Diary of a Legacy (now illustrated)
« on: December 28, 2009, 02:58:32 PM »
I started a legacy for the Sims 2, but I never got past generation 2 because I got so bogged down with following the rules and trying to score points.  This meant that every time I got a new expansion pack, I would play with it extensively using another household to get the hang of how it works before risking the new stuff on my legacy family, by which point the novelty had worn off.

For the Sims 3, I resolved not to worry so much about points and just use my legacy family to discover things.  So I'm taking the basic premise: no cheats, the big empty lot, marrying/moving in only Sims I didn't create, aging and story progression on, normal lifespans, randomised traits for heirs, etc, etc....  But I'm not going to be referring to the rules constantly, or keeping score.  My main goal is just to get to 10 generations.

Anyway, my founder is Kit Yi Chan.  She and I go way back to the Sims 1, when I created her to play on a friend's copy of the game.  She also founded my legacy in Sims 2, where she impressed me with her determination and commitment to, well, neighbourhood domination.  Accordingly, I recreated her in Sims 3 with the traits: ambitious, brave, family-oriented, schmoozer and workaholic.  Every incarnation of Kit Yi has been in the politics career track, so her lifetime wish was to become leader of the free world.

She arrived in Sunset Valley on a Monday afternoon, having spent most of her life savings on an empty plot of land.  But it had a beautiful view which not only served to put her in a good mood, but let her see her future domain.  With her goal literally in sight, she immediately trekked down to city hall and got herself a job polishing podiums.  Handily her boss was right outside, so she was able to start schmoozing before even her first day of work.  Afterwards she explored the park, tried out fishing, and ate a hamburger from a carelessly left out picnic basket.  I was discovering that it's actually really easy to get by without expenses for the Sims 3.

Finally, as she was getting tired, I sent her home again, where she planted an apple seed that she found at the park.  Meanwhile, I built her a 3x2 one room house, with the cheapest wall and floor coverings, an overhead light, a door and a window.  She furnished it with a single bed, and she still had a few hundred to spare.

(Player's note: this game is pretty.)

Over the next few days, she settled into a routine of breakfast at the diner and a shower at Le Petit Shark pool centre before work.  Work seemed to be no problem, but her career was only half of her masterplan.  The other half would require a willing male, and after some careful monitoring of the local populace, she picked on Stephen Boyle to be the sire of her dynasty.  They met on Thursday, and things got off to a rocky start as we worked out the new socialisations, but on Friday, she discovered that he was also family-oriented, and their relationship took off.  They talked about children, shared a kiss, she fell in love....  but it was late, so I decided to send her to bed.  After all, she had all day Saturday to spend with him.

Kit Yi had great plans for the weekend: she enlarged her house to 4x4 and bought a double bed.  She had been promoted on Friday, so she even splashed out on a toilet, but we kept some funds back.  After all, we'd need further extensions soon!

The stadium was holding some Amateur Olympics on Saturday, so she headed there first (having failed to figure out how to invited Stephen along with her).  Handily, he happened to be outside the entrance, so she greeted him enthusiastically--only for him to turn away from her kiss.  There was much confusion until the dreadful truth became clear.... he had got married overnight.

Neither Kit Yi nor I had bargained for this aspect of story progression, and we were somewhat outraged.  She made a few attempts to win him back, but he wanted a purely platonic relationship now.  Kit Yi took out her frustrations on the other Amateur Olympic contestants and won some money for her pains, but money wasn't buying her children.  She was back to square one.

She tried to sleep on it, in the hopes that things would look better in the morning, but they didn't.  So, on impulse, she decided to go on a holiday.  She could afford 3 days in Shang Simla, and get back in touch with her ancestral roots, so that's exactly what she did--so what if it left her with just 51 simoleons to her name?  The apple seed she had planted had now grown into a tree and borne fruit, so she took some with her for luck and off she went.

Although the plan was to find herself some nice like-minded young man to bring home as a souvenir, she immediately got distracted by adventuring.  We couldn't figure out where the general store was, so she entered the forbidden palace tomb with no further supplies than her apples.  It was totally unlike anything she'd ever done before--she didn't even have any body skill points.  But she pushed statues, hacked away at rubble and dove into wells until she'd completed the tomb, found a relic and amassed some treasure.

World adventures: more fun than pregnancy!  Still the quest for a spouse continues....

That's a great start on your story!  Thanks for sharing it with us.  By the way, to find the general store in China, click the level up button.  It's on top of a short flight of stairs to the right of the cafe (as best I remember).

This is exactly how I want to play the Legacy challenge thingy :)  This  will be a great feat for me, seeing as I'm a Sims 3 newb along with the fact that what little I've played 3, I've only done so with a single sim in the household and it always had the loner trait to deter the need for even visitors, lol. It should be very interesting to see how well I handle the addition of others to the household as my new lonely sim attempts to grow a family 10 generations long! I hope you continue to update on your story! I envy your story-telling talent! :D

Thanks, Pam!  The trouble with this seamless neighbourhood is that it's not always easy to tell how big the lot is.  I didn't realise that building was even part of the visitable lot!

