It doesn't allow me to change any of his outfits or hairstyles (I tried the mirror too).  I have no cc or mods in my game, and I don't get any content from anywhere besides The Store and my game disks.  So that's not it.  My guess is that when they "fixed" the hairstyles bug they added some other bug that causes this.

For reference, here is what my guy looked like before this happened.  He's the third guy from the left.

Well, that stinks. One other thing, Aria. You can't change appearance (including clothing) at all in Wishmasters. The only thing you touch in CAS is the dice to roll the personality and LTW. And once your game starts that thinking continues. You don't change appearance. Not a huge deal, just wanted to let you know.

Oh, I'm aware of the rules.  I was just trying to see if I could solve the problem by switching outfits.  But I can't because it won't allow me to make any changes anyway.

Okay, I understand now. You patched up, then discovered your Sim was invisible, and then tried to change his outfit to rectify the problem. Gotcha.

So, the only way you can can spot him in the challenge game is he's got the green plumbbob above him?

Well, now that I have an invisible Sim I'm kind of wishing I hadn't installed it!

Metro- Yup, he's only got the plumbob, the rest of him is invisible.  Although after I exited "plan outfit" he now has this really awesome black line for a body, typical graphical error black line if you know what I'm talking about.  I exited without saving, restarted my computer, and I'm hoping that once I go back it'll be resolved... but I haven't worked up the nerve to give it a try yet.  Anyway, if he's just invisible, so be it.  It'll make it a bit more challenging to keep track of him during the challenge but it doesn't make it totally unplayable.  I can still tell him what to do, plus I have 3 other Sims who are working normally.  I was just hoping to be able to find some sort of fix before proceeding in that direction.

Nope, I don't have the doll.  I just went through my installed list to make sure.  I've only downloaded 2 things from The Exchange, ever.  One was the house for the Assylym Challenge, and the other was a Sim that looked like David Tennent.  Other than that, it's a super clean install with only Base Game, WA, Ambitions, and items from The Store.

From The Sims 3 website:

Before installing this game update, you must check for corrupt content that may be slowing down your game.  Follow these steps to remove the content before installing the game update:

If you have an object called "Girl Doll Dressed" in the Installed Content in your Launcher, please uninstall it.
To delete the file: 0x038a68fe04da61a6aa65f939d77fbc37.package, go into your DCBackups (C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\DCBackup), find the file and delete it.
If you had that file in your C:\Documents and Settings\your name\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\DCBackup folder, this may have attached itself to your exports. If you had that file and recently exported content to your Launcher, delete that content from your Export folder and your Launcher.
To install this update, please start your game and use the “Updates” tab in your Launcher.

Before installing an Update for The Sims 3, an Expansion Pack, or a Stuff Pack, it is a good idea to run through the following checklist to ensure your game continues to work smoothly.
If you have any questions about the below steps, please visit the Technical Support forum on the official Sims 3 community found at this URL: http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/forums/show/10.page

Step 1: Disable Custom Content

Custom Content is all Sims content that did not come from an official The Sims 3 Update, The Sims 3 Store, Expansion Pack, or Stuff Pack. Custom Content is created by 3rd Party Developers that are not regulated by Electronic Arts or The Sims 3 Development Team and may not work with new updates. Custom Content may cause the game to behave unexpectedly or not function entirely.

To disable your custom content, undo whatever you did to install this content to get your game back into an unmodified state. If you placed it in a Sims 3 directory folder, move it to a new folder that is outside your Sims 3 file directory. Your Sims 3 file directory can be found using the paths listed below:

Windows File Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3

Mac File Directory: User/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims/

Once you have installed the official update you may re-enable your custom content. If you experience problems, disable it again until the 3rd party developer updates their content to work with the official Update, Expansion Pack, or Stuff Pack.

Step 2: Back Up your Save Files

It’s always a good precaution to back up your save files before installing an Expansion Pack, Update, or Stuff Pack. To do this, copy the “.sims3” folders found in the Saves folder onto your desktop or another file directory.

Your Sims 3 Saves folder can be found using the paths listed below:

Windows File Directory: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Saves

Mac File Directory: User/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims/Saves

After the Update is installed, run the game to verify your saves still function correctly.

