My Most Embarassing Addiction. ;)
« Reply #875 on: August 16, 2010, 09:30:42 PM »
Well...where to begin?  When I first heard of The Sims, about 10 years ago, it really didn't sound like a game that would appeal to me.  And this is coming from someone who plays a LOT of PC games.  I knew a few people who were playing it, and apparently the game was very addictive... but seriously?  A game that just lets you lead a bunch of ordinary people through their ordinary lives?  Come on. ;)

Being an amateur game developer, I recently read a book on game design theory, which included an analysis of The Sims, as well as an interview with designer Wil Wright.  I had been trying to ignore The Sims for nearly a decade, but after reading Wright's insights into how and why the game was designed, I was definitely intrigued.  Of course, I knew The Sims was already in its third incarnation, and the franchise was practically a household name.

I started with The Sims 2 and played it tentatively.  I found it a bit depressing at first:  I made the mistake of creating a Sim just like myself - a self-employed man in his 30s, living alone.  It didn't seem too interesting.  Then I restarted the game and included my girlfriend, and I was much happier. ;)  I wanted to see what my life would be like if my girlfriend and I got married, so I used The Sims 2 to simulate that.  I didn't get any of the expansion packs, and after our first child was born, I eventually lost interest.

Reviews of The Sims 3 piqued my interest though, and eventually I picked it up too.  The changes were a bit jarring at first, but I quickly began playing it almost non-stop.  When my first Sim died and I found myself in tears, I seriously began to wonder if I had a problem!

Eventually,  I grabbed Ambitions and World Adventures.   I think it was Ambitions that got me truly hooked on The Sims 3.  I loved the idea of having a free-form job that eliminated the monotony of the usual careers.

I've played out many different scenarios:  single characters, a single father and his teenage daughter, a reclusive artist, a hippy gardener
and her surgeon girlfriend, a pair of green-skinned "aliens"... the possibilities seem endless.  I hope to do some blogging about the more interesting Sims in the future.

These days, I consider The Sims 3 to be my most embarassing addiction.  I'm totally in love with the game, but I rarely speak of it with my friends.  And most people I hear discussing it on the internet forums seem to be teenagers.  At age 36, I feel a little out of place. ;)

I found this website because most of my Google searches for Sims 3 help lead me here. ;)

I hope to be an active poster here in the future!  Thanks for reading my story. :)

Don't feel out of place, a lot of sims players are older.

Glic2000, don't feel out of place.  I am 54 and have played the Sims for the past 10+ years.  My grown children and my grandchildren think I am crazy but if only they really know the enjoyment I get out of the game.  Now I receive Sims point cards for my birthday etc. from them.
I have also shared my love of the game with a few of my older grandchildren.  Thought I would give them a taste of something other than the standard video games out there.
This is really a game for all ages and this forum has several 'elders' on it that will attest to that.  Welcome to the forum!  :)

One thing I do find especially appealing about The Sims:  it feels like a much more positive experience than most games I've played.

Most video games revolve around one side of a common dichotomy:  creating vs. destroying.  Most games I've played involved shooting/destroying/defeating, etc.  So they all involve the "destroying" side.  Games that appeal to the "creating" side are a bit more rare.  The Sims is definitely one of these games, and I like that.

Guess I should really introduce myself as I am finding out I am coming/referring to this site more and more.

I am a 54 year old grandma that has been playing the Sims since it first was introduced.  I also played Sim City and its various newer additions.  I am not one for joining forums and such as I pretty much keep to myself.

I live between Scottsdale, Arizona, USA and Ignacio, Colorado, USA - guess some would call me a 'snowbird' as I leave the cold behind in the winter and live where it is warm instead.  Then as soon as it heats up I generally move back to the cooler climate.  I have children/grandchildren in both states so that way I can also be near them all.  This year I am braving the heat because my youngest son is expecting his first child and I want to be here when the baby is born.

I buy all of the SP's and EP's usually before they come out - love pre-orders just hate waiting for them to finally be released.  I also enjoy reading books.

Welcome Glic and mtglady!

We do have some young members (as young as pre-teen), but we also have a great deal of older players.  I'm 50 myself, so I'm on the "older" side of the fence!  :D

Hi my name is Erin, I'm 21 and from Australia. Just thought I would introduce myself. I've been following the forums now for awhile and I love just how much information I can get from it about all my Sims 3 questions, so I thought I would register and hopefully also be able to contribute to some forum discussions.
I look forward to meeting you all.  :)

Welcome mtglady and Glic! At 55 I'm just getting started with the Sims, and loving it.

Is it "mountain glade-y" or "mountain G lady" or "meeting lady"? The voices inside my head want to get it right. ;)

Per her post in the thread about where everyone's names come from, it's Mortgage Lady.

Thanks for the welcome and the congratulations :)
This grandson will be our 16th grandchild.  I currently have 9 grandchildren of my own, this one makes 10.  Then I have 6 step-grandchildren and one step-great granddaughter.  Holidays are fun!
I was in the mortgage business when I first started playing so Mtglady seemed an appropriate user name at the time.  ;D

I think there is a big age span in people who play the sims. I'm 13 and I only have 1 friend that plays the sims seriously. I got all my sims 1 games from a uni student. Lol. :)

Yes Ruby, that is what makes this forum so interesting.  The ages are widespread, to say the least.  I am one of the older ones here, but don't tell anyone though, but I have enjoyed sims since day 1.  My mom, sister and I have every EP and SP from all three, heck, I could have bought a car with the money from that, lol.  At least we all have one thing in common, we all love the sims, so age is not even a factor here, just fun.

I'm Jake. I think too much. I come off harsher than I am, because that's how my writing style is - which I should probably change if I'm going to be an english major. ):
Anyways, sims 3 = my life. 'Nuff said.

Hi jake!!! Welcome to the forums.

Writing style on forums and texts can be very different than creative expression, so no worries.  Hope you get the professional track you want to pursue out of your major :) and have fun here.

Welcome Jake!

Obviously you're a braver man than I (except of course that I'm a woman), because part of me really wanted to write for a living, but writing can be so hard.  So good luck with that!

Hi!

Hi!
I'm Maria (or the, much preferred, Miranda).
I'm 25 (Gah!) and from a small town in south-east Sweden.
I live alone and play Sims 3 regularly (yep, quite the loser).
I love the english language, milk, parodies, Jane Austen and am obsessed with lucid dreaming.
I hate spiders, too hot summers, elevators and socks with holes in them.

I used to be very into Sims 2 - not really for playing, but for entering and holding beauty contests and such. You can see some of my pictures on my Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23881688@N04/
But when my favourite forum, Simfinity, died I lost my interest and started to play Sims 3 and am now more into playing than making pictures.

Why am I here? I have no idea; I just found this forum in the beginning of the summer and thought it looked interesting. I haven't poked around much yet, but probably and hopefully will!

Oh, and thanks for the Guide; it's invaluable!

Hello all!

My name is Flore.  I live in Vancouver, B.C.  I am a lady "of a certain age" (ok, I'm over the hill!)

I recently found Carl's site and this Forum.  I have been busy reading through the wealth of information found here.  I am a new Sims player - Sims 3 is my "first contact" with the game.  I just love playing g*d with my creations!