Good luck with your legacy, Mrs Laphalot!  I look forward to hearing about it!

After the excitement of her adventure, Kit Yi was resolved to get back on track with her legacy.  The next morning, she examined her fellow explorers at the base camp.  Bashir Nahas seemed young and approachable as he danced by the stereo, so Kit Yi joined him and schmoozed for all she was worth.

The conversation was going really well, until she started discussing family and the dread truth became clear.  Bashir disliked children.  This wasn't necessarily an insurmountable obstacle, but both Kit Yi and I felt that it was more trouble than it was worth right now.  In a huff, she stalked out of base camp, and we promptly got distracted by the beauty of her surroundings.  She spent the rest of the day happily exploring the nearby hills, excavating a relic and some solid mercury from a dig site and finishing up at pretty Camp Orchid.  She slept here for the night, a little richer, but no closer to the family she was so determined to have.

Kit Yi now had only one day left of her vacation.  This was it, no more distractions, she was going to find her man.  That morning, she trekked to the marketplace...  Neither of us were particularly fussy at this point, but then he appeared.  I'm not normally one to worry over the beauty of my Sims, but Shen Su was just too attractive to pass up.  He wanted to talk to his brother, the relic merchant.  I had Kit Yi waylay him--his brother, at least, seemed to see where this was headed...

A bit of socialising revealed that Shen was flirty.  This seemed promising, up until he wandered into the general store (player reaction: Oh, so that's where it is!) and started chatting up the merchant there.  After Stephen's abrupt marriage to another, Kit Yi wasn't taking any risks.  She pulled out her bikini and shamelessly monopolised Shen, building up their relationship as high as she could over the course of the day.

She left China with a new friend, and she wasted no time in inviting him over.  He arrived when she returned from work the next day, and immediately ran to the middle of the lot to admire the view.  Kit Yi followed him and did some admiring of her own.  He readily accepted her flirting, and finally she felt the time was right to confess her attraction and have their first kiss.

And things progressed quite smoothly from there....

Shen, at least, was having a blast on his holiday, and showed no inclination to go home.  It soon became apparent that Kit Yi was pregnant, and when she announced the happy news to her lover, he was also delighted.  I breathed a sigh of relief and waited for Kit Yi to do the honourable thing and ask him to marry her.  She did not seem to share my priorities and thoughts of proposing never entered her head.

In fact, when they went out for a celebratory meal, she went home on her own afterwards, leaving her lover to flirt with strange women.  On the plus side, considering her condition, it looks like Shen has no problem with women on the plus side....

However, once he was done flirting, he decided to go back to China, leaving Kit Yi to finish the final trimester of her pregnancy alone.

Kit Yi took this in her stride, she had a day's maternity leave, and she decided to spend it making some friends.  A gang of wealthy criminals lived at Goth Manor.  She was acquainted with one of them and had been given the opportunity to become best friends with him, so she decided to pay a house call.  Every politician needs to get the Mob on their side, after all.

Some schmoozing and a game of chess later, she was officially friends with Swindle.  Not a moment too soon either, for she immediately went into labour.  She panted through the contractions, waiting for her new friend to assist her to the hospital.  Instead he and his brothers stood around panicking.  Finally, Kit Yi gave up and called a taxi herself.  Bloody men.

And so it was that Kit Yi went alone to the hospital to become a single mother.  She gave birth to a daughter, who was named Lara.

In my Sims 2 legacy, Lara was my generation 2 heir, so since this baby was a girl also (I had made sure Kit Yi avoided apples and watermelons throughout her pregnancy), I decided to reuse the name.  The Sims 2 Lara's defining characteristic was that she was pure evil, and I was tempted to choose the evil trait for this Lara also, but my original resolution had been to randomise all heirs' traits, so I stuck with that.  Baby Lara rolled absent minded and easily impressed, which didn't seem too bad to me.  Certainly, she seemed easily impressed with her plumbob, quite happily spending hours lying in her crib and staring up at it while Kit Yi slept.

We had expanded the house for Shen's visit, and we brushed things up a little more for the new baby, so the Chans now had studio-style living quarters.  When Lara's first birthday came around, Shen was invited over for the event. I tried to capture a picture of Lara growing up, but managed to snap the precise moment when she disappeared between baby and toddlerhood.  At least you can see the new living arrangements.

I had not accounted for Sims' unwillingness to squeeze through small gaps, and I ended up having to move the bed outside due to Shen's complaints.  Stupid, high maintenance Sims.  Still, neither he nor Kit Yi minded woohooing under the stars.

