The Study Tab of buy mode's sort by room offers a large variety of options for increasing skills. A lot of the cooler objects your Sim can buy are found here. A lot of the objects here are crucial to making a den or study for your Sim's household.

Bookshelves
These don't necessarily go in a study, but it's a good place to put them nonetheless to make the room appear more like a traditional study. They can only hold so many books each, so a real bookworm or writer might need more of them to really amass a huge collection. It's a good idea to store old skill books for other Sims further down the line to read. The best value is probably the Constitutional Bookshelf for $545 as it offers a +5 room rating and takes up minimal floor space. You'll pay $1650 for a sturdy shelf, and while it may hold more books it only gets +1 more environment for the cost and takes up more room.

Desks & Desk Chairs
These are for holding computers. You don't necessarily need a desk; a kitchen table can do the trick, too. Still, a desk adds more personality to a study. The drawltop work surface costs $150 and is the cheapest desk, providing no room bonus. The same could be a accomplished with a cheap poker table only it won't look as nice. As far as desk chairs go, the best options are actually dining chairs. They'll do the same job, look better and provide more comfort. If your Sim is going to be a writer, they should have a nice area to write in and comfort will help them from being stressed out.

Indoor Activites
The Barbell on the floor in the study is the indoor activities section and will give you access to the foosball table, treadmill, and weight machine.

Hobbies & Skills
This category houses some of the more useful and specialized items in The Sims 3. A lot of expansion content will get stored here, like styling machines for Ambitions stylists, and instruments from the Late Night expansion. For Vanilla players, this is the place to buy guitars, fish bowls, art easels, telescopes, and chess tables.

I have a couple of cool new offerings from James Giddings, who not only shared valuable data on transfiguring tiberium, he also gave us a couple of handy autohotkey scripts to share.

Folks who hate the long load time when first starting their game, especially when it comes to loading a Dynasty or Legacy file, will appreciate the first offering. Jagid's Autolauncher is not a mod, but will help you all the same. Run this script from your desktop after a brief and easy configuration, and it will automatically open Sims 3, cancel the video, load the most recent saved game and pause your game when it's done. Automating this process lets you go do something else with your valuable time while the game loads. The second offering is a gem cut calculator, which will tell you just how much profit you'll make from a gem using the various cuts available. Download it from our gems page.

Building Contest #10 is up:

"Once Upon a Time...." That may be the start of a story but it's your job to set the scene! How can we have a story if there is nowhere for the story to be set? What would the Pigs do without their three houses, where would Snow White and the Seven Dwarves live? They need their homes and they've got to be right from a storybook!

Pam's Dreamweaver DecaDynasty Story is up to date. Here is where we last left off. If you ever want to check for the most recent, see her topic on the forum.