Step 3: Let the Update Complete Entirely

Updates can sometimes be rather large and may take a while to download and install completely. Cancelling the update before it has completed may cause unexpected problems, so it is always best to let it finish entirely. Do not close the Launcher until you have confirmed the update is completely installed, as this will cancel the update.

Is the doll and item from the store?

No, it's something that snuck into an Exchange item, like a house or something.

I know I said I would post this in the Ambitions section, but it is about the patch, so here I am. I loaded my previous game (the one with the Stylist) and found that she had a sketch on the drafting table barely started. I had her sit and finish it, then named it and used the 'Take It' option on the drafting table. Then I tried to move it into her portfolio. No luck. There's still the possibility that it had to be a sketch she started since the patch was installed, but I doubt it. I'm putting the issue aside for a while and will get back to it when I'm done with the Wishmaster's Challenge.

From some of the things I've seen talked about here, this patch has caused some people big problems. If it's truly messed up the game for enough people, they'll have to put out another patch. Is that good news?  :-\

I only have experience with Sims 3, but it seems to be a common practice for EA to release a patch that fixes things and breaks other things.  Then they later release another patch to fix those things, which in turn breaks other things, etc.  I don't think we've ever had this game perfectly fixed.  It's just the nature of the beast.

I think it's pretty much the same problem with all game design companies.  Programing is a very complex business, and it's sometimes hard to know which "fix" is going to effect which other part of the game.  I've seen it in every game I've played to date, and in games I've beta tested as well (back in the day I was a beta tester for Itari).

I don't mind bugs, what I do mind is lack of acknowledgment from the company.  There are other companies that are much better at saying, "Yes, we realize that ______ is a problem, we're working on it.  You can expect a fix in the next patch, which will occur in 30 days."  Sometimes, it's just comforting to know that our posts are being read by someone who can actually do something about it.  I would say that's probably my biggest complaint about EA, and really that's just a customer service issue which could easily be resolved if someone decided to make a few simple changes.  It's actually one of the main reasons why I hang out here and not the main forum, just visiting that place causes me oodles of frustration, not just with the people who go there, but with the basic lack of customer service.

Anyway, I really don't mean this as a "bash EA" comment, just a constructive criticism.  Not that they'll read it here anyway.  :D  To be fair, I did notice that there were a LOT more moderators over there today who were making sticky threads regarding the recent patch, so perhaps things have gotten better there since the last time I was a regular participant. :)  Let's hope that's true!

In any case, THANK GOODNESS FOR CARL & PAM!  Am I right? :-*

Unfortunately it looks like the relic digging issue hasn't been sorted out, which is very frustrating for my adventurer sim. Maybe it's more complicated to solve than they expected?

A workaround I figured out is to use buydebug to spread some excavation spawners around the unbuilt vacation home sites in each country: you CAN excavate on these sites.  I try to minimize the cheating aspect of it by limiting myself to 4 common, 2 uncommon and 1 rare spawner.

So I finished downloading the new patch, and I'm officially having problems... already. :(  Specifically one of my Wishmaster's is invisable.  And when I had him go and "plan outfit" I discovered why.  Here is what he now looks like, in all his glitchy glory.

I asked my b/f who knows more about this than I do, and he's seen the coding for this error. Basically it's a corrupted item of clothing that is messing things up.  Now he's written a mod to deal with said issue. Knowing that this place is mostly mod free, I asked if there is any way to fix it without using mods, and he said none that he could see/find.  Sorry.

Well, that's interesting malteser60.  Is there any way to figure out what clothing is causing the problem?  Because maybe I could just remove whatever it is.  Do you think something from The Store could be messing it up?  That seems really odd to me!

As I understand it, the clothing in question is mistakenly coded to be available for all sims: adults, children, babies, etc., which is exactly the problem.  A child is spawned, the game gives it the corrupted clothing, and it looks like a misshapen monster.  And if the game randomizes clothing for an adult sim (like pregnancy), and if the sim gets the child version of the adult clothing, the sim becomes invisible, but looks like a strange stretchy misshapen solid black baby when you go to Plan Clothing.  And all clothing will be available, male, female, adult, babies, all ages, but you can't change into it.

