Homeless beggar
« on: February 21, 2011, 05:16:42 PM »
I always wished to make a homeless beggar. And today, I did it. But still I want your suggestions on what should I do next. Here is what I did:

I made a sim, Willie Walkston. I gave him all the poor clothes from Late Night. He also has Mooch trait, so that he can beg others for food and money. He doesn't have any house, just a tent and small piece of land. I made him bankrupt from starting, so that he will beg a lot.

I have planned to find an empty place and set up there. Food can be mooched, and fruits can be bought from grocery store. I also think that food can be found by rummaging in garbage bins. I think it will work, but I still feel that I will need to improve my plan.

So can you give me suggestions on what should I do to make a real and professional beggar? :)

I found a challenge on a different website that involved making a beggar. I didn't play it for long because the rules didn't make sense to me.

Anyway, I purchased a lot but never lived there. My sim slept on the chairs at the park and mooched food and money from there. He also picked fruit from the park.

Sleeping on the chairs may take a long time, because you can only nap, which gives you some energy. By the way, are there any harvestable trees in Sunset Valley? In Twinbrook, I used to steal my neighbor's harvested fruits everytime she planted.

I once played a game like this - I think I got the idea from the Proposed Challenges thread.  My sim had a tent from Buydebug and I didn't allow him to earn money or buy anything else until he achieved his LTW.  There are harvestable trees in SV's Central Park as well as other plants that can be harvested elsewhere.  At first he lived on picnics and apples.  As soon as he had enough happiness points, I got him the LTR that allowed him to eat for free at the diner or bistro.  It was fun.  Once he achieved his LTW I allowed him to start earning money and eventually he wound up owning most of the town.

Make sure you give him the Loser trait, just to make his life more miserable and not let him die of unnatural causes. Mooch is also a need. Unlucky and slob are optional.

I think you should do like Schipperke said and not give him anything until he fulfills his LTW, but also don't  give him any LTRs until so either. The idea of giving him a tent is basically a way to let him sleep in the park, so that you don't have to make him sleep in a bench. Also, give him a beard. Beards are a need for any homeless beggars. When he get's his life back on it's feet, you can shave him and go like "wow, you look so much better without that beard".

...

I wanna make a beggar.

Haha, Naga! You sound like you know a lot of beggars. Maybe you may know a few of- ... anyway, there was a story about a beggar and his daughter somewhere on this site or beyond. Pam loved it. I will summon her here to see if she can tell us the title of the story.

There are harvestable plants in Sunset Valley at:
- Central Park
- Outstanding Citizens Warehouse Corp
- Science Facility
- Summer Hills Springs
- Stoney Falls
- The beach behind the Wolff househould (I forget what it's called)
- Langerak Household

There's also another house that has harvestable flame fruit and watermelon, I think. But I can't recall which household. It's near the Langerak Household though.

I may have forgotten some because I'm quite sick, and my heads a mess, but these are the ones I remember!

When I did my homeless character it was before Ambitions so he needed the tent, but if you have Ambitions you could just have your sim sleep at the fire station and not own anything at all.

Alice and Kev is an excellent story. I'll read it later though.

As for hygiene, I made my sim a smelly idiot, so that everyone will go badly with him. His lifetime wish is Swimming In Cash.

I have made a quick plan. From what type of beggars I saw in GTA IV, I'll make sims according to that. They will warm themselves by fire pits etc. Also they will beg anyone for food. And I'll make many beggars.

Please give more suggestions. :)

For some weird reason, I like this idea.  I think Priyansh should suggest this as a challenge.  :P

But I definitely think he shouldn't spend any of his lifetime happiness points until he achieves his wish...although "Swimming in Cash" might be a little overly ambitious.

I would suggest Kleptomaniac as a trait, but you might be too tempted to swipe cars lol.

The idea is to make a beggar, not a stealer. The guy should be too much of a coward to actually rob a car or anything. Besides, he shouldn't have anywhere to place the stuff he klepto-finds.

One thing is realistic: Beggars don't get whatever they ask for every time. Most of you may have seen that sometimes they are refused to be given anything, sometimes they are even scolded by someone who is harsh enough.

