Here you'll learn how traits affect what lifetime wish your Sims get to select in the Sims 3. Combined with my Sims 3 Traits Guide and the other sections in this guide, it can help you to select the perfect trait and lifetime wish combination for your Sims.
Keep in mind that lifetime wishes can be re-rolled by going into the trait menu and coming back to the lifetime wish screen.
Many (not all) traits in the Sims 3 are associated with lifetime wishes. It could be one, or many. Some traits have no connections to any particular lifetime wish.
The traits you select for your Sims in the Sims 3 all add their associated lifetime wishes to a list of possiblities. When more than one trait is associated with a lifetime wish, it's guaranteed to appear (except under special circumstances). For example, Evil and Athletic will always cause Become a Master Thief to appear as a lifetime wish when you're done editing traits.
Many lifetime wishes have a trait that is so strongly tied to it, it will appear even if all five of the other slots are filled with lifetime wishes getting 'votes' from 2 or more traits. For example, no matter what the trait choice, anglers will always have the option of selecting the Presenting the Perfect Private Aquarium lifetime wish, and Evil Sims will want to become Emperor of Evil. They may not appear initially, but they can be generated by re-rolling. The list of possibilities can be more than five lifetime wishes. Take the following example:
A Sim Chooses the following traits:
This Sim will get the following lifetime wishes in the list:
So, if you want to guarantee your Sims will get to choose a certain lifetime wish, plan to choose two traits which share that wish. Unless, of course, you pick a trait that is very strongly associated with a particular wish.
There is one more dynamic to the system: you can't expect to get a lifetime wish to appear when it conflicts with certain personality traits. For example, Sims with the Mean Spirited, Ambitious and Good traits will never see Emperor of Evil come up, because it conflicts with the Good trait. This is despite the fact that combined, the Mean Spirited and Ambitious traits would guarantee Emperor of Evil would appear in the 'list' under normal circumstances.
Another example would be Commitment Issues, Couch Potato and Friendly. The Friendly nature of the Sim prevents them from desiring to be a Gold Digger.
The System is quite complex, and I appreciate any comments, corrections and inquiries about my experiments at my Sims 3 Gameplay and Technical Forum
