New feature discovered from display case
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:08:30 AM »
Hi all...have any heard about the new display case and it's great new feature?  I found this out while lurking on sims 3 forum.  You use the biggest display, the XL whatever, I forget the name, and put your cheap gems, broken vases, broken bowls, cheap ingots, whatever and click, the option to "activate" comes up.  It costs you $500 to use and then it starts jumping with lightening shooting out and then, voila...you get different things like a skull made out of your gems, mysterious Mr. Gnomes, money bags...it's fantastic!  You can't use space rocks or uncut gems or unsmelted metals.

Thought I'd pass on this tidbit of info.  So far, I've gotten a soulpeace metal worth $4,875, a mysterious mr. gnome and a money bag worth $675 from basically junk I previously have been just selling to clear out my inventory. ;D

What can you make?  ;D

Sort by function/Surfaces
I assume it's the Carter's Display Case - XL Edition. It's the most expensive one.

This is awesome bshag!

All those cheap gems and broken bowls are so boring, this should be fun. ;D

Yup, that's the one...Carter's.

I just made a conpendium ingot which is a combination of 3 palladium ingots, 5 silver ingots and 2 gold ones.  This new ingot is worth $3,795 which is way more than the 10 ingots I put in.

Yup, this is definitely gonna be a money maker.  ;D

Interesting!
Do you think there are different combinations, or is it just random?

Hey bsahg, must have read the same thread over at EA forum  :D .... Haven't had a chance to try this out, I want one of those skull cut gems!  :D  The Sim I use for traveling has a ton of collectibles in his inventory and I can't wait to see what he comes up with!  :D

I have 3 different Skull cut gems at the moment with my current family.  They are very cool and can be different depending on the main gem in the mix.  I have an emerald one that is gorgeous.

Hey igzigpuff, wild, I want a skull cut also but before I found this interesting feature I had got rid of all my cheapy gems.  Now I won't be quite so disappointed after running miles only to find out the gem was a blue topaz.  :D

I think the mix is random but I like using it just to see what will pop out.  ;D

Leave it EA to come up with something totally surprising.  :D

Try breaking space rock blocks with a high level martial artist... great way to get multiple colors and types, and turns all the low value gems you get from that into a potentially better income stream.

You don't always get something awesome from the display case.  After loading it with 8 gems and spending $500 on the transfigurization, I ended up with a large emerald cut Smoky Quartz worth less than $50.  Lame!

Is this before or after having the space rock blocks analized?

Actually, you're not collecting space rocks for this and, therefore, there is no analyzing.  When you develop the Martial Arts skill, one of the things you do is practice breaking boards.  You get to choose what kind of board, depending on the level your Sim is on.  The Space Rock Board is the hardest and most difficult.  But all you do is click on the board breaking equipment and choose "Space Rock Board" and you're good to go.  Uncut gems will appear on the ground around your Sim as he/she breaks the Space Rock Boards.

Thanks for explaining that.  I had a serious blonde moment and forgot all about the space rock boards to break.   ;D

I hear ya Pam...I put 8 gems as well, including a nice tanzinite and I got a huge emerald cut topaz worth $47.  ::)  Good grief!

I can't for the life of me, get a skull cut.  I found on sims 3 forum if you put 5 different cuts of gems plus 5 other items it will give you a skull cut.  I did and ended up with a pile of ancient coins.  :P

I guess it is all random and you take your chances...but I really want that skull.  >:( :D

I don't think that's right, I think it needs to be all gems. If you mix different kinds of things I usually get ancient coins or money bags.
I've made something like 5 skulls in a row, I just took random gems of different kinds and cuts. If they're the same you just get that one large one worth nothing. :P

I have never gotten a gnome though, how do I make that one?

Well, the Prima Guide got one right then. It says that using multiple cuts w/ different colors works. Thanks PJ

I got a gnome when I put a bunch of different vases and bowls (the non-collection kind) on the display, with no gems, and activated it.  It seemed kind of a waste of a bunch of bowls though.  They might even have all been ancient.  What does the gnome do?

It depends on what kind of gnome it is.  If it's one of the Mysterious gnomes, it's worth $1,000 and it disappears/reappears randomly.  Plus, there's a different looking gnome for all three locations in World Adventures, so it might be fun to collect all of them.

I'm the one who started the thread on TS3 forum and you've got the "formula" for a skull a little mixed up.  To make a skull you need 5 different cuts of gems (any 5 cuts...doesn't matter) and then the other 3 can be whatever.  If you want a skull of a certain gem, you need to have more of that gem than the others.

For example...if you want a Tiberum skull, you need to use a heart shape & a spiral cut Tiberium, 3 other cuts of random gems (that's your 5 different gem cuts) and then the other 3 gems can be whichever cut of Tiberium you have...which makes a total of 5 Tiberium gems and 3 random gems.  You will more likely than not, get a Tiberium skull.

Here is the link to the thread on the TS3 Forum for additional  info and combos for metals and random items. http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/132219.page

Hi Pam,

What you get out of it depends on what you put into it.  If you put in mostly smokey quartz, that's what you're going to get out of it.  To get skulls, you need to have 5 different cuts of gems and what KIND of skull you get depends on what gem you have the most of on the display when you activate.

If you want Magic Gnomes, you put random items.  For example, if you mix a bunch of different things, the majority of the time you get Gnomes.  If you want gems, put all gems, if you want metals put all metals.  If you mix gems and metals you will more likely than not get gnomes.  If you put all fossilized fruit, most of the time you will get a random seed.  You never know what it will be til you plan and grow it though ;)

There are a lot of things you can do with it.  You should check out the thread on the TS3 forum for more ideas.  Eccles has been experimenting and has become the expert :)

@ Akila906 thanks for posting the link to the thread over on the EA forum, I saw that awhile back but didn't bookmark it and couldn't find it again.  I have a Sim with a bunch of uncut gems and had him send them off so I could start trying for the skull, but when he got his gems back all I got were the magical gnomes!  When you want a gnome you can't get one!  :o :-\  He's still got plenty of raw gems to send, so I'm still trying!  :D

Here's a pic of the 5 Magical Gnomes he got instead of gems, I think my Sim will have an army of gnomes soon!  :o

Did you know that if you send off gems from vacation and they come back as magical gnomes, they will be the local ones for that country.  I've gotten two Chinese gnomes that way.

That's good to know Pam, I hoped that would be the case.  Too bad I don't really want anymore gnomes right now,  this Sim already has like 9 or 10 Magical Gnomes 2 from China and not including the 5 he just received in the mail.  I need my gems right now for that darn skull gem!  ;)
