I admit I'm an RPG and sim girl myself, D2x and Morrowind have a permanent place on my hard drive along with the latest version of The Sims.  It's all the fault of Ultima Underworld, which I never owned and only played once on a friends computer  :o.  It got me hooked and soon after I got UU2, I think I even completed it once.  Morrowind is heavily modded and I've just started D2x Eastern Sun (yes it's all your fault Metro, you mentioned Phrozen Keep in another thread and I eventually gave in to temptation)

Hi, I'm Helen and I'm a gamer!  :D

Guess I will put my two cents worth in.......mainly a simmer here, can't think of money spent on all sims games and other games.  The first computer I had was an Aptiva that was a hand me down.  It had 32 rams of memory and 750 gigs of hard drive space, so when the first Sims came out, needless to say, could not play on that computer, the rest is history.  I adore the sims3 and despite the few bugs here and there, no problem.

Marrowind!  Such a beautiful game!

Ok, so here's my list of time sinks (not including mario & tetris):

Heroes of Might & Magic III
Ever Quest (obsessively for about 3 years)
Civ 3 (used to play hot seat with some friends in college)
The Sims
Dark Age of Camelot
Tropico 1 & 2 (still get the music from this stuck in my head sometimes, and I blame it for my love of latin music)
Sims 2
World of Warcraft (started playing this when it hit live beta with some old EQ buddies, played obsessively until 2.5 years ago)
Marrowind
Sims 3

The only thing I play now is Sims 3.  Oh and Facebook, can't forget FB.  lol  Oh, and ring around the rosey, can't forget that either.

The one thing I miss about MMORPG's is the social aspect.  There are some people I played with who I truly consider to be my best friends.  You spend that much time with people, hours each day for years on end, and you get to know them better than you know some of your "real life" friends.  One girl in particular, we got married at about the same time, were pregnant together, had our babies, talked on the phone for hours, send each other Christmas cards each year... just proof that this whole digital world has changed the way relationships can form and develop over time.  But that's just the Communciations major in me talking. :P

anyone got any good PC MMORPG's? I don't mind if they are around £30 but I don't want any Monthly Fees, Its hard to find them I think!

I kind of like the ancient style ones, e.g magic, mages, rangers, priests, knights, elves etc. similar to World of Warcraft but my Mum thinks thats disgusting they make you pay extra fees. I have been looking at the Guild Wars stuff and see there is going to be a 2nd one....

I tried Guild Wars and didn't like it.  But that's just me.  My personal opinion is that there's a very good reason monthly fees are involved when it comes to MMORPG's.  The maintenance cost alone for server upkeep is crazy, not to mention the development of updates and game fixes.  Whenever I have played an online game that had no monthly fee I've always been disappointed with the quality of the game and the lack of customer support.  In the end, I think the old saying is true, you get what you pay for.  The way I always used to justify the cost: one month's subscription is cheaper than 1 dinner/movie date.  So it's actually very cheap entertainment.

It's not me who doesn't like them, it's the person with the credit card  ;D!

I am now upset.  :(

If you look to the left you will see, my founder just died  :'( He was the first sim I have played since creation until the end (natural causes  8) ) :'( It will probably be harder when Dafy dies because I have played him since his birth. So, yeah...  :'(

If you have a bank account you might want to look for one that has paypal as one of it's options since you upload money from your regular bank account to your paypal account. It's pretty neat for when you don't feel like giving out credit card info and such.

There is one game - MMO - that theoretically doesn't cost anything to play, but you put in whatever cash and can actually pull out cash from the game.  Project Entropia.  It holds ALL the records for most real money spent on "virtual" items, and if you think paying $500+ dollars for a Warcraft account is nuts, the record is like 333,000 yes, a third of a MILLION dollars for a Project Entropia asteroid.  The old record in Entropia was 100,000 for a space station and the guy hocked his house to buy that.  Now that same space station rakes in 100k a MONTH for the guy.  Thats REAL MONEY.  Every time I go to play Entropia though, I keep wondering how much money does it take before you are actually MAKING money playing the game!?!?!

