Is there a limit of posts a member can make here?
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:55:23 PM »
I was today searching through the member catalog here when I mentioned a bar on the very end after each name that tracked the amount of posts a member has posted in a bar filled with blue. The farther the blue to the end, the more it hits the end. As you can see on page 18 (http://www.carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php?action=mlist;sort=realName;start=1530) you will notice that a 'random member' named Pam (it's just an example dear Pam ;)) has posted 6894 and that number has probably increased the moment you are watching. The blue has reached almost the very end of the bar. My question is as followes: what happens if that blue actually do hit the end of the bar?

I don't take answers like 'wait and see' or 'it means the end of the world.' Please be specific.

Nothing. Pam's bar already is maxed. Look carefully at the gap on the left and right side and you'll see the identical amount of white space.

Hmm, altough I believe you, I really want to believe you, I still don't see the identical amount of white space. ;)

I believe that the bar may be in proportion to all the other members in the forum, so Pam's is maxed because she has the highest number and all the other bars are in proportion to hers. So as long as no one overtakes her in the number of posts it will always look the same. http://www.carls-sims-3-forum.com/index.php?action=mlist;sort=posts;start=0 This may give a clearer picture.

Metro and RJ are right.  My bar is maxed and it's in proportion to other posters.  I set the standard, so to speak.  Leto, if you don't see a full blue bar, it might be a graphics issue or something.  :)

Wow, I just imagined Pam's post count at the end of this year... Like 30,000 posts, I think. The best thing is that everyone knows that these posts were either important info or gameplay help. Keep up the good work, Pam.

Wow I am third!  ;D If you look at mine which is almost half the amount of posts that Pams then the Blue Bar does looka bout half the size.  :)

Wanna race paws? ;) First who wins the 3000 earns a date. If I win, you have to go to Holland, and if you win... well, we will see about that. :P

Wait, if I win that means you have to come to Florida, only fair, haha. ;D

That is pretty cool to have something like that to keep track of how many posts people make.  Pam will really be hard to even get close to, let alone pass up. :)

I think the coolest thing is that the post count seems to follow the rank-size distribution: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rank_size_rule, or for a better explanation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zipf's_law).  If we follow that model, it means that no matter how much you race, Pam will always be a certain fraction ahead of everyone :D

I didn't say that... :P

Hehe Lulu, that is complicated stuff you've just posted. :P

Who will be faster, the turtle or the hare?
Indeed, the turtle.

Haha, I'm just trying to show off what I learned in statistics last semester, although I mostly just know how to recognize the picture.  But I also was amazed to see a pattern my teacher says shows up everywhere actually show somewhere!

I'm at number 29, well at least for today ;).  I guess I am going to have to start posting more.  That way I can feel more like I am climbing the ladder to success!

I was also surprised when I looked at the link that there were 13+ pages of members with no posts.  Can you imagine what would happen if they all started posting?

It's not weird that there are so many unknown members. Some people just register to gain access to certain features, but only visit the site once, just for registration. Others are desperate for help and ask a question or two, and then vanish out of sight. And just the ones in the first 13 pages stay here and develop their activity.   :)
On another note: I'm very happy that I'm in the Top 40! Number 35, baby  ;D

13 pages might not have posted, but only on page 5 do people do more than 10 posts and only three pages are the members who actually post regularly. So thats 24 pages of once or twice offers.