So what I did is to make a nice relationship drop with most of the people. Now is begging called hard!

I wonder if you also like building?  Perhaps you could build a homeless hostel?

I don't know if you have seen the film 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (spelt with a y not with an i as it normally is) starring Will Smith.  He made use of a homeless hostel.  The problem was that he couldn't guarantee a place in it every night - likewise, maybe your beggar sim could only sometimes sleep there?  I'm not really sure how you'd build this into your gameplay though.

(I'm not really a computer whiz - it's just that, rather nerdishly, I like using them.)

I experimented with Edit Town, and made a public apartment where everyone is able to stay for as much time as he/she wishes. But that was weird so I made everything as it was.

The problem for sleeping can be solved by taking 4-5 naps until the energy bar is full. And to cover up time, I make my sim mooch and beg. I also bought him a mixology book with all the hard earned money, so that he can work at the local bar.

Well, as for enmity, my beggar sim had been beaten up many times, and he, in return beats and slaps all those who don't give him money. Latest victim: Nick Alto! 8)

Well that's my personality which I show in my games. If things are hard, I will do them as they were. If things are easy, I'll make them hard.

Anybody would be surprised to find a poor beggar living on High-End Loft's modern and expansive equipment. So I bought him a fire pit, so that he can roast food and fish caught by him. Unfortunately Iqbal Alvi comes everytime to the park, and harvests all the fruits. I managed to pick an apple, and plant it in my lot. It will grow and will be roastable.

I always like hitting up parks.  A lot of townie Sims bring picnic baskets.  When I start a new game and I am out of money, I go and invite myself to their picnic baskets.  :)  Plus, if they eat while you eat, your social goes up too.

Sometimes they'll even complain that your Sim is using their 'supply'.

Try getting harvest-ready plants from households such as Koffi, Landgraab and Wainwright (Sunset Valley). Wainwrights have Flame Fruit of normal quality ready for harvest. Use their fridges too. You can use it, but you'll get kicked out if you use it for more than snack purposes. Of course, there are many other choices, I just listed the ones for players with only The Sims 3 Base Game (Vanilla) installed.

That would be nice, but not realistic. If I see a smelly beggar sit on my table, eat my food, spoil my picnic, and not even clean his mess up, I would have him pursued by guards......... :)

I once played a homeless family.

I put them on small lot, no bed, no nothing. The goal was to not starve to death, of course. They couldn't mooch food, eat from picnics, or harvest. My sim was good, so I did this as good sims would mooch food, eat from picnics, and ruin nature. :)

She lived, luckily. She mooched barely enough money (I only did small amount of money) to have a meal at the diner at least once every one or two days. I like it hard, too.

Steal it from where?

From the fridges. If our could break in homes at night and steal up some food, and after that they can eat the food. But that is not possible, I guess.

The nearest thing to 'stealing food' I have found is to harvest food from wild plants and people's home grown plants before owners or public can harvest them. Afterwards they can be eaten raw or roasted on fire pit.

You don't really need to steal food when you can mooch it off other people.

You got me going on this little concept of yours, too lol.  I started my own homeless sim.  Only thing is that I started earlier.  I created a family of 3 with a teenage daughter, put them on the lot, then encouraged the demise of the adults.  I then reduced her household funds to $0, and let her have at it.  The traits I picked for her were Inappropriate, Kleptomaniac, Mooch, and Virtuoso.  I picked Bridgeport, because it just seemed to make more sense that a big city like that would be more likely to have at least some homeless.  And I've learned some very interesting things about how the game works.

Kids will always eventually get caught if they're out after curfew.  Always.  No exceptions.  So sleeping in the park was not an option for my homeless, orphaned teen.  Thus, I had to make her home lot suitable to a homeless person:

It's a tiny, 10x10 lot just up the road from The Grind.  The weirdest thing about this lot is that it gives her the "Decorated" moodlet when she's there lol.

