Split item stack?
« on: November 03, 2011, 05:02:32 PM »
How can I split a stack of items?

I keep 100+ garlic for fertilizer, and would like to split it into 3 stacks of 30 so my sims can fertilize simultaneously.

There is a tiny triangle at the top left corner of the stack.  Click it to open the stack.  From there, you can click, hold and drag as many of the individual items as you want.  Click, hold and drag the triangle itself to move the entire stack from one location to another (say, from personal inventory to the refrigerator).

It's a bit clunky because there are a few minor drawbacks (or rather, I should say as far as I know, there are no workarounds to what I perceive as drawbacks):

  • You cannot sort or filter the items, nor can you automatically put them in ascending or descending order, aside from the quality sorting. This is a big problem with fish.  I'd love to be able to pull out just the 100 kg+ deathfish caught by Piscatoria and leave the rest behind, for example.
  • You cannot grab multiples within the stack.  You either grab the entire stack or 1 item at a time.  I'd love to be able to take, say, 40 out of the 100 without having to take them individually.

As far as giving part of a stack to another Sim?  What I usually do is to put the entire stack in a container (refrigerator or storage box) and then have each Sim take out as much as they want/need.

Edit:  Cleaned up your list for you. ;) (Hosfac)

That's unfortunate. It takes a long time to individually move fifty items, so I'll just stick to one dedicated sim for fertilizing.  :-\

Actually you can move a number of items at one time.   Hold down shift when you click on the triangle and drag it to the Sim you want to have the item.  Then a window will appear that looks like the one to give a nooboo it's name.  Just say the number of the item you want them to have and voila!

That's one of the most useful bits of information I've learned in a long time!  Thanks, Ricalynn.

Dagnabit!  I tried every button combination I could think of... EXCEPT that one, apparently!  ;D   I don't even want to think of how many hours (days???) I've invested over the last several months dragging stuff one item at a time.

Thanks ever so much, Ricalynn!

Thank you Ricalynn! That was very worthy of the Tips page. Actually, I didn't have a tip about item stacks although I know I've mentioned it elsewhere on the guide.

By the way I love anything that improves that page. I should go back and update it because that hasn't been done in a very long time! You can see the page here: Sims 3 Tips

Thank you! I'd tried shift-clicking the triangle to create a stack, but did not try shift-dragging. This is very helpful! :D

It's amazing how few people knew about this.  I'm another one who didn't.  All hail Ricalynn!  Hero if the virtual people (and especially to their real people controllers)!

Huzzah!

I don't even want to think of how many hours (days???) I've invested over the last several months dragging stuff one item at a time.

 :'(

I tried not to think about it.  Too late.  Too late...

I want you guys to know I checked this thread this morning and now I'm blushing.  I blame all my MMO experience for figuring it out and it never occurred to me that this might not be a well known tidbit so I'm sorry I never thought to share it before.   I do remember being really frustrated and then that combination actually just kind of worked so I've been doing it ever since.

You're all very welcome considering everyone who has said thank you has helped me on more than one occasion with something from this forum/guide.
