What Does Bait Do and What to Use as Bait

Bait improves the quality of fish caught while fishing in the Sims 3. If you use a fish's favorite bait, you'll be more likely to catch the fish at perfect quality. Higher quality bait will boost this further, and you'll be more likely to catch heavy fish. You can harvest bait from gardening, catch live bait (at fishing level 5), or buy bait from the supermarket.

At some point, you will probably see the message that the fish aren't biting. The game will tell you to come back at a higher level or try bait. Bait makes your Sim able to catch valuable fish before they would be able to normally. So, when looking at my Fish List, you won't see levels, and only the bait required. For live bait, use my Riverview and Sunset Valley fishing spots guides in combination with the List of Fish in the Sims 3.

How to Use Bait
Once your Sim has made it to about level 3 in fishing, they can begin using bait. When clicking the water, the choose bait... option will pop up at this point. From there, you can select which bait to use from a list. Your Sim will automatically start fishing once the bait is chosen. At level 5, you can begin to use fish as bait (live bait). This helps to open the ability to catch more of the larger, more valuable fish because angel fish, death fish and robot fish all require live bait. Be sure to have the bait you want to use in your inventory, or you won't be able to select it. Using bait earlier in your Fishing endeavors can help you to unlock the Sims 3's Ambrosia Recipe.

A piece of bait will eventually be used up, so if you plan a long day fishing, bring multiple items to use as bait so that you don't run out.

To help you choose the best bait, this is the Quality Scale for fishing (and many other skills' items) in The Sims 3. There are worse quality ratings than bad, but I'll not bother to list them as you'd probably not use a horrifying fish as bait anyway:
Bad, Normal, Nice, Very Nice, Great, Excellent, Outstanding, Perfect

To discover a fish's favorite bait, you can look at the bookstore under the fishing section for bait books to all fish or, once your Sim has caught a fish using a certain type of bait, it will then appear in your fishing screen in the skill journal. Certain fish can only be caught in specific locations. Look to the Fish List page to discover where to find, with help how to catch, the most rare fish in the Sims 3 using their favorite bait.
