The outdoors tab of buy mode gives you a lot of options for increasing a Sim's experience outdoors by offering them decorative and interactive objects. This is the home to outdoor grills, sprinklers, and fun objects for kids and adults. This is the section where you can find cars and driveways, as well.

Outdoor Cooking
This is one section where you can buy a birthday cake for a Sim. It's also where you'll find picnic baskets. The outdoor fire pit is an interesting buy here, providing a nice place for Sims to hang out after hours. It can be brought to the lake or park as well, as it's portable. You'll find grills here which give you a place to make fresh caught fish and hot dogs for your cooking endeavors.

Outdoor Seating
In the outdoor seating section you can find lounge chairs and benches. These are great outside near a pool or garden. You can make a beautiful seating and hang-out area for pool parties or just enjoying a night out under the stars. I would not go too far up in price when buying these. They don't generally boost the environment score. A picnic table despite its charm apparently doesn't make an area more appealing to Sims. This is a good area to save money in, or go for pure looks. Sims are not likely to be sitting much when they're outdoors.

Cars and Driveways
This section offers up bicycles, too. In general, anything related to transportation will be found here. Note that you'll have to own a parking space for your Sim to purchase a car. Garage doors give you a means of constructing a garage and actually parking a car inside. Simply build a section of structure attached (or not) to your house, throw a roof on it, a door, and a garage door, and you've got yourself a fully functional garage for your Sim. Cars range in price from $950 for the sloppy jalopy (speed 3) to $105,000 for a speed 10 Maragret Vaguester sports car. I would not bother buying anything slower than speed 5. Cabs are free in The Sims 3. However, faster cars will get you there quicker than the cab. Apparently there are no speed limits in the game, either.

Lawn Ornaments
Lawn Ornaments give you unique decorations for the outdoors. You can buy simple things like a gnome or pink flamingo for your lawn, or expensive statues. One of the best values is the Medusa Victim which gives a rating of 8 environment score for a cost of $1650. Don't spend too much on decorating the outside of your Sim's home unless they really spend a lot of time there. And then, focus on decorating the area where they'll hang out. Build mode offers plenty of foliage and flowers for your aesthetics and design needs.

Outdoor Activities
This is where you'll find the fun items for hanging out in the outdoors. This is also where you'll spot the Birthday Cake in buy mode. You can buy a couple of athletic items, a baseball and football, which can help your Sim to raise their athletic level. There's also playground equipment for the kids, like a swing set and jungle gym. Gardening sprinklers are here, which can help you to water plants. Ambitions owners will find the clothesline here, which gives a means of drying clothes without owning a more expensive dryer.
