I have two bookcases and have read every single book stuffed into it :) My mum says I should use the library more often because if I buy them I need a new one three days later! I read the last Harry Potter in Two Days!

Any Anne McCaffrey book will do me, Dragons, Shell Ships or even some of the one off novels.  Then add in Terry Pratchett, Tolkein, C.S. Lewis, a touch of Kathy Reichs, Jeffrey Deaver and Ellis Peters, a smattering of vampire and werewolf novel authors and now my house is full, and this is just my selection.  Hubby has a wide ranging taste as well and our 2 1/2 yr old is into Thomas the Tank Engine.  There are books *everywhere*.

On a different note, congratulations to Kat on your 2nd pregnancy, hope it goes well. (Hope she reads this thread, I felt it was more appropriate here than in the challenge section).  I have 2 weeks left before baby 2 is due, feel bigger than a hippo and very fed up of being kicked!

Congrats to you as well Helen!  I'm becoming an aunt for the first time.  She's due March 31st.

Oh!  I love Harry Potter, too!  Both the books and the movies.  I think it's moved away from being a children's story, though.  It's pretty intense in the later books/movies.

And happy birthday, jmz95!

Oh yes, I love Harry Potter movies too.  I didn't think I would like them, but got my mom the whole set of movies.  Great special effects and graphics.

Pam, I was just reading the "off topic topic" before you made this thread.  I am 54 and if you ever want to discuss the good ole days, then I am in. LOL   The young ones now would not know how to act with no cell phones, cd players, IPods, computers, etc.  I could go on.  Seems life so much simpler then and I do miss those days sometimes.  My dad even gave me a car that had push buttons to change the gears and I really liked that car.  No get up and go, but it got me where I wanted to go.  Roller skates with keys and bikes with no gears, you actually had to peddle.  I don't even have to google to remember those times, LOL, and yes, Robert Palmer was great.

I was at the car wash a couple of days ago, in the lounge waiting for them to finish with my car.  I looked around me and the other 4 or 5 people all had electronic devices they were fiddling with while they waited...  a couple of cell phones, one of those new iPads, touchscreen devices, etc.  And there I sat with an old, ratty paperback book that was written in 1969.  It made me chuckle.  :)

I'm like that though. Can't operate an mp3 player, don't know how to text.  Whenever I try to text, it seems the other person never gets the message, so I just gave up on that.  I still don't get how people get the photos off their cell phones.

I do texting from my cell phone.  I type out every word and use punctuation just like I type on here.  Even on a cell phone text I won't use those text short words.  I just refuse!  Lol.

Another 'trend' that goes with electronics with my fellow young people is trousers down around their ankles...  :o I don't do this because it's stupid. And another thing is, they wear belts too.

Ah, the jockey shorts hanging out of the pants trend. Yeah, from a psychology/sociology standpoint it's really fascinating stuff. As in — why the heck did that even start? I mean 20 years ago, that didn't exist. So, why did it start in the first place? Where did it start? Trends are really interesting.

What about big, funny coloured trainers? We have that at my School too!

Okay, I'm probably dating myself, but what are "trainers?"

-----

Never mind, I googled the term and see it's an expression for athletic shoes. Never heard them referred to as trainers.

Ah, I bet that's it. I'm more than 3 times your age and never in my life have I ever heard shoes called Trainers. Then again, I'm not exactly up on what's considered hip language today. I just asked Megan (14YO) and she had never hear the term, but Emily (9YO) reads a lot and has heard the term. Doesn't surprise me. She's smarter than I am in a lot of ways.

Funny how you hardly ever hear about them, but to me sports shoes have always been trainers.

Yep. It's an English term. My smart reader just confirmed that it's used all the time in the Harry Potter books.

I've heard of trainers, but never use it in normal conversation.  In my day, we called sports shoes "tennis shoes" whether they were used for tennis or not.  It became pronounced as "tenny shoes."  Then "sneakers" started to be used more.  I don't know what to call them these days.  I'd probably still call them tennis shoes if I had any.

I truly hate the pants around the knees with underwear showing.  That is the most ludicrous thing I've seen kids do.  People make fun of the clothes from the 1970s with the bell bottom pants, vests with fringe, platform shoes, etc.  But see, thing is this...  those clothes were designed to be worn that way.  It was just the fashion style of the times.  These pants around the knees are a different thing.  They are jeans that are being worn incorrectly.  They weren't designed to be worn around the knees with your hand always holding on to the belt that keeps them up.  Like Metro said, how did this happen??  And do those guys really think it's cool?  Do they not realize that people are laughing at them?

Wow, I'm not old, but I still call shoes tennis shoes, or on occasion pronounce it "tenny" shoes too! I rarely use sneakers, it's just so weird to me. :o
Also, I hate people who "sag" as it's called. It's just so... I don't know, stupid!

Well, I think one person starts it and then another one thinks it is cool and so on and so forth.  I have worked in the prison system for a number of years and even with those stupid uniforms they wear, their pants are around their knees, funny thing is, pants don't have pockets, so instead, they put hands down front of pants, now that is a sight if I ever saw one and they still think they are cool, ewww.

Saltypaws -  I echo your post here about life back then. Life was more simpler. The only thing I have never seen or heard of before was the car with push buttons to change gears. I was born in 63, so that must have been before I was old enough to drive. My first car was passed down to me from my dad as well after I graduated high school and it was an automatic blue Chevy Impala. It wasn't the "hippest" car in town, but it got me where I wanted to go.
I had a moment the other day with my 18 year old son when he came into my room and I was watching TV land and Mash was playing and he stopped and looked at the tv and said, "Man Mom, that show must be as old as Moses." I "glared" at him and said, "I -  am older than that show, and I am not as old as Moses thank you very much!" lol. Boy, sometimes I do stop and realize how much time has changed since the 70's, and I am thankful to have lived during that time. It was an awesome era.

I agree with you on that.  The car was a Plymouth Valiant, I would say late l960's, it was slow, drank oil like crazy and was a strange looking thing, but, my dad gave it to me and I drove the wheels off of it, lol.  When they towed it, I cried for an hour.

You also do not hear of kids going out and catching lightning bugs anymore, sitting on the porch listening to crickets.  I guess I only bring this up, because I use to spend the summers with my grandparents around the Ozarks and we did things then that kids never even thought of doing now.  Putting a long sewing string on the leg of a june bug, talk about entertainment.  Things must change I suppose.

One time in P.E (our shorts don't have pockets in) our teacher told someone to take his hands out of his shorts in front of everyone else! If he thought it was cool everyone else was laughing at him!

Things never change! I'm gonna' be cool forever because this generation's youth must last! 8) Prove me otherwise!

Metro-I'm mostly accustomed to reading Swedish books and even I have heard the term "trainers"; now how does that work for your linguistic theories? ;D We don't have that word in Swedish.
