Challenges and Opportunities

This Sims 3 Guide was originally written for the PC and Mac versions of the game, but also will help owners of the console versions - PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii. Please remember some info or numbers may have changed.

Challenges
There are a three cooking challenges in the The Sims 3. Here I'll give you some tips to help your Sims complete them faster.

  • Star Chef: To complete the Star Chef challenge you must prepare 50 total meals. Cooking to raise your skill level will help meet this challenge faster. It makes meals give a better moodlet boost when eaten. Keep in mind that some meals take longer to cook than others. Autumn Salad can be created very quickly with a food processor. Drag the food to the trashcan as they fill up the counter space with salads. You can practice, raise the cooking skill, and eventually your Sim's autumn salads will always be perfect.

  • World-Class Chef: This is an increase to 75 meals cooked. It's no more difficult than the first. Doing this makes your chef cook all meals faster.

  • Menu Maven: Learn every recipe to unlock this. Since every recipe can be purchased at the store, this one is a cinch. Also talk to friends with the cooking skill and 'share cooking secrets' to occasionally pick up recipes, and spend time having fun watching cookin' cable. Your Sim just might learn a recipe from TV.

    Opportunities
The Cooking opportunities in general can be a bit tougher than other skills'. There are several types of opportunities for the skill: deliver ingredients, prepare food and deliver it to a building, or prepare group meals and give them to other Sims. There is a lot more required interaction with these opportunities.

I recommend when your Sim needs to deliver a group meal to another, you invite them over, and cook the meal while they're visiting. Drag it to your inventory from the counter and select the action by clicking the other Sim. This makes it easier, and if you need to whip up a second batch to appease them, they're right there and waiting.

Bad Apples - A Tad Bit Batty
After some testing, and with the help of a friend, we've decided to give this opportunity a big thumbs down. A tad bit batty's objective is to deliver ten bad quality apples (on a time limit). When Sims plant the tree, and wait for it to grow, there is a chance it will only be able to produce one batch of apples. This scenario is completely blown if your Sim has the gardening skill, or woe, the green thumb trait or super green thumb reward. The one batch of apples on a level 0 gardener produced 1 bad, and 3 normal apples. The time limit was up before the next batch of apples could come.

So, we can only hope that EA changes this opportunity. The bad apples have caused more Simmers headaches than any other opportunities. This shouldn't be so difficult, or the time limit should be removed. Also if they want to keep it 'bad' apples, they should consider making the seed you're given putrid, so that it will be easier to get bad apples. You wouldn't think it would be this hard.

Before people start emailing me, I want to say flatly and with 100% certainty that skimping on watering, or not weeding the plant will not lower its quality. Additionally, it will not help you to give the plant bad quality fertilizer. This just reduces the strength of the fertilizer, it doesn't harm the plant in any way. Death Fish won't work either. Omni plants are also finicky, producing some higher quality apples when fed a bad apple. It's unfortunate that I have to do this, but if you're being bothered by this opportunity, I say you cancel it until further notice.

About the bad apples opportunity. I tried two times to get the bad apple, but when I planted it, its quality became "very nice", because I have the gardening skill at level 10. After thinking about it for a while, I tried to solve my problem in another way. With cheats enabled, I shift-clicked on my workplace (culinary career) in the map view and forced opportunities. When they came up, I accepted only the "bad apples" opportunity. Then I cancelled it. Do this 9 times and you receive a bad apple each time. Don't cancel the opportunity the tenth time and go to work... You'll complete the opportunity ;)... Hope this is helpful for someone...

Buy 10 apples. Set them on the counter/tables/floor and wait till they spoil to bad quality (takes about 6-8 hours with grocery store quality apples).

Pocket the apples and turn them in.

Food produce spoils and loses quality while on counters or laying on the ground. But doesn't while in your inventory or refrigerator.

The Supernatural expansion gave us an easy way to prepare for the bad apples opportunity. When a witch with low/no spellcasting skill conjures apples, you'll get a mix of poisoned apples and bad through horrifying apples. Just have a new witch spamming Conjure Apples, toss the poisoned ones, and plant all the horrifying, putrid, and foul apples (with no gardening skill of course). You'll then have a whole garden of rotten apples!

The bad apple challenge I figured out u can only beat it by using the omni plant. When u feed it a normal or worse Apple it will grow putrid apples.

I discovered this today, if you have the University expansion you can buy the science research station and do a horticulture experiment on normal quality apples and get bad quality apples if the experiment fails. I tried this with no science skill so I am not sure if it would work if you have already got that maxed out. One time the experiment destroyed an apple but only once out of five tries.
