Chapter 5: Definitely not from the Swap Shop! - Part I

Pippa and Sebastian decide to take the free taxi service to their new home, declining Mr Payne's offer of the bicycles. The truth is, neither one had ever learned to ride a bicycle. Why bother? There was always a chauffeur to take them wherever they wanted to go, any time they wanted.

They arrive at their new home.

Sebastian: Will you look at this dump!
Pippa: Surely something so awful can't be meant for sims to live in. Gnomes, maybe ...
Sebastian: Brambles, junk everywhere - and look how off-square that door is! The carpenter that built this place must have been drunk at the time. I'm going to close my eyes and hope it's all a bad dream.

He opens his eyes and the mess is all still there. He gazes incredulously at a pile of discarded tires.

Pippa wanders over to read the inscription on the old sandwich board: "Work Makes Free."

Sebastian: A slogan from the concentration camps. How apt. This is intolerable! I'm going to call Mr Payne-in-the-Neck and give him a piece of my mind!
Sebastian picks up his cell phone and punches in the lawyer's number.

Pippa waits as Sebastian remonstrates with the lawyer, shouting angrily. Finally he ends the call.
Pippa: Well?
Sebastian: He said, take it or leave it. And if we leave, that means we've violated the terms of the will and the money goes to the gnomes' home.
Pippa: The man's impossible. Simply impossible. Well, I guess we'd better look at the inside. Are you ready?
Sebastian: Brace yourself.

They open the door and enter the house.

Thanks very much for the comments, lilygirl and ChronicR. I have the inside of the house ready to post, but for some reason I'm having a lot of problems connecting to the forum today - when I try to load a page or post a comment, it times out. Over and over. The next chapter will be a long-ish post, so I don't want to do all the work only to lose it. I'll keep trying and hoping the connection improves. I'm not trying to be mysterious by holding back, honest.

Well, maybe just a little mysterious!

I'm still having connection problems, for some reason. The SaskTel support guy said there's nothing wrong with my line, and I've just run a virus check which found nothing. So I don't know what's wrong, but I do want to get the inside of the house up. I'm going to break it up into several short posts, so if it times out again I won't lose it all. If anyone is reading while I'm getting it up - you'll be able to tell when the post is finished, so please hold any comments till then. Thanks for your patience.

Pippa: Great balls of fire! It's even worse inside.
Sebastian: Who decorated this dump - Godzilla?
Pippa: Have you ever seen such filthy walls?

Sebastian: Those red stains on the table - do you think they could be -
Pippa interrupts hastily: Paint! Red paint! Don't even suggest anything else!

Sebastian peers at the stove: Where do you suppose they dug up this relic? You're going to have fun cooking on this monstrosity, Pippy-poo.

Pippa glares at him but says nothing. She's busy inspecting a stitched sampler on the wall.

Sebastian: What does it say?
Pippa: Bless this home.
Sebastian: Someone was optimistic. No amount of blessing could turn this hovel into a home.

The house has one finished bedroom and another with no floor or wall coverings. The twins go and inspect the bedroom.
Sebastian: Unusual choice in wall paper. There must have been a special on at the junkyard.
Pippa: Look at those cheap beds! I'll never get a good night's sleep on that! Sebastian, we have a little money left. I insist we spend it on better beds.

After the filthy front room and the dingy bedroom, the bathroom seems anticlimactic.
Sebastian: It's ugly, but I guess it'll do.
Pippa: Like we have a choice.

They return to the main room.
Pippa: What's that stuff on the kitchen counter?
Sebastian: Cleaning supplies. A little present from Payne-in-the-Neck.

Pippa: I hate that man! I hate our parents! How could Mummy and Daddy do this to us! Life is so unfair!
Sebastian: Don't whine about life to me, my girl. It's no fun for me either. I suggest we have a nap and then get started cleaning up this shack.

As the title says, Pippa and Sebastian's new residence is definitely not from the Swap Shop. But that doesn't mean it couldn't become a Swap Shop house. C'mon now, tell the truth - you're just dying to have this one-of-a-kind dwelling in your game, aren't you? Pippa and Sebastian would love for you to have it. ChronicR, Pippa and Sebastian have considered your generous offer and come to a unanimous decision - they'd like to come and live with you, as you are obviously much more reasonable and generous than whoever is in charge where they are currently living!

Chapter 6: The First Day

Pippa and Sebastian awake to the sound of knocking at the door. The arrival of visitors allows the twins to put off the dreaded housework a little longer.

Pippa prepares a meal for everyone while Sebastian gets to know the visitors.

Pippa's first venture into cooking leaves something to be desired. The waffles are burned and taste horrifying. Look at the expression on Christopher's face - he can barely force himself to eat them. Mr. Highly Desirable Dynasty Mate has come to expect better meals than this.

While Pippa washes the dishes, Sebastian goes out to apply for a job. Meanwhile, Christopher Steel stands out in the yard and wonders how anyone could bear to live in such a dilapidated shack.

Those of you who have had Christopher in your dynasties know what a sensitive soul he is. So perhaps you won't be surprised at what he does right after thinking about the house:

That's right, Christopher is moved to tears at the thought of his new acquaintances living in this dump. It's all too much for him. He and Pauline make their excuses and escape.

The shack contains no fun items other than the cheap radio, so Pippa goes to the library to read. Soon Sebastian joins her.

Pippa: Did you find a job?
Sebastian: Cleaning tables at the diner.
Pippa: I thought you were going to apply at the business office.
Sebastian: I intended to.
Pippa: Well?
Sebastian: I got thinking about all our old friends that work there - Nancy, Gunther, Nick - and I just couldn't face them. It's bad enough that people have to see us going around in rags, and no doubt they all know about the dump we're living in. But to have to go to work every day and see the pity and contempt in their eyes - I just couldn't.

Thanks, Ruby! That was my first thought when I saw Christopher's face as he saw what he was being given to eat - this guy is in such demand in dynasties, he no doubt came over expecting better treatment! I don't think he or Pauline will be in a hurry to pay a return visit.
