Hey Met, you sound like me.  I love watching that type of stuff on the Discovery and History channels.  I found pigs really interesting.  Like did yall know, the pretty pink piggies that are on farms can turn completely wild growing black hair and tusks in less than a month?!  It's one of the only animals that can do that.

I have a cat, beta fish that has been alive for 3 years (!), and a wirefox/airedale/mutt terrier mix.  I got my dog from the pound and he was already 4 or so years old.  I don't *do* puppies.  My dog - Wilson Williford - was already potty trained.  He'll scratch on the back dog or just stare at me when he has to go.

No it seems more like he is trying to stare me down so he talk to me with ESP or something.  Or hypnotize me to get up and take him out.

Oh man, I would love to have a cat and a dog! At least, two that get along very well. I want a border collie - VERY pretty hair - and a small cat, almost kitten-like even at it's biggest.

Border Collies are awesome dogs and very, very smart. Just be prepared to exercise them a lot or they will destroy your house. :)

Did anyone see that series that was on the History Channel? I think it was called "Life After People"? They were talking about how animals would fare if all the people disappeared. It was really interesting. They talked about pigs and Kimmy is right, they will go feral fast. Cats would be the next to go feral. I think they said it would only take a few weeks for a domesticated cat to go feral, whereas a dog might take months.

The show went on to say that dogs and cats would survive if they were able to get out of the house, but would likely starve if they were unable to escape. Skyscrapers would become "cat hotels" and there would be roving packs of hungry dogs and escaped zoo animals. Actually, I think this kind of describes Newark, New Jersey, now that I think about it.

On a side note, they said that if humans were to disappear, the cockroaches would eventually die off because without power there would be no heat. So there is that.

I'm a pet person.  I have 4 cats and 5 birds.  My oldest cat is Caesar, who is 17 years old and was adopted from a local shelter when he was 8 weeks old.  Apollo is almost 5 years old and is a Hurricane Katrina refugee.  He was 12 weeks old when he came to my area after his first owners got him out of New Orleans with his siblings and left him at a shelter outside the city.  A local cat shelter here went to Louisiana and brought back about 25 cats to be adopted who had lost their homes and owners in the hurricane.  Apollo was adopted for about a year and then taken to the pound when his owner moved and wouldn't take him with her.  He was a large, adult, solid black cat, which was practically a death sentence for him at the pound.  But the shelter who brought him up from New Orleans got him back and then I adopted him.  He's been with me almost 3 years now.  The two youngest cats are Luke and Leia, a little over two years old.  They were abandoned outside by their mother when they were only 5 weeks old and nearly died from the cold and no food.  I took them in and raised them to be wonderful, healthy, and strong Jedi Twins.  My birds are a cockatiel named Niobe and 4 parakeets named Trinity, Morpheus, Link, and Switch.

Wow Pam, I should say you ARE a pet person! The only pets I've ever had are a couple of beta fish, a lizard for about two weeks, and a small turtle for about a week. I soooo, want a dog, but my parents won't let me get one while I'm still living here at their house (still got 3.5 years!).

I've had fish in the past, too.  I used to have a 29 gallon aquarium, but took it apart for one of my moves after having it for about 15 years.  It was starting to have leaks and stuff, plus it's a whole lot of work.  I had a couple of dogs many years ago (chows), but cats are so much better for me because of their independence.  Plus, I just adore cats anyway!

My birds are a cockatiel named Niobe and 4 parakeets named Trinity, Morpheus, Link, and Switch.

Pam, I called my daughter Megan over to read the fact that you have a bird named Link. She got a huge grin on her face because she's the world's biggest Legend of Zelda fan. She has something to say to you:

"Pam, have you ever heard of The Legend of Zelda Series. The main character in those games is named Link." (Megan)

See, if I had a dog, I'd probably play a lot less Sims, or just have my dog around when I do play. I would love that dog to death!

Metro, just curious, but do your daughters or wife play sims as well?

Hey my blind lab is so sweet but I am mad at her right now. She was walking around and just jumped up put her paws on my shoulders and knocked me down. I had a previously broken wrist and she refractured it. My sister is typing this for me (Lanie: hi everyone!).

It's never a good thing when a 60 lbs dog can knock over a 115lb girl.

Ouch! Luckily for me, I've never broken anything *knocks on wood* but that must've hurt.
P.S. Hi Lanie!!

My wife and two older daughters have. The youngest one is just 4. When the game first came out my wife really got into it for a month or so, but hasn't played it in a long time. The two older girls are much more into Wii at the moment. The apples definitely did not fall far from the tree as far as video game enjoyment that's for sure.

P.S. Hi Lanie!!
(This is Lanie) We are back from the doctors and she is on pain meds considering she also broke her right thumb (she's a klutz). Hopefully this doesn't impact her ability to play Sims or she will be really angry.

I've heard of the Legend of Zelda, but I really don't know much about it.  In the case of my Link, his name came from the Matrix movie trilogy along with the names of the other 4 birds!

You named your birds after the Matrix trilogy and forgot to name one Agent Smith!?

Speaking of that cat discussion: Have you guys heard of how a cat mother behaves towards its own kittens? As a mammal it does have a mother instinct and does take care of them, they really do, but if they have been isolated from their kittens for more than just a week, the mother ignores them if it sees them again! This is because if the mother can't find its kittens in a short period of time, it's supposed to move on in hope of getting another litter as soon as possible!
The poor kittens are left abandoned. :'(

Yes, Simbacat!  I ADORE shows like that.  I watched that same exact one.  I also really liked the movie "I Am Legend" just to see what everything looked like in NYC.

Hate it that the movie didn't end as it was supposed to be in the book! (never read it, but heard a brief summary with a better ending) You know, with the zombies winning, building up a civilization and telling the tale of their legend, about the last human that fought back! That's why it's called I am Legend!

I actually did get the book after the movie.  It was more like vampires were always myth and legends.  In the end, he's the last human - him becoming the myth and legend the vampires will tell stories about.  The main character that Will Smith is in the movie is not super smart scientist dude trying to save the world in the book.  I like both versions.  I think I read there will be a prequel to the Will Smith's I Am Legend.  Should be interesting.
