2011 World Ranking
« on: November 29, 2010, 03:51:08 PM »
2011 World Ranking

The World Ranking has two basic components: a Wins component (65%) and a Participation component (35%). I wanted to design a very simple ranking system that was still an effective measure of player caliber. To receive a World Ranking a player must finish at least 3 Tournament challenges. So, let me walk everyone through how one's World Ranking is determined.

Each of the 2011 Tournament challenges has a column in my Tournament spreadsheet. Individual cells in the challenge columns are filled with a ratio of how many players a player beat in that challenge in relation to how many could have been beaten. Let’s take a look at Joe Blow and how Joe did in the first 3 events of the season. Let’s say the field size of event #1 is 25 and Joe finished 8th. That means he beat 17 out of a possible 24 players (I don’t count Joe), so Joe’s event #1 cell is =17/24. The 2nd event was larger, 30 players, and Joe did even better and finished 6th. Event #2’s cell is =24/29. Event #3’s participation dropped to 25, but Joe pulled out all the stops and won it. Event #3’s cell is =24/24.

Down the spreadsheet after all of the individual challenge columns is the “Sum of Wins” column. This is just the total of all of one’s ratios in each challenge column. So, with the first 3 events in the bag, Joe’s “Sum of Wins” column is 2.537.

Next comes the “# of Events” column which is a simple count function for all challenge columns. Joe has only participated in 3 2011 Tournament Challenges so far, so his “# of Events” figure is 3. The “Sum of Wins” is then divided by the “# of Events” for an “Ave of Wins” column:

2.537 / 3 = .845.

Now it’s time to add the weight for the Wins component. The Wins weight for everyone is 65% of final score, so we take .845 X .65 and get .549. That’s Joe’s final Wins component.

The second component is the lesser weighted component (35%) — Participation (I'm actually boosting it 5% compared to its weight in 2010). Everyone who submits a score in a challenge receives a 10% participation bonus figured into their ranking. So, there’s a 10-event cap at which point a player receives 100% of the Participation component. If someone participates in more than 10 Tournament challenges, then a player’s best finishes will be used to compute the World Ranking.

Okay, so Joe Blow has participated in the first 3 events. His participation bonus is .30 (10% per event). Participation counts for 35% of final score, so we then take .30 X .35 to get Joe’s final Participation component of .105.

Joe’s World Ranking is his final Wins component + his final Participation component:

.549 + .105 = .654.

For a trip down memory lane, check out the Final 2010 World Ranking.

Congratulations to everyone who has completed 3 challenges already!  Special congratulations to those near the top of the list, and to you a word of caution:  don't get too comfortable there!   ;)

With Rock Star closing I updated the world ranking. The big news is Lena takes top honors away from ClayMask. For now. Lol. We'll see what happens after Random closes — ClayMask's score in that is insane. Lots of other players moved up with their performance in Rock Star, so great job to all of you! :)

The World Ranking has been update with the results of the Random event results. Despite ClayMask's victory, LenaLJ still clings to first with a mighty grip. Only 3 events left. Who's going to be the champion this year?

The world ranking has been updated to reflect everyone's performance in Hobos to Heroes. There was significant movement in the ranking for a few key players, most notably Agneza. Agneza not only won Hobos to Heroes, but it was also her 11th performance of the season. World ranking is based on one's top 10 finishes, so I was also able to drop her worst performance. That was also the case for LenaLJ, so she leaped even farther ahead. Hobos to Heroes was ClayMask's 10th finish, so the gap will close again between the two top ladies when I'm able to drop ClayMask's worst performance next month at the close of Max Skillz.

The world ranking has been updated to show where everyone stands with the Max Skillz results. One thing is certain — either LenaJ or ClayMask will end up being the champion of this season. So both of these ladies deserve a big round of applause right now for their consistent incredible performance. And as always, great job to everyone in the last event.

As much as I had wished the 4 X 4 Finale would have had dozens of players and forced me to take a long time recomputing everyone's world ranking, that was not the case. Only 13 players ended up submitting scores for the Finale, but 1 was noticeably absent — LenaLJ. I was quite surprised. I knew that it was going to come down to either Lena or ClayMask winning it all depending on their finish in the Finale. I think ClayMask did a smart thing by choosing to participate because that allowed her to drop her lowest previous score. If Lena had participated, and say, finished 3rd or 4th, she still could have dropped her lowest performance since her count would have been 11. Would that have kept her #1 spot? Hard to say. It's one of those "what if" kind of situations.