Also, having to devote most of your day to finding ways to see to your sim's needs like bathing, using the bathroom and feeding themselves, it makes getting good grades in school very hard.  When you couple this with the fact that a park bench was not entirely designed for sleeping on, it makes trying to keep a C average a real task, never mind making the honor roll.  Those teenage sims these days just don't realize just how good they have it!  So make them finish their autumn salad, because there's a teen in Bridgeport who never knows where her next meal is coming from.  :P

My homeless teen swiped a set of drums and taught herself how to play, and performs for tips in the subway on the weekends.  She is probably the richest homeless person I've ever heard of (real or not), but despite the fact that she has well over $100K in the bank, she's apparently stuck on her decrepit little lot.  It seems that teens without an adult in the house are unable to move via their cell phones.

I'm finding this to be a real challenge.

I too created a homeless family. I was inspired by the Alice and Kev story. Riverview has a nice park with no amenities but benches that I set as a residential lot. The purchase of the lot + a teddy bear for Megan left them exactly 141 simoleons. I started off with Ted(adult) and Megan(child). For a challenge I decided to get Teds GF to move in with him. They had a daughter named Melinda. Raising a baby/toddler on the homeless lot was a challenge. No crib and the only toy she got was a teddy bear.

I am purposely keeping my Sims poor. The only thing they are allowed to buy is food and replace the occasionally repoed park bench.Once they complete their LTW , they are allowed to move off the homeless lot and start new lives. My ultimate goal is to have 10 generations of homeless Sims.

The hardest part is keeping their needs up so they can accomplish other things. I usually send Ted to the gym to shower and use the bathroom, Megan to the museum (I don't know why it has a tub but it does) and Melinda to her BFF's (who doesn't get offended if she sneaks a shower or nap)

@ Hosfac  I feel creepy even saying it, but brilliant homeless lot.

@ Dreamweaver Oh boy, this smacks of reality, but at least when they get their Life Time Wish they move on to better things. That's better than real life, and I think there should be some kind of bonus where "Elementary school children donate 1000 cans of food, and clothing". Because we could end up homeless for all that my kid's school donations for the homeless  cost us.   ;D The Kid gives up groceries that cannot be replaced, and is a way better person than me.

There is.  Use the "familyfunds" cheat and set the household funds at whatever amount you want.

Till yet my sim is living on mooched and harvested food.

Despite having well over $100k, my homeless teen has yet to spend money on food.  Anything she eats is either a school lunch or was mooched off another sim.

Her daily routine:  Monday-Friday, she gets up and goes to school, and spends a good part of the school day working on her late homework.  Directly from school, she goes to the consignment store where she takes a sponge bath in the sink, gets the consignment store clerk to help her with her with some of her homework (she's usually too stressed to finish it), and either plays the drums for tips in the store or naps on the couch.  Then the police come and give her a free ride to her squalid little lot where she naps until school the next day.  On the weekends, she takes a sponge bath in the bathroom in the big park in the middle of Bridgeport, mooches food of some random passer-by, then plays in the subway the rest of the day until the police catch her out after curfew.  Sometimes, if she's really hungry late at night, she'll try to sneak off her lot to find someone to mooch a meal off of...but occasionally she ends up getting drug back home before she does.

What are sponge baths, by the way?

Oh, and can Slob trait help in making a good beggar?

A sponge bath is when a Sim washes himself in the sink.  With a sponge.

Just what Pam said they were.  Your sims can give themselves a sponge bath at any sink if they have the Inappropriate trait.  The only shower my homeless sim has ever seen was at Elspeth Cook's house, when she invited her over after school (she used it, of course lol).

Oh, and can Slob trait help in making a good beggar?

It would definitely make for a happier beggar.  They won't mind messes as much, can eat spoiled food, and even "lick plates clean" in order to get an extra meal out of dirty dishes.

It's been awhile since I've played a slob.  Does licking plates clean raise their hunger bar?  I don't remember it doing that.  I'm going to play a slob soon because the animations are just so funny.

Then I will try making a slob and inappropriate beggar. The food problem is solved, the sleeping problem is solved, and the problem lefts are toilets and social.

So about toilets, can your sim pee on a wall? I guess not, because I never saw that feature. So where should a beggar pee?

