Writing Challenges, Opportunities and Wishes

This Sims 3 Guide was originally written for the PC and Mac versions of the game, but also will help owners of the console versions - PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Please remember some info or numbers may have changed.

Keeping up with Writing Opportunities and Wishes
There are some nice wishes associated with the writing skill. You'll get simple ones like write five novels, and more interesting ones like 'write a novel worth at least $350 in royalties'. These go over very well, and can swiftly move a Sim's lifetime reward points toward being able to afford the Acclaimed Author reward. Bookworm helps too, as your Sim can wish for trips to the library (helps to prevent stir crazy) and wish to read a total number of books. This is very easy with the library's quiet environment moodlet, which raises the speed Sims read books. Combine this with bookworm's speed boost and it really won't take long for your writer to read five books.

Writing opportunities will come early if you hammer the skill. I was tasked with writing a sci-fi novel and a biography very early on. Biographies take a long time to write but provide nice cash along with an excellent relationship boost with the subject.

Writing Challenges
There are three challenges for the writing skill.
Speed Writer makes your Sim write books faster. This is accomplished once you've made 30,000 money in royalties. Keep writing high per-page value books (see the book type list)
Prolific Author is completed at 20 books written. Your Sim will write more hits and best sellers overall. Try to write four books of each type of low-page count book. Unlocking children's books would help this (again, see list)
Specialist Writer, the final challenge, is unlocked once you've made five books in one particular genre. It boosts the likelihood of hits and best sellers in that genre. I recommend, as I said before, that your Writer specializes in masterpieces.

Writing offers some very easy opportunities and wishes to help your Sims succeed.Lifetime Wishes Associated with Writing
Illustrious Author: Maximize the painting and writing skills. It's a cool wish, but Sims can only really have one revenue stream at once. It would be better to pick one or the other.
Professional Author: Earn 4,000 a week in royalties. Now you're talking. A great goal for a writer. This should come up if your Sim takes the bookworm trait. By the way, the $4,000 a week your Sim wants from this wish? It's just a drop in the bucket compared to what a great author can do money-wise.
Star News Anchor: Reach level 10 in the Journalism Career. Honestly, I think the journalism career is the worst career in The Sims 3, so I'd probably prefer Professional Author.
