Writing: Best Topic to Write
« on: August 14, 2010, 03:18:01 PM »
My sim is an author and i was wondering which genre is the best to write(for money). Now I know romance novels give the most royalties but they do take longer to write. My question is, say if my sim was going to write, non-stop, for a week what topic would make the most money factoring in royalty/time factor.

I would do childrens books.  You can pump them out so fast and you'll easily complete the skill challange.  Plus your writing speeds up with every book read (up to 50) which is easy for how short the kid books are.

If you are looking for money vs. time factor, I would say go with drama.  It's a mid range book as far as length with decent royalties and you don't need to have any other traits or skills to write them.  Children's books require level 3 painting skill.  You also unlock them at level 3, which you should reach by the time you've written a fiction or sci-fi novel.  But that's just my opinion.

Haven't had a novelist sim for a while; but recently noticed that childrens books are a few pages longer than fiction or non-fiction novels.  So those 2 should be writen faster.

Do children's books just get higher royalties? Or what makes them better for money?

Children's books are slightly longer than fiction and non-fiction. But, those genres are the absolute bottom of the barrel as far as expected royalties. Children's books have significantly better payout.

Ha ha. Yeah, a great transition for a cook who knows all recipes is to go into Children's Book writing. The cook has already read many books since recipes count as a full book so they'll have that writing speed boost at the get-go.

Lol, that would be a bad mix in RL, decent cook and couch potato.  Oh wait, that kinda is me :O  minus the making money from writing part.

My current writer wrote children's books until she got her LTW of being a Professional Author.  Now I'm switching her over to humor books, then to satire when it opens up.  I don't have any actual data to share, but I've had success in the past with humor and satire novels.

I would have to agree with Pam on the Satire option. I started out using that, and if you have the over emotional and grumpy trait, (both connected to Satire) as well as perfectionist, I was able to make books between 2800-3900 a piece after writing only 20 books.

Isnt it best to do masterpieces because in the guide it says that they have the best page to royalty ratio.

Perhaps they do, but it takes a good deal of work to be able to write a masterpiece.  In the meantime, your Sim has to write something, right?  I've had decent luck with Satire, but the ones who did the best on this year's writing challenge used Children's books and ran away with by far the best scores.

In my experience, a Masterpiece took almost a week to write...well it seemed like a week.  Was probably closer to 4-5 days.  Now that might be okay if you are having a second Sim as an author writing other books to keep the income stream.  But a solo Sim, yes, Children's books are the way to go.  Just wish I had known that during the Writing challenge.

My sim's 7th masterpiece had a week pay of $25,000, but she specialized in masterpieces and was both a bookworm and perfectionist.

That would be near 2 k a day? I would still rather go for a career

Not a week, a day. And that's consistent for 6 weeks plus whatever other books you write.

You can bring in a ton of cash if you have multpile kids all writing books while aging up.  Durring one Legacy challenge, had 4 kids all writing books.  Together, after getting to YA, they were earning about 35k a week.

I almost always play a writer Sim. What I do is write 4 of every available book and leave the specialist slot open for the masterpieces.

Actually, if you write 5 of each book your sim will still specialize in masterpieces as soon as the 5th book is complete; besides, the math gets a little easier.