But, what a year it has been! Fantastic participation. WAAAAY more players than last year. I am totally stoked over that. And you guys made it all possible. Thanks a million.

Congratulations to ClayMask for coming out on top after a long, tough battle with LenaLJ. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this years 2011 Sims 3 Challenge Tournament and earned a World Ranking! :)

Because of things in real life i havent had the time to play but have followed very closely how claymask would do in the last challenge, this is like a remake from last year where NancyJ took the first place in the last challenge from me.
I had seen it comming but didnt hope for it. Congrats Claymask was really fun battling against your scores, im happy about my second place with all these great players this year.
And i think i have calculated on it myself metro, if Claymask would get a higher score than me in the last challenge she would win, and as i didnt put in my scores in time i know it would happen.
But thanks for a great year of challenges hope to have a great time with you all again next year.

I was fairly surprised when I found out I had won this morning.  I had been thinking that the participation in this event was low enough that not winning it would cause me to not be able to drop a lower score.  Guess I was wrong, though.

Great job everyone on the tournament this year, but especially LenaLJ.  And good luck to you next year.  I had lots of fun with the tournament this year and learned very much, but had a hard time coming up with the time to do all the challenges (didn't even do one of them at all, and getting the rest finished was tricky).  Since it looks like a similar time commitment next year I don't plan on participating.  I might not have gotten the next expansion if I hadn't won it, so it really feels like a gift.  I will have fun with it when it comes out.

Thanks again Metro for coming up with these challenges.

You're right. I did a "what if" scenario. If you would have come in 3rd or last it would not have mattered — the Finale would have been the event I dropped for you to compute your world ranking, so your world ranking in fact would not have changed.

Congrats Claymask and terrific job LenaJ for coming in second.  Also congrats to everyone for participating.

I totally forgot about turning in my score yesterday or I might have given all of you a run for the top - hehe!  I guess that is what I get for waiting for the last minute then forgetting.

Thanks Metro for the terrific challenges.  This was my first year to participate and I really enjoyed the change to my daily game play.   I am also proud of myself for making it in the top 20 - barely :).

I am really looking forward to next year.

Congrats to ClayMask for winning, Well Done.

Also congrats to everyone who participated. I was going to join in the last event, but real life happens and I was doing other things and before I knew it, the last day was upon me.

Congrats ClayMask! You did amazingly!
Sometimes it feels like I've been here for a few minutes. I check a few threads, write a few posts, and three hours pass. When the fourth rolls by, I'm rubbing my eyes, threatening myself to get to bed. When the fifth hour gets here, I almost pull the plug from my computer. When the sixth hour rolls around, it's around 9PM. My feet are numb. At the seventh, I've been sitting at a thread for ten minutes, contemplating when to press refresh. At the eighth, I think about how wonderful it is to have such wonderful moderators. At the ninth, I remember it's a school night.

Congratulations ClayMask!
I'm happy on one tiny point - even if it was down the bottom, I'm so happy I managed to get myself onto the Ranking. I look forward to next year, and I hope that I'll manage a trip to the top.

EDIT: I must've left my manners at school! Thank you Metro, for coming up with a wonderful tourney! I have a fair few events that I hope make their way into the 2012 tourney, though. ;)

Even though I didn't participate at all this season, it was fun watching Lena and Claymask battle to the end. I'm hoping I'll find some challenge next year that interest me.

Congratulations Claymask on a deserved victory. Well done to everyone who participated in such an amazing year of challenges.
I am pleased with myself for finishing at number 23 and my aim for 2012 is to compete in more of the challenges I think I missed the last three or four. Of course it would be nice to actually win one of these things but that is not likely given the standard of some of our players.

Wow.  I actually made it on the list?  Color me surprised!  Gonna give it a shot next year as well.  My goal?  Make it on the list.  I know there is no way I can compete with players like LenaLJ or Claymask!  Congratulations to you both and to all who participated, and a big thanks to Metro for doing this for us all.
