The Sims 3 Expansion Pack Installation Order

Expansion/Stuff Pack Install Order and Manual Uninstall of EPs/SPs

This page covers the install and uninstall process for The Sims 3. We'll show you the proper install order and what to do if you cannot get a Sims expansion or stuff pack cleanly removed from your system. The information on this page comes from our technical help board on the forum. My goal here is to combine information, giving you a helpful guide to visit when you need to reinstall your games.

The Sims 3 Installation Instructions
This section lists the proper install order for The Sims 3, Expansion Packs and Stuff Packs. Installing each piece of this massive game in the proper order is recommended for a stable experience.

According to Electronic Arts, you no longer need to install The Sims 3 Expansions in a specific order. I would still recommend following the list below just to ensure everything works properly. While we are told it is no longer necessary, we have a game that has a lot of bugs and I personally will not deviate from this order. All need to be put in anyway, so why not install in the order they were released?

During the install process, you will be prompted to patch up between Expansion Packs, which is necessary. Go through the motions, and after the hefty install process is over you can again play The Sims 3!

Install your games in this order, and everything should be fine:

First you'll of course install The Sims 3 Base Game, then install:
The Sims 3 World Adventures Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Ambitions Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Late Night Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Generations Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Pets Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Showtime Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Supernatural Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Seasons Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 University Life Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Island Paradise Expansion Pack
The Sims 3 Into the Future Expansion Pack

Installing Stuff Packs
Installing Stuff Packs in any particular order has never been a big issue as they don't make huge modifications to the game as Expansion Packs do.

Installing and Uninstalling Worlds:
Worlds such as those found on the Sims 3 Exchange, and Barnacle Bay, can be installed at any time. They don't modify the gameplay, so they are also easily removed.

Uninstalling The Sims 3 Manually
Normally you can uninstall The Sims 3 and any of the expansion and stuff packs through Control Panel using the program to add/remove programs. However, if the uninstall does not go well, you can uninstall each of the games manually. Below are links to the EA Customer Support site that give specific instructions on how to manually uninstall the games.

Uninstall Sims 3
Uninstall Sims 3: World Adventures
Uninstall Sims 3: Ambitions
Uninstall The Sims 3: Late Night
Uninstall Sims 3: Generations
Uninstall Sims 3: Pets
Uninstall Sims 3: Showtime
Uninstall Sims 3: Supernatural
Uninstall Sims 3: Seasons
Uninstall Sims 3: University Life
Uninstall Sims 3: Island Paradise
Uninstall Sims 3: Into the Future - not yet availalble

You can search EA's support Site from any of the links above if you for some reason need to manually uninstall any of The Sims 3 Stuff Packs - many support articles on other topics are also found there. If I found myself in a situation where I had to follow all these processes, I would probably just reinstall my computer's Operating System rather than go through all the steps you'll find in each of these. It would be much faster. Hopefully, you only need one instruction set.

I just installed seasons but now I'd like to purchase an earlier edition. How would that effect my game play?

If this game is anything like its predecessor it shouldnt, all it should do is ask for an update... I am not sure though, I have always installed by order.

Yes it will effect your gameplay, I've been there. It will not load your family and will make your seasons expansion uninstall from your gameplay.

I first purchased generations and then recently bought ambitions. Do I have to uninstall generations for the games to work okay?

No, it shouldn't matter.
Though that is an option, just installing the expansions as you get them shouldn't be that impacting on your game.
And in case I misunderstood your question: You can have any/all of the expansions installed at the same time.

Michel'Angelo, that's fine, you'll just have to run it off the seasons disc.

No, you shouldn't have to download them in order, it doesn't effect the installation in any way.

Yes you do have to install the games in the order that they are released and that you have to use the latest expansion to run the game

It's always been this way with Sims 1 and Sims 2

Hope that helps

you are wrong, according to EA you have to install them in order as they affect varing files in the game. so order is critical. just think of it this way if world vac and island para. both alter a specific file. if you install island first then world adv. you would over write what is needed for island. ORDER IS CRITICAL

Actually, after installing them in order for years now, I recently went to EA's site and according to them, you do NOT need to install them in any specific order. Is this an error on their end, or did they change something? Below is the link to EA's install/download page for sims 3:

I already installed Late Night. If I want to purchase Showtime EP, does it effect my game save? Can I travel to the new town from my previous saved game?

If possible, I don't want to start all over again.

Jacob, yes you can add any expansions to your game and your game will not mess up. You will still be able to use your same family. Its simply an upgrade to what you already have all expansions are.

If you don't already have the base game of The Sims 3 installed, you need it. The expansions and stuff packs won't work without the base game being installed.
