About the "odd" plants they came up with for gardening in the Sims 3: Yes, you can plant some very weird things, including the item duplicating Omni Plant. You can learn how to plant cheese and eggs after you've completed the Uncommonly Good gardening opportunity to take twenty excellent plants, or sometimes a lesser number of perfect plants, to the restaurant.
Once you've done the first Gardening opportunity in the chain, look for a second opportunity, Outstandingly Rare, that calls for 10 excellent (sometimes better) cheeses (allows your Sims to plant both steaks and burgers).
The last gardening opportunity your Sim needs to take out is The Omnificent Plant, which calls for delivering ten awesome steaks. Completing this final Gardening opportunity is how your Sim can learn to grow the Omni Plant. It's not a hard opportunity to do, it just takes patience on your part and a time commitment from the gardener. Once you've completed the final step here, you can order the omni seeds for your gardening use by clicking the Sim's mailbox.
How to get the Gardening Opportunities required to plant Cheese, Eggs, Steak and the Omni Plant
Take note before wondering why this opportunity hasn't appeared. It may not be possible to get the opportunity until level 8 gardening. Why? It requires level 8 gardening to plant eggs and cheese.
I can't give advice to getting any particular gardening opportunities, or any other skill in the Sims 3, but there are some general tips that can help you with getting opportunities in The Sims 3 generally. If you want a specific type of skill opportunity, it's first best to not have any other skills competing for the random chances an opportunity pops up. So, if you want an easier go at getting the gardening opportunity to plant the Omni Plant, don't have too many other skills than gardening. You'll be more likely to get the uncommonly good, outstandingly rare, and omnificent plant gardening opportunities you want if you clear others, as many (all?) opportunities in the Sims 3 are one-time deals. If you fail one, you can get it in the future. You just can't complete the opportunity again.
Also, keep in mind that Sims 3 characters can only have one skill opportunity of a given type at one time. So, you can only accept one opportunity at a time. In that case, only accept an opportunity of another skill that you know you can complete quickly. Otherwise, keep the box clear for the odd chance the gardening opportunity you need will be available! To clear a skill opportunity, right click it in the opportunities tab.
Most players who complain about it taking a long time to get the Omni Plant aren't keeping this in mind, and have spread out their skills too much. Continue gardening and soon enough you'll be able to order plenty of omni plant seeds and make tons of money duplicating things like death fish, high value skill books, and anything else your heart desires.
