You shouldn't "lose" paintings at all. At least to my knowledge I've never had stuff evaporate into thin air. If you cancel the consignments, then they should pop back in your inventory after you move them over. That did not happen?

There were paintings that I had sent to the consignment shop. When I went back to add more I clicked on buy and he walked to the cash register they talked, then nothing, it just ended. It won't give me the option to cancel and there is nothing in my family or personal inventory. There were only two that hadn't sold yet but I'm more bummed that I can't use the consignment shop cause it seemed like I was getting a lot more for my paintings that way.

This has happened to me.  Sometimes exiting the game works.  Other times I've had to wait a few days and try again (usually when a different sim starts working at the consignment shop).

Haven't started this one yet (just about to move house!) but the consigment shop was so flakey in wishmasters that I'm hoping for a patch. I didn't even start using it until about half way through, it's not like they needed the money but I just wanted to give it a spin since making money for the inventing career was so tedious, it worked for a couple of days and then nothing - no matter what I put up for sale it wouldn't sell. Sometimes I couldn't even get the buy window up, I found that taking everything off, quitting the game and reloading sometimes would get me another day of sales but its so completely random. I have some theories about what breaks it but nothing concrete. Justy taking the stuff off and relisting it didnt work, I even bought the consigment shop and added another till and that didn't help. The worst part is statues, when you cancel the consignments everything goes in the personal inventory but you can't sell or place statues from there (or I couldn't find a way) so I couldn't even sell them the 'conventional' way.

Most of my free time is spent packing at the moment but when I get some time I'm going to run some tests. If I find anything I'll share.

More fun with the consignment store - I started a couple to test a few theories, decided I didn't like how I'd started out and exited to the main menu without saving and started again using the same couple from the family bin - and at 5pm I got money from the consignment store from things the previous incarnation had made!

That is so weird!!! Ok well after playing all day I decided to go back and see what was going on. It let me cancel my consignments that were in there and add more. The stuff I added never sold so I eventually went back and canceled those as well. I officially think the consignment store stinks! :P

I think I'm getting the hang of the consigment store. This is what is working for me:

Only list a few items per day (approx 6-10) and never more than 2-3 of any particular type of item, IME if you list too much at once nothing will sell.
Be sure to cancel any consignments before they reach 0 days, items that reach 0 are supposed to be returned to you (there's an entry for items returned unsold in the skill journal) but they don't, they just break everything. If a single items gets to 0 days, nothing will be sold. If it gets to -1 you wont be able to open the 'buy' dialogue. If an item gets to 0 or less days you need to cancel all your consigments, save and restart the game.

See, I'm thinking what happened to me is a glitch because I never had more than 5 items at a time and I wasn't going into the consignment shop every day. I really don't know. I think I'm going to put another family in the same neighborhood and see if it works or if it's done for good.

If we're talking about your challenge file, no you can't enter edit town and do that.

After you cancelled your consignments did you save and restart? You have to quit all the way out not just back to the main menu - it seems to retain variables across game sessions (as shown by my sim getting consignment sales from an unsaved game that used the same sim) so whatever flag is causing it not to work stays unless you quit out. When you were going to the consignment store every day were you cancelling any unsold consignments?

Oh no I mispoke ... I meant once the challenge is over, going in and doing that to see if it works or if it still messes up.

Yes I had gone completely put a couple times. This happened since Saturday (Saturday real people time not sims game :) ) and I've played everyday with restarting the computer and the game. I only went to the consignment store every other sim day or every two days. For about two sim weeks it wouldn't let me cancel or add items. I'd click on buy and they'd talk then just stop the action canceled itself. Who knows it's very strange. I hadn't played very long or hadn't gone very many times. Things still won't sell in the consignment store although I can add them and cancel them.

Tom da Vinci is done with two months (two of his skills). That's the thing with my free time — if nothing else is going on and the kids are wrapped up in activities/camps or visiting my mom, wow....I can just pile drive through multiple events. Another factor for me is whether or not I have Guide stuff on my plate and I don't right now. Once Late Night comes out it will be back to writing fast and furiously. Anyway, I may be done before I hit the sack tonight, so we'll see how high the bar is set.  I've posted results first in a few events, but that hasn't helped me win anything! :D

Heh yeah, maybe next year we should post scores privately. We could have a big reveal at the end, could be exciting not know where you are on the board :)

I actually have a question, I don't think its come up, I know selling klepo'ed stuff has been mentioned but what about just regular upgrading stuff eg. when you get the special fridge do you also have to keep the fridge you already had? On the one hand it would suck to never be able to sell anything you've bought on the other hand someone might sell all their furniture at the end of the challenge to boost their score.

Painting, Cooking, Inventing, and Sculpting. That's it. Can't sell stuff. Selling any kind of item does not fit into one of those categories. I agree that it kind of stinks. I've almost blown it myself a few times because it's just a habit of mine to unload stuff that's not necessary — especially all of the certificates. Not I think 4 or 5 certificates is going to make difference between first and second place, but you never know!  :D

EDIT: I meant to say selling any kind of item not connected to those skills, but you got the idea.  :D

Hi, been lurking for a while (stalking Carl's guides mostly, lol) and now a first time poster. This challenge caught my eye and would like to give it a try, if I'm not too late to join it please ? This would be my first challenge on TS3 series (I've just jumped on the TS3 bandwagon recently coming in from TS2).

I have a question though - are your sims absolutely required to live in a house or can they just live "al fresco" in a lot (ie. no rooms and roofing) ? Do I need to build them a house if I move them into an empty lot ?

By the way, I felt compelled to actually sign up and participate in the forum because I found the forum very friendly, helpful and inviting in general, you folks are great ;D

Solstice, thanks for the nice words and welcome to the forum. This really is a fantastic group of folks. You're going to love it here.

To your question — no, if you want to go "bear in the woods" as I call it, feel free. Building a house in almost any challenge is always optional. Whatever style floats your boat (oh, I just sounded like my mom...who uses that expression?  ;D)

I would like to sign up for this challenge too, I have tried some of the challenges on this forum before, but I always seem to get distracted before getting to the end of them. Maybe by signing up I will actually finish one.

Great minds think alike, or as my mum used to say, fools rarely differ  - Not that I'm calling you a fool, please don't get me wrong lol
Anyway, I was thinking a few days ago how not knowing any scores until they are all released together would add a touch of anticipation to the game, wondering how we stand. I also feel that some people might drop out if they know they can't get near the top scores, but if it was a surprise right at the end, more people might continue because of the chance that they are in the top lot.

Our hosts, Tom and Kathy da Vinci, sit at Week 12, Day 1. So, just one more week of grinding and they'll be done.

Can't wait to see your score, I've just started my first test and I've no idea where I'm going to end up by the end of it. I think I'm getting the hang of the consignment store though
