The Sims 3 Political Career Track
This Sims 3 Guide was originally written for the PC and Mac versions of the game, but also will help owners of the console versions - PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Please remember some info or numbers may have changed.
To have your Sim apply for a job in politics, have them head to city hall. This job has a nice pay rate at the upper levels, and gives a couple of social abilities in the form of pep talk and inspire teens. Political Sims will end up with a lot of friends due the to the high charisma and campaign fundraiser requirements.
There are several other features of this Career. At higher levels, Sims will wave at you. There are a couple of ways to make money if you want to be sleazy as well. You'll be offered bribes, which if you take can cause your career to end. Similarly, you can siphon funds from the campaign and add it to your Sim's bank account. If you've been doing good at raising campaign funds, you can stand to make a lot of money this way. However, getting caught will end your career in Politics.

Good Traits for The Sims 3's Political Career Track
Charismatic
The Charismatic trait will help a Sim to raise charisma more quickly. They'll also get some additional social interactions which can help to make friends faster. This is important, because of the friend requirement of the charisma skill. This trait will also help ensure the leader of the free world lifetime wish appears as a selection.
Friendly
Another trait that will assist your Sim in making friends for the charisma requirement. It will also help your Sim to build relations for asking for campaign contributions from other Sims. This is an important metric that resets each time your Sim gets a promotion.
Schmoozer
Schmoozers are great at making friends at work. While it's not necessary for a politician to be friends with their co-workers, befriending them while on the job will go a long way toward meeting relationship requirements for charisma.
Party Animal
Party animals throw better parties. Since you can invite over loads of Sims at once to get campaign fundraising through the throw party interface, this will come in handy. Your Sim very well may get all the necessary campaign contributions from a single party if it's a great one.
