The Centurian's Solo Challenge
« on: September 22, 2009, 06:55:52 PM »
The Centurian's Solo Challenge

The goal of the Centurian Challenge is simple: acquire as much Net Worth (Furnished Lot Value + Household Funds) and Lifetime Happiness Points (spent and unspent) as possible in 100 days.

RULES

1. Create a new young adult sim with the lifespan option set to "Long." This is a solo challenge, so no marriages. You're only playing this one sim.

2. Build a house or move into an existing home — doesn't matter. Change homes as often as you want.

3. No cheats or modifications.

4. No traveling allowed.

5. The challenge ends at the end of your sim's 100th day (15 weeks, 2 days).

SCORE

Your score is your total Net Worth (Furnished Lot Value in Buy Mode + Household Funds) + Total Lifetime Happiness Points (spent and unspent) at the end of your sim's 100th day.

Good luck, everyone!

Very nice challenge!  Is there a way to tell how many days the Sim has lived without having to keep count of the days?

Thanks, Pam. I hope you participate. I think I'll be doing a writer for the challenge since I've never done one. As to your question — well, it would just be the number of weeks and days played listed right under the Lifetime Wish.

I decided to not do a writer and created a guitarist for this challenge. Guitarists probably don't earn quite as much as painters and writers, but I did a guitarist before, had lots of fun with him and with the right traits he was always happy. So, maybe I can make up for the lack of simoleans with more Happiness Points.

Anyway, I'll post an update to the table at the 25 day mark.

Just a little update on my progress in this challenge. I flip-flopped a couple of times with different characters, and made a final decision on a painter. I named him after well-known fantasy painter Frank Frazetta. Frank just finished his 10th day and achieved the Brushmaster challenge. So, he'll be finished with small paintings and moving up to large ones for more money. He's at level 9 in his skill and about 1/3 of the way to mastery. He pretty much eats Autumn Salad every meal, but the last time he made it it was nice quality, so that's all that's important — just a little mood boost. I want to get him the Super Creative reward soon, so I really need to earn the next 12k Lifetime Happiness points fast.

I decided to go ahead and do this challenge!  My Sim is named Trinity.  Her traits are Bookworm, Ambitious, Charismatic, Natural Cook, and Computer Whiz.  Her Lifetime Wish is Culinary Librarian.  Cooking will be her hobby, but she wants to work in Journalism.  She'll also write books on the side for more money.  I usually play in Sunset Valley, but I'm playing Riverview.  It will be a change of pace for me.  She bought a small home that has a junked car on the lot next to her.  Let's hope she's successful enough to move to a nicer part of town.  :)

Oh, Pam...that's awesome! I'm so happy you're doing this challenge. I'll be really curious to see how my numbers stack up against yours. It's my first painter, so I'm sure I'm making a few mistakes.

You're doing better than me at the first, that's for sure.  I'm on the beginning of week 2, day 1 and Trinity's net worth is $13,248.  Her happiness points are 6,154.  She had a burgler, but the stolen items were returned, thank goodness!  She's gotten one promotion, which puts her at level 2 of the journalism career track.  I'm enjoying the challenge!

Speaking of Happiness Pts...you probably already know this, but I just discovered only yesterday that by hovering the cursor over the treasure box, one gets the total earned Happiness Pts — spent and unspent. That's good because that's the number you want in this challenge, so there's no adding involved (I hate math :))

Yeah, I'd already learned about the happiness points.  However, I didn't know that you could see the week and day by hovering over the time.

On week 3, day 1:  $16,746 in net worth and 11,430 happiness.  Total is 28,176 points.  She's getting a slow start, but I'm hoping she'll finish strong!  :D

Carl, that's great you're jumping in too! Good luck with your character. Frank is doing really, really well. My thanks for your excellent painting guide, Carl. That's a big reason why I chose this particular sim for this challenge. Frank is almost at the halfway mark (50 days) and I'll update the table at that point.

I corrected the ending date in the rules for a sim — it's not 14 weeks, 2 days. It would be 15 weeks, 2 days — a full 14 weeks would have past (98 days) and at the end you'd be in your 2nd day of the following week.

---------

EDIT: Here's my halfway update — Frank just finished his 50th day (Week 8, Day 1):

Player                      Net Worth      +        Lifetime Happiness Pts       =        Total
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metropolis Man          514078                    220084                                      734162

The amount of simoleans Frank is earning is truly staggering. It got me thinking about another challenge that might be fun once Carl and Pam (and anyone else) are done with this one — a dual painting couple in the same house with the goal of quickly hitting a million Household Net Worth. It probably wouldn't take too long. If I had a female clone of Frank right next to him painting this whole time, then I would have achieved the goal by now. What really kicked things over the top for Frank were 2 commissions he's received — one was to deliver 10 paintings to the Office Building. That netted around 120k. The other was just insane — 15 paintings to City Hall for an incredible 212k!

