World Handyman Championships

Goal
The handiness events in the Challenge Tournament have always been popular. This year’s event will be a bit different because it’s not a team event, but rather dealing with a single Sim. The scoring is also different — as opposed to having to upgrade 4 entire worlds as fast as possible, your goal is to upgrade as much as you can in the 4 worlds in the set 4 game weeks. Plus, the Unique Upgrade % scoring component will add a new strategy element. Here we go...

General Challenge Rules
The General Challenge Rules always apply. If applicable, exceptions will be noted below.

Specific Challenge Rules
  • Create 1 Young Adult Sim (no pets).
  • You may not add to the household.
  • How you go about upgrading an object is your choice.
  • If you have the solar panels and wind mill from the Eco Pack, DO NOT upgrade them. It will mess up your score.
  • You are allowed only 3 vacations — length of each vacation is up to you.
  • This challenge ends at Week 4, Day 7, 11:59 PM.

Scoring
Simple, simple, simple for this time around — no spreadsheet necessary. Open up your Sim’s Handiness Skill Journal and note the Objects Upgraded stat. Jot that down and multiply that by the Percent of Unique Upgrades Completed stat for your final Total. Drop all decimals when submitting your score.

Here’s an example: You get to Week 4, Day 7, 11:59 PM and you pause your game. Your Handiness Skill Journal has Objects Upgraded: 138. The Percent of Unique Upgrades Completed stat is 96%.

138 X .96 = 132.48

Final Total = 132

This Event is Now Closed

Does anyone know how not having all EPs installed affects the percent of available upgrades your Sim can do?  For example, I uninstalled LN.  Two new upgrades came with LN:  the Hot Tub and the Dart Board.  I do have Hot Tubs in my game because they came with later stuff packs; I assume I can upgrade the Hot Tubs without LN, but haven't tested it.  I'm pretty sure there are no Dart Boards in my game, though.  Will the missing Dart Boards mean that my percentage of unique upgrades completed will be forever incomplete?  Or will it just mean that I need to do fewer unique upgrades to get a higher score because of the missing objects?

In other words, is the "percent of unique upgrades" based on all upgrades available in Sims 3, or is it based only on what's available in my particular game?

It should be based on what's in your game. So if you have one hundred upgradeable items, and I have two hundred, upgrading one object will be worth 1% for you, whereas two objects will be worth 1% to me.

Dart boards can be upgraded? Learn something new every day.

Just to make absolutely sure - anything goes but cheats and edit town? For all of 2012's events, not just this one?

You're making me quote this already?

Metro, Can I Do X?
Yes, you can! No content from the base game and all expansions is out of bounds. If you’re not opening up the cheats panel, and assuming you’re following the General Rules and specific challenge rules, then you can do it. I sincerely hope the amount of questions and clarifications needed will be reduced with this move towards simplicity.

;)

Sorry, but I have a quick question.  Do the upgrades have to occur on a community lot, or is residential ok too?

There are no restrictions to where you make upgrades.

Doesn't that give people with fewer EPs a big advantage for this challenge?

What about the Premium downloads like the bubble gum machine, solar panels and windmill in the Toyota pack... all of which are upgradeable and effect your personal percentage I believe.

The only reason I ask is its not from an expansion or stuff pack.

I just checked the logic with my mother and technically yes, although we're counting unique upgrades. I assume several are duplicates of another (E.G some random toilet from the base game and the new toilet from pets), so the effect should be small, if anything.

@AbrahamC — I needed to completely delete your last post. DO NOT give players too much information — i.e. where they need to go to find out what needs to be upgraded. That's all part of strategy and what a player has to research.

As to the other question — sure, anything from EA is fair game.

Are the lifetime rewards considered as an addition to the house?

That doesn't matter in this challenge - in this challenge there are no limits on what can be added to the house, other than what may be specified in the general rules.  I think you may be thinking of the Career Caps and New Digs Challenge, and if so, you should post your question there.

I've just hit a small problem. I was doing some testing and I upgraded something and my count for how many unique upgrades went up by one, but my percentage stayed the same! I'm going to try it again in another game file to see if it happens again. If it does, it would mean that even if I manage to do 100%, I won't be given credit for it.

Maybe there are more than 100 unique upgrades

Well, I need to know from other players who are testing if the game is accurately computing stats for them. Maybe it's just a fluke for you.

MarianT — I decided to delete your last post because it did contain some information which would steer some players in a direction to find key upgrades.

@Chuckles — the answer to your question is...

  • How you go about upgrading an object is your choice.

@Everyone — Twinmum has brought to my attention that there are issues with store bought items, namely the upgradable objects from the Eco Pack, such as the solar panels and the windmill. Uninstall these items before you create your scoring file. This is important because otherwise your percentages will be messed up. I've edited the rules. (Thank you, Norma ;))

So just those from the Eco Pack, or all upgradable store-bought-objects? Sorry if it's a silly question. :-[

I've never bought a single store item, so I'm in the dark if they all mess up the stats. You'd only be hurting yourself by having them installed and then finding out later it messed up your score, so if I were you I'd go on the assumption that you should remove all store-bought upgradeable items.

Hmm.. I'll have to delete all the store bought items in my legacy house to make that file playable while I do this challenge but I think there's only a few so it should be okay. Thanks, Metro. :)

Here's a workaround that I use. All of the downloads - store items, cc, etc - are stored in your user directory. Make a new user - I label mine "challenges" - and open the game from there. You will have the game, the expansions, and the stuff packs, but you won't have the store items. Easier than uninstalling and reinstalling.