Kit Yi, the shameless hussy, still felt no need to make a commitment to Shen.  Apparently she felt a new sense of independence and accomplishment as a single parent.  So Shen went home again, and Kit Yi revelled in motherhood, teaching Lara all the skills she'd need for a successful life.

Of course, it's not easy for a single Sim to raise a toddler, and once Kit Yi's maternity leave expired, things became more awkward still, even with Bart Shannon's willingness to babysit throughout his school day.  I tried to figure out what was holding Kit Yi back from settling down with Shen.  She still spun up wants to hug Stephen occasionally, and I decided that it was time she closed that particular book.  She invited him over, greeted him rudely and told him that she just wanted to be friends.  He did not take it well, but she seemed to be safely over him.

Still, she was not willing to make the next step with Shen.  Perhaps after seeing how much weight Stephen had put on since his marriage, she was unwilling to risk Shen's impressive torso?  Whatever the reason, her next birthday arrived and she left her youth behind her still alone.

To be honest, I can't fault Kit Yi too much.  She was doing a pretty good job of combining career and motherhood--she was roaring through promotions while Lara was building up a solid foundation for her future skills.  But it was hard work for her to keep up with her needs and Lara's and the various household chores, leaving her little time to keep up the friendships she needed.  It was one thing when she was lower down the political totem pole, but now that she was a City Council Member she needed friends and charitable donations to advance.  A mate could take some of the household burden off her shoulders and let her put in some career time.

Kit Yi refused to admit this, but perversely, she was willing to discuss marriage with her daughter.

She'll be on about grandchildren next.

Shen visited often and built up a close relationship with his daughter, but if he wanted to settle down, he didn't let on either.  As for Lara?  She was happy as long as she had her Noo Boo Bear.  Just as well, since I certainly wasn't going to try for a brother or sister with the current setup.

Finally the time came for Lara's next birthday.

She went from a cute toddler to a singularly unattractive child.  Ah, well.  Sims 2 Lara was downright creepy as a child and grew into a swan (albeit an evil one), so I shall not worry about Sims 3 Lara yet.  The important thing was that Lara was now old enough to go travelling, so Kit Yi promptly took her off to China to see Shen.  This time they paid a housecall to him, and this time, rather than look for relationship commitments, I tried to see if Kit Yi would be willing to let him move in.

Kit Yi was amenable to this request and so was Shen!  Woohoo!  Well, not woohoo--he was too tired for that, but Shen Su is at last officially part of the Chan household!

Now Kit Yi can turn the heat up on her career while Lara, who rolled the artistic trait for childhood, can skill build while figuring out her future.

Ha! My jaw dropped when I saw your sims going after Shen Su. The sim I created for WA scooped him right up on her first visit to china :D They are now married but no kids yet -too much travelling and adventuring to do first!

Anywho, I'm really liking this story so far. And I have to agree with you on the Legacy rules/points. For my legacy I'm following the basics but I'm not keeping score or anything and I'm having a lot of fun just getting to the tenth generation.

Keep the updates coming please! :)

Yay! I love this story! I love the picture of them outside on the bed, so funny!

Good luck with your babies. I'm sure they'll grow up to be as cool as their mum!

Keep up the good work!

When Shen joined the household, I was gratified to discover that he was brave and athletic with high body and martial arts skills.  This was probably why he kept being offered adventures in various tombs.  I figured he may as well tie up some loose ends before leaving China, so we accepted them.

However, he felt this was no reason to miss out on bonding time with his daughter.  Lara, absent-minded, artistic, easily impressed and the proud new owner of a camera, was quite happy to do some exploring with her long lost father and take some nifty pictures.

For Lara, floor traps provided inspiration for dramatic lighting opportunities.  Shen felt that they rather detracted from the whole tomb experience.  Still, he would (and did) willingly set off half a dozen floor traps if it would keep Lara's path clear.

Lara was touched by the lengths her father would go to all in aid of giving her a good picture for her collection.

Their quest took up the rest of their vacation--and they were still unable to finish it before they had to leave.  Kit Yi spent most of her vacation talking to locals and fulfilling as many of her wishes as possible.  What with all the romancing of Shen she had done, her charisma was now nice and high.  Cashing in a few reward points on long distance friend and legendary host ought to do her job a world of good.  Sure enough, soon after they got back...

Ladies and Gentlemen of Sunset Valley, your new mayor!

Meanwhile, Lara continued to pursue her artistic dreams.  She had a new lifetime wish now, to have a world class gallery of photos.  I rather rashly agreed to this... in retrospect, I should have kept this wish back for a sim with Photographer's Eye, but too late now.  She earnestly practised her painting though.  Somebody needed to be the portrait artist in this family.

