If you liked the movie, read the book. I thought the book was better than the movie.

If you liked the movie, read the bok. I thought the book was better than the movie.

Books require a lot of patience for some people (i.e. me). Especially if one is a slow reader. I'm kind of embrassed in saying this, but I can't even remember when I last finished a full-length book — probably in college when I was required to do so. And something I remember in my ungrad psych studies is that everyone is hard wired differently and excels at different kinds of processing info. My wife and middle daughter are phenomenal readers and can zip right through books. But, my oldest and I don't have that gift. I also think we're more visual and auditory and get more out of that kind of learning. Both my oldest and I have this weird ability to instantly recognize familiar melodies, faces in a movie, etc.

I'm also an avid reader.  My book club actually had a meeting last night, the book was The Piano Teacher, none of us liked it!  So we spent the 2.5 hours of our meeting talking briefly about how we didn't like it, and then went on to discuss our lives.  It was awesome!  You know that you've got a great group of people when the meeting is a success even if the book wasn't!

I haven't read I am Legend, but it sounds interesting.  I'll look for it at the library. :)

I'm what you can call a 'forced reader'. I'm currently in the International Baccalaureate program here in Sweden and we're supposed to read around 20 books during this 2-year program! I don't have anything against books, but after my bachelor's degree I think I'll stay with normal school books for at least a couple of years.

I wonder if they are going to add pets to the sims 3. That would be cool.

Man, I love to read! I read all the time, and feel that I'm missing something when I don't have something to read. I was depressed a couple of months ago when I had two series finished, and the next book in a third series wasn't coming out until spring!

I wonder if they are going to add pets to the sims 3. That would be cool.
I would love for them to add pets to the Sims 3! I've seen some videos online of them in Sims 2, and want to see if they come out for this game.

I am a voracious reader.  My all time favorite series of books is the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey, and recently also by her son, Todd McCaffrey.  I haven't counted recently, but I think there are over 20 books in the series at this point, with three more scheduled to be published.  It is an incredible story and I loudly recommend it!  My next favorites are Harry Turtledove's alternate fiction series, Anne Rice's vampire series, and Stephen King's Dark Tower series.  All great stories.

Metro -

I just finished up the story that started with the South winning the Civil War.  It went all the way through the end of WWII in 1945.  The series is in several sections, but I don't recall their names.  American Empire was one of them.  Has she read these?

Yeah, she's read every Turtledove book he's ever written. I remember her reading the Civil War one. I told her you like him and she said that she loves his stories, but isn't that crazy about him as a writer. She thinks he needs a better editor. Looking at our family bookshelf I'd say her all time favorite author is Diana Gabaldon (Outlander series). In fact, I think our youngest, Claire, was named after the main character in that series.

He's a challenge to read, that's for sure.  But once I got used to him, it was ok.  She ought to check out the Pern novels if she likes science fiction type stuff.  They aren't hard core sci-fi, more like philosophy based science fiction, which I really love.  I'll have to check into the Outlander series.

Sci-Fi really isn't her bag. Though I'm pretty sure she's read the Dragon Riders ones you mentioned. I can't even begin to fathom how many books she's read in her life. Many of them multiple times if she really likes the book. She's got this freakish thing where she basically doesn't have to read individual words to get the meaning of whole sentences. She just sees the sentence. I'm like "huh?" It's just one of those things that can't be taught. Either you can do it or you can't. But, what a gift. And I think my middle daughter has some of that too. I'm still at the "See Spot Run. Spot is a dog" phase of development.

I've heard that reading whole groups of words at a time is the key to speed-reading, but I've never really pursued it.

My favorite authors are Stephen R. Donaldson, David & Leigh Eddings, Gene Wolf, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Storm Constantine.  I go for the "literary" fantasy/sci-fi group (i.e. it reads like there's more going on than just a D&D adventure).

Also, I have 3 cats: Spencer (7), Quentin (4), and Asuka (3).  They're all rescues and named for Winston Spencer Churchill (my father-in-law's idea), Quentin Tarantino (had just seen Kill Bill) and Asuka Langley-Soryu (of Neon Geneses anime fame).  They all have more personality than the majority of dogs I've met (no lie!) and are very companionable.

My favorite author would have to be Janette Oke. Other than her, I just read 'adult' books!

I also like to read a lot. I, like eftyyen, have a preference for Fantasy/Sci-fi, but I also read most other genres, except horror and romance. Those are both in general equally bad to me.

I will be looking up the I am Legend book metioned here earlier. Looks like it could be interesting.

I too am an avid reader, mostly being a huge fantasy fan.  I used to read everything King, Koontz, Patterson, Deaver, etal. ever wrote but after seeing Lord of the Rings trilogy at the turn of the century ( ;D) I adore fantasy, especially the epic and contemporary kind.  I love Charlaine Harris' Sookie novels, Kim Harrison's Rachael Morgan series, Kelly Armstrong's Otherworld series but all time favorite has got to be Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden Files series.  I am just finishing his Codex Alera series and it was great!

I also have a panic attack if I don't have anything to read. :D  That's why I keep the sites, Sci-Fi Book Club.com and Amazon.com close at hand. ;D  (I tried going to the library but they don't have the latest and I've mostly read everything they have in the books I'm interested in anyway...small library. ::))

I don't have much time to read these days, what with my kids and The Sims and all!  So I pretty much just stick to the list that my book club is reading.  A couple months back we read Pillars of the Earth and that was probably the best book I've read in a LONG time!  Truly epic in scale, and the characters seemed so real to me, I plowed through that book because I just HAD to know if my favorite people would turn out ok in the end!  It's a monster of a book though, nearly 1000 pages, but totally worth the ride!

Any Anne McCaffrey book will do me, Dragons, Shell Ships or even some of the one off novels.  Then add in Terry Pratchett, Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, a touch of Kathy Reichs, Jeffrey Deaver and Ellis Peters, a smattering of vampire and werewolf novel authors and now my house is full, and this is just my selection.  Hubby has a wide ranging taste as well and our 2 1/2 yr old is into Thomas the Tank Engine.  There are books *everywhere*.

On a different note, congratulations to Kat on your 2nd pregnancy, hope it goes well. (Hope she reads this thread, I felt it was more appropriate here than in the challenge section).  I have 2 weeks left before baby 2 is due, feel bigger than a hippo and very fed up of being kicked!

I could never get into reading, not sure why though.  My mom and sister loves to read, I guess I could never sit still long enough to read anything, I always had to be moving and now the sims3 takes up alot of my free time and I love playing.  I could sit and watch movies all day though, given half a chance.  Give me a good scary movie and a bag of popcorn and a rainy day anytime and I will jump at that.  Now if there was only any good scary movies anymore.  LOL

Thanks! Also, just an update to my other post, I did get HEL! ;D I was excited about that, but I can't play with it in my game tonight, because I have lots of homework to do >:( Oh well, hopefully I'll have time tomorrow.

I hate reading, and haven't read a non-school book in forever.

However, I am a HUGE sports fan, and read Bill Simmons' "The Book of Basketball".

That is the extent of my reading. :)
