Best jobs for parents
« on: January 19, 2011, 05:54:27 AM »
I was wondering what jobs any of you found easier to deal when there were also kids involved when they were babies and toddlers.  I found PI profession good because they could choose job and were always there.

Pretty much anything that would allow you to earn money right out of the home — inventing, painting, sculpting, writing, gardening — would qualify as a great way to make money for the primary caregiver.

Well, sculpting is great.
It's easy to stop and start, if a kid is crying, and you get large profits.
This is just my personal experience in my Tunic Legacy, but I'm sure, like Metro said, that any self employed profession would be good :)

I can't think of any rabbit-hole profession that works well for parents.  But the medical career has to be the ultimate worst for it, and you can get called in to work pretty much at any time...and usually when you're in the middle of doing something important.

Being self-employed is about the best option, because you rarely have to leave the home.  The only down side is that if the mother is the one who is self-employed, she doesn't get maternity leave, so she doesn't get paid unless she actually works.

Being Self Employed means being able to work when you want, so if your Sim can make a lot of money when they are pregnant by being Self Employed rather than getting the small amount from a Rabbit Hole career then it is much more worth it.

My stay at home sims are pretty much always writers!  It gives them something to do and bring in some cash, but unless they "Hate the Outdoors" I find they get stir crazy after a few days.

I agree with the others. Self-employment works great! I have had parents where one is a writer and the other is a rabbit-hole profession, and thinks work out well. I also have a butler and/or maid, which leaves the cleaning taken care of. it works out really well.

Also, if one parent maxes out the gardening skill, then you can really make money!

I choose a career that's not mentioned as a career: gem cutting. ;) You need ambitions for this and fulfilled both the Timber Terminator challenge in the Martial Art skill and the Body Builder challenge in the Athletic skill. Than cut out spacerocks and mostly a gem stone will popup from out of it.
Cut the expensive ones (pink diamond, opal, soulpeace) to heart forms and sell those. It won't cost you a penny and you are 'working' from out of your house and when the kids needs you, your sim could easily take a break.
Besides that all, it is one of the few 'jobs' that won't make your sim stressed out because for some reason they like cutting spacerocks day and night.
Attention fellow members! The forum rules essay is starting soon. You better refresh your mind. ;)

If you can get to the very top of the military career, being an astronaut, before you have kids, that would be easy for a parent because they only work one day a week.

Professions in Ambitions are great for parents. The stylist profession is normal hours. The ghosthunter profession is at odd hours, so you could relax and take care of the kids during the day. The architect profession is also good, you work at your own hours pretty much. Also getting self employed works well also. You can practice your skill and also take care of the kids.
For rabbithole careers, you could do part time jobs, or sometimes just painting and selling the paintings can work as a job ;)

The best career for a parent in my experience is the painting career. Gardening takes too much time, sometimes all you ever do the whole day is to tend the garden to get good crops, vegetables, and fruits. Writing takes longer to complete a book, and it doesn't make much, except every once in awhile the writer gets royalties. Once the Sim is skilled up in painting, she or he can sell the paintings as soon as she finishes them or sell them at the consignment store to earn more. Almost all my stay-home Sim moms are painters. Writing is a good side-job to a journalism career for a father. I haven't tried with the sculpting career though. Now I'm trying out the photographer career, but I'm observing it takes a lot of time searching for the right photos to complete a collection. Good luck!

Well as long as you have two parents, have one work from home and the other have a rabbit hole job.  Or in theory, both can have rabbit hole jobs as long as work schedules don't overlap, so someone is always home with the kid.  You just have to try to work around them working and sleeping....and it makes it hard to find time for them to try for another baby later.

The architect profession is great because they have normal work hours but don't have to be working all that time and when they are at the top they can work whenever they want.

I always have my mums be self-employed or completely unemployed whilst dads have to suffer the hard work pile at the office. :P

Did you try the daycare profession? That would be great for Parents and kids. That means the kids can socialize with their peers.

That's a bit sexist, isn't it? My dad stays at home all day while my stepmother goes out to work.
But then again, my dads been off for months with a stupid, broken, infected ankle.
Frankly, our ancestors don't seem like anything to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn't care what would happen to the people that came after them.

I agree with Athena that the best is painting. I had the mother as a painter and the father as a sculpture. They can take turns with the kids when they have them. Their plan is to buy the Art Museum for their own art work.

I usually do it the other way 'round - dad is self-employed, mum works in a rabbit-hole job.  That way the mum will get that lovely maternity leave with full pay for a few days.  Although I've read that since Generations both parents get parental leave, so maybe that strategy isn't necessary any more.