Shen's lifetime wish was to be a heartbreaker.  No dice, Shen.  Any wild oat sowing had better be done, now that he was settling down to fatherhood.  Instead, he got a job in law enforcement, helping to increase the family income.  Now that he had moved in and Lara had outgrown her crib, the house needed an extension.  So it went from studio apartment to a two bedroom bungalow.

However, soon the family returned to China as Shen continued his previous mission and took on new ones, exploring new tombs with his faithful sidekick daughter.

The break from work made Kit Yi remember her family life, and how she hadn't asked Shen to move in just because she wanted an extra pair of hands around the house.  She wanted to be a family.  She caught Shen alone, while Lara was off searching for ores and gems.  She asked if he was willing to be in a formal relationship with her and he agreed.  It was just boyfriend and girlfriend, but it was a start.

Not that Kit Yi was planning on taking things too slowly when they already had a house and child.  When they returned home, she led him out to the middle of the lot, to the very place where they had shared their first kiss.  There, she got down on one knee and proposed.

Shen accepted with delight, and they wed a couple of days later.

(Yes, I know that's the Egyptian dress, not the Chinese one.  It's pretty, and I wanted to use it.)

For their wedding gift, I upgraded their house, but apparently I completely forgot to take any pictures.  It's still not all that exciting, but the little shack they had been using has now been demolished.  Foundations for a much larger home have been laid, and while there are still only four rooms (plus a deck), this is the structure that we'll likely build onto for the rest of the legacy.  The Chans were delighted with their newfound space, revelling in the fact that they finally had a proper cooker and dining table.

And then came the day that happened three times as I went through some crashes.  Most of the photos were taken on the first go through, so if there are any inconsistencies between these and later pictures, that's why.

It was the first day of their married life, and it was also Shen and Lara's birthday.  Shen and Kit Yi got promoted, which was cause for celebration in itself, but after the wedding party, they decided to keep today's events more low key.  Indeed, Shen aged up in the toilet.

While her parents celebrated Shen's elderhood in the bathroom, Lara grew up alone in the living room.

She aged into a slightly chubby and decidedly plain teen.  However, she was a heroine in her own mind, and her artistic side dressed herself up in elaborate make-up and hairstyles.  Seeing Lara's new look, her parents suggested a trip to Egypt as her birthday present.

Lara felt as if she had found her destiny.

It should be noted that Kit Yi was not one whit put off by Shen's elderhood.  In fact, she seemed fonder of him than ever.  I caught her having a little moment at base camp while he was making himself breakfast.

However, this holiday was Lara's, and this time she took the adventures--although Daddy still came along to help her out.

It turned out that Egypt had dangers they'd never dreamed of in China.

Both Sims wanted to defeat the mummy, but Shen was well aware that he was an athletic (if old) Sim with a buffed up body and excellent command of the martial arts.  Lara, to put it kindly, was not in the best shape and tended to forget where she was half the time.  He told her to go outside and pitch the tent.  Daddy would take care of this one.

Take care of him he did.  The mummy disappeared into a pile of dust, and Shen swept that up too for good measure.

However, there was more to Egypt than cursed tombs and treasure.  As Lara delved deeper into the town of Al Simhara, it became apparent that there was something sinister about the company MorcuCorp.  Her adventures led her to questioning the townfolk and discreetly searching their homes.  Her mother, who could make friends in seconds these days, aided her in gaining entry to houses of some of Al Simhara's most eminent citizens.

And, of course, her father saw to it that Lara came to no harm from the afore-mentioned citizens' security systems.

Lara started the vacation a dreamy teen; she finished it by breaking into MorcuCorp HQ and hacking their computer system.  The secret group who had recruited her wanted her to stay and continue their efforts to bring MorcuCorp down, but Kit Yi and Shen drew the line.  The vacation was over, and Lara had to go home and continue her education.

As it turned out, Lara was not the only Chan to have taken something away from Egypt....

Since her marriage, Kit Yi had wanted to have another child, to discover the joys of shared parenthood.  But with Shen an elder and the end of her childbearing years in sight, she had thought that perhaps this was wishful thinking.  She was delighted to realise she was pregnant.

She announced the pregnancy in a rather roundabout way to Lara, who initially got the wrong end of the stick.  After her experiences in Egypt, life and school in Sunset Valley seemed rather mundane to Lara.  Mention of bears no longer made her think of teddies to cuddle but wild feral creatures to be treated with due respect.

Shen was more excited by the news, although when it came time for the baby to be born, Kit Yi found herself on her own again.  To be fair, Shen was dutifully at home, and Kit Yi should have calculated her due date before jaunting off to the park.  At least he raced to the hospital to join her.

Lara meanwhile was seeking excitement and meaning in her life by staying out past curfew and exploring the mausoleum.

All that mattered to Kit Yi was that she had Shen by her side as she gave birth to their second child.  Baby Leo came home from the hospital with both of his parents.
