The Laser Rhythm-a-Con is a new Musical Instrument that Sims can learn to play and may earn tips from. This Guide will teach you the basics of this new skill. No known Traits seem to boost skill gains, although Virtuoso may help. This new instrument is played through beams of light and buttons a Sim will press with their feet to create music. While the music is enjoyable, please note that you cannot use the Laser Rhythm-a-con in a band. It does not fit into the musical stylings of the others, or well, was not coded to interact with Late Night much like the Fit as a Fiddle Violin introduced with a Sims 3 Store set.

Leveling the Skill: Classes and Books
You can't read skill books to learn the Laser Rhythm-a-con Skill, you must play it. You can find the item in Buy Mode > Sort by Room > Study > Hobbies and Skills for $950. A class can be taken at the Theater whether your Sim is in Present or Future Worlds. Children may not use the Laser Rhythm-a-con, but Teenagers can. Only Plumbots with the Musical Machine Trait Chip can use the instrument, along with all others.

The Sims 3 Into the Future's Musical Instrument: The Laser Rhythm-a-con - Playing for Tips

New Musical Compositions
You will learn new musical tracks as you reach level 6 automatically. Others are learned from Books that can be bought at the Book Store, but only in the future. Click the Laser Rhythm-a-con to learn a new track when you own a book and are the appropriate level or click the book itself.

Using the Skill
Since you can't play in a band and it's hard to get Tips, Serenading and entertaining friends and family are the main uses of the skill. You can change the laser harp's primary color or the color when they pick the strings to match your own style.

Skill Unlocks
As you level the Skill, you will unlock only one new Social Interaction for your instrument - Serenade, and that comes at level 6. Otherwise, you are merely unlocking new musical tracks. Here is a table of the various musical pieces you can learn. Some are very beautiful, but you'll have to try the skill and hear them for yourself to find your favorites:

Laser Rhythm-a-con Skill Unlocks
LevelSkill Improvement
0-3Nothing but slight sound improvement
4Better Skill Animations
5Play for Tips, learn Better Plucky than Good from Bookstore
6Serenade Interaction (Romantic), learn Dungeon Crawler from Bookstore, automatically learn Airships with Neon Billboards, My Summer with Cecil, and Cloudscapes in May
7Learn The Chattering Classes from Bookstore, Learn A Country Drive, Dragon Scales, and Noodling the Ramen automatically.
8Expert Skill Animations, Learn Ghost in the Moors from Bookstore, Learn The Third Extinction and Building a Clockwork Unicorn music automatically.
9Learn Whistle While you Twerk from Bookstore, Automatically learn The SLow Creep of Fog, Polonaise in A-Flat Major, and Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor.
10Learn automatically the As Steel Bison Awake, Slow Pistons, and Wubbing in B Flat
The Sims 3 Into the Future's - The Laser Rhythm-a-con is best played in Bridgeport's Subways
Bridgeport's Subways are your best destination after refining skill with the Laser Rhythm-a-con

Playing for Tips
I will inevitably have to rewrite this part. Playing for Tips is a bust for me. I earn no money and Sims simply pass by, while Plumbots have a look but pass on. I have not received one tip that did not involve playing in Bridgeport's Subway System - which performed wonderfully, but you might as well be using any instrument in that case.

According to code, your base is 3x Skill level for Tips, plus 2 for every time you have played a composition. If you want to permanently raise the amount your Sim will earn for tips, simply play compositions over and over once level 5-6 to level the skill and continue on until your tip amounts are satisfying. You can grow it as high as you like, but it will take quite some time. The chance you earn a tip doubles from level 5 to level 10. Some Sims are more likely to tip - Good, Friendly Sims and those with the FutureSim Trait, which means Sims from the Future, essentially.

Laser Musical Skill Challenges

Master Laser Rhythm-a-con Artist
Learn every track and you'll unlock an extra track: Stomping on Flutes

Laser Rhythm-a-con Star
Just like Guitar Star, this Skill Challenge's description is deceptive. Playing at ten parties and venues essentially means you need to do 10 skill opportunities, and wait on those to pop up. When done, you will get a boost to the amount of Simoleons earned from Playing for Tips and any future Skill Opportunities.

Money Maker
Once you've earned $25,000 playing for Tips, you will learn another Master Track.

Based on the little experience I've had playing with this new instrument, I agree that it's hard to get people to stop and listen, especially in the present. I was going for the Legacy statue for this when I discovered something that seemed to help. I haven't done a lot of testing, but there are two traits that seem to help with the challenge of getting Sims to stop and listen, Irresistable and Natural Born Performer. Having one or both traits seemed to make drawing a crowd easier as well as helping to earn tips from playing. Like I said, I haven't tested it much, but it seemed to help.

Any ideas as to why I can't complete Laser Rhythm-a-con Star achievements? I tried doing lots of opportunities, but nothing seem to help. Any help appreciated.

The only opportunities that count towards this are ones that award money. You may need to use cheats to force some opportunities to be able to complete this.

For tips, the Lifetime Reward "Attractive" seems to also help, although it usually attracts the opposite gender. Hope this helps a little.

I have now had over 10 skill opportunities and am maxed with my LASER RHYTHM-A-CON skill. But still have not completed laser Rhythm-A-Con Star or Artist. Do we _Have_ to travel to the future to complete this? I still have massive issues with traveling into the future and coming back might never happens if I get there. Plzz help if you can! thx

Thanks for pointing it out. I am going to do a page about Legacy Statues themselves, then tell people a little about them on the pages they belong and link to the Statues page so people can easily see how to get all of them. So yes, this will ultimately get updated with Legacy Statue information when that page is done.

I can't see it either - that or the visuals on the time machine. :/ Did you ever figure it out?

My sim and her plumbot creation (without using the trait chip) are both lvl 10's but they achieved it in the present. How do they 'unlock' the extra track?

They alternate playing at the Bistro between 8pm and midnight and collect SS 1200-2000 each night.

It's kinda funny to watch them swap the Performer Legacy title each time one of them plays in front of 10 people!

There's a master track that unlocks once your sim has earned $25,000 playing for tips.
