« on: January 21, 2012, 09:25:08 PM »
There is a new set coming out called More Magic which has a crystal ball, voodoo doll and magic cauldron in it. Plus for a short time if you put the code moremagic in you can get a 15% discount on simpoint bundles

Looks cool. I know I won't buy it though, not because I don't have the Simpoints but because Magic ain't really my thing.  :D

I guess it will come down to how much it is. While I'm not really into the magic either, I do like the crystal ball.  ;D
I took advantage of the reduction in price for the simpoints though. It's not often that a reduction in price coincides with me actually having money in my paypal to spend, but it happened today.

After looking at the photos I'm wondering if there will be new clothes and some furniture.

The magic stuff I could give or take, but I was thinking about buying Hidden Springs, so the discount on simpoints is very welcome, thanks for the tip!

The new set is now available in the EA store:  More Magic

The set is on sale for 1850 sim points until 9 February, after which time it goes up to 2200.  I'm not all that impressed with the set as a whole, but I might buy the voodoo doll or cauldron separately when they are available.

The set's really good! Here's some pics!

My sim stirring the cauldron, You can also 'open' it so you can add items. For example, I added 3 fishes and got a sleep potion.

And the crystal ball, you can tell your own fortune or somebody eles! You can also get some moodlets from it. Mine got an unlucky moodlet.

And the voodoo doll lets you 'bind' somebody to it and has lots of interations. For example 'cupids arrow'. Your sim will kiss the voodoo doll and the sim that you 'binded' it to will be all 'loved up'

The voodoo doll seems pretty neat. I would need to know more about the things you can make in the cauldron, though. Do you get any bonus interactions for having the spell book too (which is on sale til January 30th for only 375 simpoints)?

You can also 'conjure' things with the cauldron. It also gives you a message with advice. For example, when my sim's potion didn't work it said for me to put a black goldfish in, and sometimes it says but something valuble in like a gem. I don't know how many potions you can make though.

I'm not sure, sometimes it does nothing and my sim shruggs, and sometimes it lets me 'stir' it.

I might just wait til they're sold seperately then. Does the crystal ball do anything else?

The crystal ball's my favourite. It's worth getting. You can either get a good or bad fortune. I got one saying ''watch out for something good in the post'' the next day I got some inheritance money. But I also got a bad fortune which made my sim lose some of it's friendship with a family member. It can also help you get raises and the lucky moodlet. I mostly get a different fortune everytime so I don't know how much fortunes they are.

The cauldron will brew potions but you need to put three of something in it. I don't think it matters if the three things aren't the same just as long as they are the same type of thing.

I put in three fish, same kind and got a sleeping potion.
I put in another three fish but different kinds and still got a sleeping potion.
I put in three metals and got a compulsive hygiene potion.
Three gems got me an emotion potion.

I haven't tried to drink any yet so I don't know what will happen.

I've tried the sleep one, it gave my sim a new moodlet and her energy kept going to red until the moodlet went.

I haven't tried the compulsive hygiene yet but the emotion potion gave my Sim a very amusing moodlet. She wanted to be the BFF of every one in town.

I bought the set because I was curious. For the caldron, nothing happened because she didn't add anything. The crystal ball, she received a life fruit  in the mail. Then I had her use the spell book from the Gothic Library and she summoned a sim who showed up in his pyjamas and used the vodoo doll on him to make him fall in love.

I need to do some more practice; but, it my be quicker than making potions on the chemistry set.

For the cauldron I've done both "brew potion" and "conjure".  After I've use conjure (you then click "open") and I received some Alabaster, Life Fruit, Amethyst, Diamond grapes, lettuce, sausage links, and Jade.  So I think it might be useful for finding stuff.  Random stuff... but the life fruit was a nice touch.  Just letting people know.

The voodoo doll is ok, I see to fail at casting my voodoo charm, but I did get someone to have "hot feet"  (they dance around like they are on fire)

Haven't done enough with the crystal ball.

No one has mentioned the clothes... I LOVE the small ladies top hat  (called "The Dandy Lady")  looks awesome with the steam punk outfits as well as the street couture outfits.

I want two of the hairstyles in it, maybe three I don't know but they don't seem to be available separately. I hope they put them up because the whole set isn't that appealing to me.

I do have to say that when it's time for an EP to come out I usually have a 6 to 8 week stretch of absolute boredom before the release date. I go through a been there, done that  lull. This magic set has gotten me playing again.

At least it should make some interesting stories. I play my game as if writiing a story; but, don't actually post it. My sim just moved to Bridgewater and has a secret she can't reveal. her mother was a witch and trained her in the art of witch craft. She will take revenge on the first person to falsely accuse her and then have fun driving the vampires nuts!

Well I broke down and got the set because I did the math and it would have cost me more simpoints to wait and pick up the 3 premium items and 1 hairstyle I was interested in than to just buy the whole set on sale.

I was most excited for the voodoo doll, but honestly I find it the most boring of the 3 premium items.  Your sim has to bind it to someone who is on the lot with them and then they can do things like bless or curse the bound sim, make them fall in love, give them a hot foot, or make them wet their pants, for example.  As soon as the sim leaves the lot, the voodoo doll becomes unbound.  It is kind of cumbersome to use since potentially you could be binding the voodoo doll over and over again if you want to afflict a sim outside of your active household.

The big hit for me is the cauldron.  My sims will autonomously go over and conjure and I've gotten some really nice collectables out of it - deathfish, life fruit, rainbow gem, some special seeds, and 2 rainbow butterflies valued at over $1000 each!  I've also gotten a bunch of lower quality collectables, but it's like having a present that you never know what you are going to find when you open it.  Also, items seem to appear in the cauldron on their own.  Sometimes my sims conjure and nothing shows up and other times I open up the cauldron when no one has been near it and there are random collectables in it.

The crystal ball is a close second.  It seems to be pretty random whether you get a good or bad fortune.  Bad fortunes seem to give an unlucky moodlet and sometimes other things happen.  My sims have lost a little bit of relationship with other sims on a bad fortune day.  They have also lost about $500 a couple of times.  It's not a big deal for them because they have a lot of simoleons saved up, but it could make things tight if you have a family without much in the way of funds.  Good fortunes give a lucky moodlet and again, other things might happen.  My sims have gotten new friends and quite a few nice gifts (they show up in your family inventory).  On the whole I would say more good than bad has happened for my family from using the crystal ball.

If you have a limited number of simpoints to spend, I'd personally recommend getting the baby swing or the super sleeper before spending simpoints on this set.  But if you have the simpoints and like magic, this isn't a bad investment.

With the crystal ball my sim got this meaage "A friend you have interest in will show up shortly" (or something to that effect). Ten sim minutes later Matthew Hamming ran her doorbell. She had only just met him while playing guitar and he was not a friend. Two days later when using the ball she had the same message, but, he didn't show up. Instead he called her and invited her over.

Edit: happened again. "You have been given an opportunity for a much needed meeting. Someone will visit you shortly" Then a few sim hours later, the man she had the desire for a "first kiss" rang her doorbell.
However, the next time she used it she got "Someone you know will have a bad experience". Then later in the sim day she got a message "Your relationship with XXX has decreased", a few hours later the same message but for a different sim. She lost 2 friends in one day.

Are we going to have a list of all the potions and things the set will do?