And, as I further understand it, the files in question have "nkd" somewhere in the file name.  And I've heard the clothing line "American Blonde" is also corrupted.

The nerds of the few outweigh the nerds of the many.

Wow, that's really interesting.  I don't have the American Blonde clothing line, so that's not it in my case.

I'm going to try uninstalling the 2 items I have from the exchange, one is a house so I doubt that's it.  The other is a Sim, so maybe that's the problem right there.

Well, I'm sad to see no mention of the excavation problem being fixed, but I am glad to see the Sim Gnubb game is supposedly fixed. I was just coming here to ask if anyone else had that problem, and I guess they have.

Patch Problems
« Reply #34 on: July 14, 2010, 11:50:05 AM »
Just upgraded to the latest version, and now for some reason, the consignment cash register doesn't work.  It will let me choose the "buy" action and my sim goes and interacts with the counter sim, but then the action stops without the shopping cart showing up.  All the other registers work fine.

Also, for the last two patches, it seems like half the excavation sites (and nearly all of them in China) are inaccessible.  They show up, but if I tell a sim to excavate them, the sim just makes the "can't get to that" motions.

Anybody else running into these problems?

I can get into the tombs but have had the I can't do that" problem and since the patch my trips will have momentary frozen screens. I don't have the problem when the Sim is at home, only traveling.

Excavation outside of lots is broken for everyone.  A workaround is to use buydebug to add spawners to those empty vacation lots in town, and excavate from them.

A lot of people, me included have had both these problems.  For more information, see the Can't Excavate thread in the Miscellaneous section.  The thread on the Consignment store in the Ambitions section has more information on that problem.

Patch issues
« Reply #39 on: July 16, 2010, 05:16:29 PM »
I hope there's no other thread for this...

I updated my Ambitions game with the last patch and now the game is really odd. I load the neighborhood but my sims aren't there... I already tried eliminating all CC in case it was an incompatibility issue, but I still have the same problem. I also tried the instructions here http://carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php?topic=6.0 but the same thing is still happening. No one else that I know of has had issues with the last patch (at least not so serious), so I'm guessing it might be just an installation problem...

So... I was wondering, is it possible to delete a patch somehow? I haven't played since I installed it so saved games wouldn't be a problem, but I have no idea if you can actually track the patch to the EA folder? If it were possible, would that cause any trouble to the game? It would be a pain having to reinstall the whole game  :P.

Ok, when you say that your sims "aren't there" what exactly do you mean?  Do you mean that your saved game files are missing and don't show up on the main menu?  Do you mean that when you load up a saved game that your sims don't appear on your control panel?  Are your sims invisible with plumbobs over their heads?

I'm merging this topic with the existing thread about the patch.  Also, it belongs on the Technical Help board.  :)

I am actually able to load the neighborhood but I can't play because my families and houses don't even exist. It's very odd because I had saved them several times before updating... I can see the saved game in the main menu, but when the neighborhood loads they just... disappeared. I guess I will have to uninstall, reinstall and try to copy & paste the saved game again without the patch? But I was really looking forward for this patch solving some of the ambitions issues :(.

EDIT
So... I gave up and uninstalled the whole Sims 3. I am now finishing reinstalling ambitions... and I hope it will be fixed. I hope I'll recover my saved games, but I doubt it :(.

EDIT 2
Great, now I can't even open the launcher to update it. I have had serious trouble after installing every expansion pack for the sims 3 and I am really getting sick of it.

I've also got an issue with the patch. Mine is that when I patch my game to 1.14 (I only own the Base Game), the game loads everything, and allows me to select a save-game or town. The bar for loading the town goes to about 98% and stops there. After uninstalling and reinstalling it 8 total times, I tried once without patching and my game worked fine. Any solutions?

Hi Zamxus and welcome to our Forum!

If you have a Window operating system, I recommend that you do a complete wipe and cleanup of the game and your computer.  There some extra steps involved that you may not have done.  They do make a difference in getting a clean install of your game.

Click here for instructions on how to get started.