Come on...  that's kind of crude.  And you already know Sims can't do that.  Take your Sim to the gym, pool, park, fire station, etc. to use the bathroom.

Does licking plates clean raise their hunger bar?

It not only raises it, it fills it to full...but it doesn't give the "stuffed" moodlet if they're not hungry.  The reason you may not have noticed it is because typically a slob will grab a plate and lick it clean automatically if they're standing around with nothing to do, regardless of their hunger level.

A way of making money for beggars, is to rummage in rich sims' households. I sometimes find good metals. But I don't sell them so easily. I consign them up.

Did you test this before you posted?  You cannot consign metals.  I just tested it with both raw and smelted metals in my Sim's inventory.  Neither come up on the list for consignment.  Please don't post something that you're not certain of.  We have a reputation for having good and reliable information here.  When you post something that's untrue, it hurts our reputation and that's not a good thing.  If someone were to see your information and take to heart, then find out that it cannot be done, not only will that person be upset at you for posting it, but he/she would be upset at us for allowing it.  Please be more careful, ok?

Once I found a metal from mining. I thought it would be good to sell. Then the idea of consignment came to my mind. I don't know how, but I had consigned it easily without any problem. I don't know if it was only my game having this bug, or something else. I thought that you guys are also consigning the metals.

I didn't tell a lie, because in my game, I had consigned many metals easily in Bridgeport. I didn't say anything untrue. :(

I didn't mean that you had told a lie.  But that maybe you had posted something that you heard somewhere that you hadn't actually confirmed for yourself.  I'd like for you to see if your Sim can still sell metals to the consignment shop.  Give us as many details as you can...  what type of metal, was it raw or smelted, etc.  If you can get screenshots of the metal showing up in your list of things to consign, that would be great.

Well I forgot to take the screenshot, but I can recall some details. It was smelted iron which I got from looting a tomb in France. After returning, I felt a need to get a harvester, so my sim went to consignment store. From there, I got the idea to sell the two extra bottles of nectar my sim had in his inventory. After opening the consign list, I saw smelted iron in the list too, but could not select it and press consign button. I tried very hard to sell, but it could not be sold other than from inventory or buy/build mode.

Not only iron, but many inventions and other sell-able things didn't select in the consign list. Some of them even hid from the list.

I have not tried since then, because it was probably a bug. Hundreds of people have bugs, glitches and problems with the consignment store. Maybe I am one of them too.

Back on topic: So do you know any good back-alleys in Bridgeport? That would be perfect place for beggars.

Yes, but I tried to. But that is applied for all things. Once my sim was preparing to garden. He bought a lettuce and went to consign shop. I wondered if we could consign fruits, so I pressed consign button. Lettuce was in list.

I also tried to sell a gem I had in my sim's inventory. It was in the list. But that was same as metal. I couldn't select it. I tried to sell it again, but this time it was not in list.

What I would like for you to remember from all this is that you shouldn't post something about the game as fact unless you have absolutely done it yourself.  In this case, you said you sell metals at the consignment shop.  Then it turns out that you tried, but didn't succeed.  The important part is that you didn't succeed at it because the game doesn't allow you to sell metals at the consignment shop.  So, you shouldn't have made the claim that you sell metals in that way.  It's all a learning process for all of us.  :)

Priyansh-I do not think Pam is being strict and ruin all the fun.  We are all here having fun and learning at the same time. By saying something that doesn't actually work can really confuse people.  I for one, if I read what you said and went in my game and tried it and it didn't work - then I probably would have started another post asking "Why Can't I Sell Metals in the Consignment Store" (since you said you could), then thinking maybe there is something wrong/glitch with "my game" which isn't fun.

On another hand it would be nice if we could sell metals in the Consignment Store.

There is every need to be strict when you are making things difficult.  However, this needs to be continued privately and not publicly on this thread.  I'll send you a private message.

Maybe this one got enough off topic that it can be locked/moved?  Just saying...

I vote for that, though did find this last post back just today. Priyansh has deleted himself long ago and as far as I'm consirnd there isn't anyone else interested in playing homeless beggars. Topic locked and moved.
