The Living Room will often be the place where your Sim seeks entertainment inside the home. As such, comfortable chairs for watching TV or reading are welcome. Nice decorations will go a long way if your Sim wants to entertain.

Television
Televisions in The Sims 3 can be used both for entertainment, education and to work out. Better televisions improve the rate your Sim gains fun while watching and offers more televisions. The cheapest television can be boosted to increase its channel lineup if your Sim has a high enough handiness level. At just $200 it provides 3 fun and exercise television. Still, I find the $500 model the best option. Your Sim can learn gardening, cooking, and raise their athletic level. Later, the High Definition Plasma TVs cost thousands but provide a fast injection of fun so that your Sim can move on to more productive things.

Stereos
The Living Room is generally large and often makes a good spot for a stereo. There are multiple options here, but they all provide 3 fun. Where they differ is the quality of music. When your Sim isn't dancing, they're going to get a better mood boost from a higher quality stereo. The cheap option for $150 is portable so can be taken out for fishing and other activities outside the home. One stereo will do for an entire household with the wire home with speakers handiness upgrade. Speakers can also be upgraded to give better sound. You'll need to choose between the two. Just make sure your Sim listens to their favorite music while they're doing other activities for a better boost.

Seating - Couches and Living Chairs
Couches give you a place to take a nap. Both couches and living chairs provide seating for Sims watching television, eating, cuddling, or reading. Chairs in close proximity can benefit from group activity like watching television. So, a good home theater can form bonds with multiple Sims at one time. When you're shopping for chairs, look around your price point and hunt for values. If a chair has a comfort rating of 3+ and you are about to buy one for 2 that is just a little cheaper, jump up to the +3. You'll get more value for your Sim's money this way. A couch usually provides the best seating value for giving multiple Sims a place to sit.

Video Games
The Living Room buy mode category is the home of video games. There are two options available, a console or virtual reality. Console is cheap and a couple Sims can play at once on a single TV. The VR goggles are single player and provide a variety of strange moodlets when your Sim is done with a Virtual Reality trip.

The Living Room is also home to coffee tables, which go well in front of couches as places for extra decor. They're low to the ground so Sims can see over them. These, along with rugs are great passive boosts to environment that will help to fill out a room. You shouldn't rely only on paintings and statues to boost a room's environment score. You can make the place look more realistic with high quality furniture.

I have a couple of cool new offerings from James Giddings, who not only shared valuable data on transfiguring tiberium, he also gave us a couple of handy autohotkey scripts to share.

Folks who hate the long load time when first starting their game, especially when it comes to loading a Dynasty or Legacy file, will appreciate the first offering. Jagid's Autolauncher is not a mod, but will help you all the same. Run this script from your desktop after a brief and easy configuration, and it will automatically open Sims 3, cancel the video, load the most recent saved game and pause your game when it's done. Automating this process lets you go do something else with your valuable time while the game loads. The second offering is a gem cut calculator, which will tell you just how much profit you'll make from a gem using the various cuts available. Download it from our gems page.

Building Contest #10 is up:

"Once Upon a Time...." That may be the start of a story but it's your job to set the scene! How can we have a story if there is nowhere for the story to be set? What would the Pigs do without their three houses, where would Snow White and the Seven Dwarves live? They need their homes and they've got to be right from a storybook!

Pam's Dreamweaver DecaDynasty Story is up to date. Here is where we last left off. If you ever want to check for the most recent, see her topic on the forum.