So, I guess the next 50 days for Frank will be business as usual — painting 3-4 large paintings a day, chatting occasionally with his few friends to keep the Social bar high, and making the sporadic trips to the spa to eliminate the Stir Crazy moodlet.

He's taken the Partner option at the 3 cheapest places to do so: the Bookstore, the Grocery Store, and the Diner. So, I'm not sure if I'll have him pursue the more expensive Partnering opportunities. There's just 7 weeks left of this challenge for Frank and I'm pretty sure you can only make like 1-2k profit from any place per week as a Partner.

Good luck Pam and Carl. You'll need to bring your A game to beat Frank. :)

My character, Trinity is plugging along.  She's getting nice promotions in her journalism career, but not doing so well with writing books.  She's only completed 2 at the moment and they don't bring much money in.  But she was at least able to move out of the bad side of town.  She's got a larger house with a garage that can be converted into more living space.  Current stats as of week 4, day 1:

Net worth:  20,124
Happiness points:  15,594
Total:  35,718

OK I'm jumping in too...
Mucha Dinera- Business career w/ writing job on the side

Hard working
Bookworm
Loner
Handy
Ambitious

So far I am kind of regreting loner- she kind of freaks at work...   maybe I will switch her to klepto...
I am living in the smallest weirdest looking house I could build since I read Carl's tip - "He won't spend money on items, because they depreciate in value. Cash on hand is more valuable in this way."
We are just working on CASH!

Speaking of money and the way things change value, Frank is kind of in a pickle. I added an enormous addition to his home to basically display all of the masterpieces that he creates. BUT...there's a huge problem with this — my bills every Monday and Thursday just skyrocketed. It's not that he couldn't afford them, but I just don't know what the better route is — immediately sell all paintings for cash or keep them to increase lot value.

Yeah, the bills increase in proportion to the value of the lot.  The more your paintings increase in value, the more your lot will increase, and the more your bills will cost.  Definitely a pickle.

Well, I discovered a way around my dilemma. If I throw the paintings that will appreciate the most in value — the Masterpieces — in Frank's Inventory — guess what? They add nothing to Lot Value. And I guess I could just sell them on his 100th day.

Excellent plan!  Are you sure they'll still appreciate while in his inventory?  I had a painting in my family inventory once and it didn't appreciate at all.

I think so, Pam. I haven't tried selling any of them yet, but if I hover over the paintings while in his Inventory there's the listed original value and the appreciation value. I guess once I sell I'll find out.

OK, so here is my update.

WK 8 Day 1  (little over half way, correct?)

$63,095  + 136,209 = $199,304
(Cash I forgot to check on value of home, but it can't be much.  I have spent too much money on books and need to start selling them off, especially the duplicates.)

At top of Business career & working on Masterpiece.  Top of writing skill and about 35 books written.  Trying to decide if I should switch careers.  I try to do lots of meetings because a meeting (2 sim hours) = $750.  Not too bad!

I am off to bed.  I will check back in tomorrow!

Frank Frazetta's Centurian Solo Challenge has come to an end. What an incredibly prolific 100 days he had as a painter. Frank completed his 281st painting with only 15 minutes left on his 100th day! 65 of Frank's paintings were Brilliant and 80 were Masterpieces. Money Earned from Paintings: 1,074,900. Worth of Most Valuable Painting Sold: 8567.

Player                      Net Worth      +        Lifetime Happiness Pts       =        Total
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Metropolis Man          1060088                   342661                                      1402749

Frank's score broke down as follows: 957953 in Household Funds and 102135 of Furnished Lot Value. And then the added Total Lifetime Happiness Pts Acquired.

I'm still shaking my head is disbelief at the amount of simoleans this guy cranked out from painting. I remember reading something about a fresco opportunity in one of Carl's writeups. Frank never received that opportunity, so it would be interesting to compare another painter and the total earnings if that opportunity was completed.

Oh, I almost forgot — last night with about 3 weeks left — Frank's life nearly came to an early end. He was upgrading his stereo system for better speakers and got electrocuted and singed in the process. He also set his painting room on fire. It was quite ugly. The strange thing is he had a Handiness skill level of 7 during the upgrade. Guess he just got unlucky.

Can't really think of any other highlights or lowlights worth mentioning from this painting machine's quick life. Hmmmmm....I wonder how many Autumn Salads Frank consumed? :)  :)

Nice job, Honeymooners! Since you and I are both finished I'll update the table at the beginning of this thread.

And you're right about solo sims — they are easy. But, since this was my first shot at creating a challenge I wanted to keep it simple. Stay tuned. I'm going to expand on this money making concept to a married couple. I'm just waiting for Pam and Carl to finish and I'll throw up the rules after that.