I usually tend to skew towards the financial aspects of most games, and before Blizzard switched to forced Battle.Net accounts to play Warcraft, I had all 10 character slots filled with almost all level 80 characters.  When I deleted all of them in frustration from Blizzards poor global decisions (game world global... Cataclysm is an abomination) I deleted over 250k gold with the characters.  That could be why I glommed on to transmuting in SIMS.  Any time you can find a way to max out the money in a game, I am all over it.

Hello again... I am Tyler and I am the Warren Buffet of video game money.

Eh, gaming is supposed to be fun.  When it becomes a way to make money then it is just another job.  And any job gets boring after a while.  Playing a game is supposed to be fun, not work.

Just my "grown-up" opinion.  You want to make money?  Get a job.  lol

Ok, don't laugh.  The only other "real" game I've played is Legend of Dragoon on Playstation.  My hubby has an old Playstation and some games that he dug out shortly after we got married.  I watched him play and then tried my hand at it.  I was pretty good, especially considering I had no gaming experience except for lots of Pac Man in truck stops in 1981.  Actually, I prefer Ms. Pac Man.  A couple of years ago, I was playing casual games quite a lot.  The kind that are featured on JayIsGames.  I've played a lot of Virtual Villagers and other time management games.  And now there's Sims 3...  everything else pales by comparison.

Well, I have sunk plenty of time in to Dark Age of Camelot, Sims, Diablo II, Warcraft 2&3, Starcraft, Disciples 2, Civ 3, and currently I spend lots of time conquering free online turret-defense games (do a search for tower defense flash games if you don't know what I'm referring to) on sites such as Armor Games and Kongregate.

[p.s.- If you're wondering about my screen-name here, it's an occupational inside joke.]

[p.p.s.- @Pam: I agree, Ms. Pac-Man was better!]

I know I will never forget when the first Nintendo came out, went out and bought it for my kids, they didn't really play, but boy Mario got a workout, played for hours at a time and went to work on hardly no sleep, then the second Nintendo came out and then Nintendo 64, I had all of them and loved that stupid Mario game and of course now I have Wii and the Mario Brothers game, good grief...after reading what everyone else plays, those games sound so lame.  My sister, Bshag and I would sit and play Mario Cart for hours and had so much fun, those were the good ole days.

I do not consider myself to be a "gamer" in the sense that I would consider my Son a "gamer", he loves to play WOW and other similar games like it. He is a video game junkie. I like time management games and hidden objects, games my Son refers to as little "flash" games (whatever that means). One of my favorite game sites is Gamehouse because they offer a free game everyday to download with unlimited playtime. You have to put up with the ads that pop up here and there, but, I can deal with that just to play the full version of the games that I enjoy without having to buy them or pay membership dues.

My boys would always try and talk me into trying The Sims because they knew how much I enjoyed playing Virtual Villagers, Virtual Families and Escape from Paradise. They surprised me at Christmas and bought me the Sims 3 with the guidebook, and I have been hooked since. No other game I've played can compare to it.

I still like to check out Gamehouse every day and download games I would like to play "someday", I just don't know when that day will come -  ;D

Just my "grown-up" opinion.  You want to make money?  Get a job.  lol
Sounds like you have never heard the phrase "Find a way to get paid for doing something you love and you never work a day the rest of your life"

While I haven't yet found anything I love doing that pays me money, I have seen friends of mine say that their jobs don't even seem like work.  When some friends of mine started a game shop, I think I was closer than ever to finding that elusive "They pay me for this!?!?" way of making money.  Shame the economy went bad and the store ended up closing.  I still remember being the SIMS 2 architect for the shop... All the kids wanted me to make a house for them to live in.   ;D

I have heard that phrase, heard it ALL the time from my mom growing up.  But I pretty much think it's a pipe dream for most people.  The vast majority of people in this world work for a paycheck to support their families, not for the joy of their job.  I've been lucky enough to have more options than most and I've had several jobs that I really enjoy, but I only ever made enough to support myself.  If you wanna have a house and kids most people will take a job they're not crazy about because it pays well and provides benefits.  That's reality.

A fellow DAoC fan!  Loved that game!  I had a tank who was maxed out in siege equipment.  My husband played a stealth character and he'd go out and mark spots on the battle field and I'd hurl fireballs.  It was awesome!   Totally missed that in WoW.

I too had a job like what Aria describes...loved it so much but was starving to death so had to quit.  It still is the best job I've ever had in my life. :)

It has always been about the sims "something" for me.  I played Sim City on the old original Nintindo, never could really get into what I call "run/jump/shoot/kill" games.  I think it has something to do with failed hand-to-eye coordination. :D  Anywho, had all the sim games...all sims, Sim City 2000, 3000, 3000 Unlimited and 4000 with Rush Hour, Caesar II, III and IV, Pharoah/Cleopatra and all time favorite Zeus/Posiodon(sp).  Anything that had to do with city-building I was all over it.

I don't regret spending the money on all the games as it was, and still is, a very inexpensive form of entertainment.  Side note:  I still can't beat salty at mario kart. :P

I still randomly fall back on Alpha Centauri. I can't imagine what's so appealing about it, but it's one of those old games where you just sit down and say to yourself: "They really hit spot-on with this one". The graphics sucks by comparison, but the gameplay, AI and the layout with excellent voicecasting (almost equal to Leonard Nimoy in Civ IV) is practically unmatched by 98% of modern-day games.

Leonard Nimoy voice over in Civ 4 was brilliant.

Every time I hear Leonard Nimoy anymore, I think of Sheldon on Big Bang Theory and his reaction to Penny's Christmas present in that episode a while back where she gets his autograph on a napkin.  Sheldon found out he wiped his mouth on it...

"DO YOU REALIZE WHAT THIS MEANS!?!?!?!?  All I need is a healthy ovum and I can grow MY OWN LEONARD NIMOY!!!!!"

ROFL... that scene was too funny.

Big Bang Theory seems to be buried away at silly o'clock and I never remember to either watch it or record it -_-

Hello...I joined up a little while ago, then I disappeared. I tend to do that a lot with the internet lately :s

Re-reading the last few pages of this thread, a lot of you seem to be into PC gaming, what about consoles?(Although a few of you have mentioned Mario/Nintendo games as well) I'm very much a Nintendo latecomer, apart from my Gameboy Colour (various Pokemons, MicroMachines, WarioWorld) I've only gotten into Nintendo games thanks to my DSLite and my Wii. If I had to choose between the two of those, the DS would probably win purely because it's all mine and I don't have to share it with the rest of the family...
I'm not a hardcore gamer, I just like to potch about with games; at the moment my favourite Wii games are Rabbids Go Home because it's hysterical, I love MySims even though that's pretty much aimed at people younger than me and I currently have Okami and Little King's Story to look forward to playing since I've not had time or opportunity to play them!
I owned/own all 3 Playstations; my favourite PSOne games were the very first Spyro the Dragon game, FF VIII - I've never owned VII - and I love the Tekken games :D Ico on PS2 is gorgeous and stunning, Kingdom Hearts I bought really cheap on the Platinum release and I've still not managed to finish it. I'm terrible for starting games then moving onto the next shiny new thing; lost count of the number of times I started playing Tomb Raider on PSOne then getting distracted. Quite possibly why I love Tekken so much, it's great pick up and play. Although I'm frustrated with Tekken 6 because I've only 4 more characters to unlock for the Arena in Scenario mode and of those 4 I only want Yoshimitsu and I'm blinking rubbish on the bit I'm on now.
I owned and loved all the TS1, TS2 and I've only just got WA but no computer to play it on. I'm only nline because my beautiful, reliable 7 year old laptop has yet again outlived another desktop computer -_- Black and White 2 is also brilliant although I can't play that either at the moment. If I could only find the cd I could play Yoda Stories, which was really cute and an enjoyable time sink.
Grr Argh!
