The Sims 3 Island Paradise Expansion - A Scuba Diver and friend encounter a Mermaid under water
Even a chat underwater will raise your Scuba Diving Skill

Leveling the Skill
You can take a Scuba class at the Science Facility on Isla Paradiso. Afterward, you'll be stuck clicking the water to Snorkel until you are level 2 and can attempt your first Dive Spot, Rocky Reef. This is more exciting than Snorkeling and gives a lot more experience in the skill. Skill is gained gradually while your Sim is under water, no matter what they are doing.

With each level gained in Scuba Diving, your Sim will be able to stay under the water longer on a dive and require less downtime from decompression between dive sessions. The decompression moodlet gets much shorter, and you can swim for up to 7 hours at level 10 in Scuba Diving. Gaining levels will unlock Dive Spots and allow your Sim to be capable of opening better treasure chests and following caves' alternate exits.

Treasure Chests
There are seven Treasure Chests that can be accessed by Diving. It is the best way to get them, but you'll need to level up. Treasure Chests can be found at level 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. It's a bonus for leveling up. Treasure Chests do not respawn. You'd have to reset them manually by cheating.

Skill Unlocks
Here's a table of skill unlocks and the timers for your Sim's underwater breathing ability and the resistance to decompression they will gain with each level in Scuba Diving. Dive Spots that you unlock will be indicated as well as important chests. When you first unlock a new dive spot after Rocky Reef, there will always be a chest you can open, and another that is accessible with a level up. Each level of chest gets better and better.

Scuba Diving Skill Challenges

Pearl Diver
When you have collected 50 sea shells, either from picking them up on the ocean floor while scuba diving, or spotting them while snorkeling, you will unlock this Skill Challenge. It gives a 50% bonus for the sell price of all sea shells. This will shoot you up the Scuba Diving Self Employment career and earn you some bonus Simoleons. Use Snorkeling to get this challenge faster, as it's hard to spot the sea shells that spawn a bit too rarely on the ocean floor.

Underwater Spelunker
Use the Explore option on underwater caves 15 times to complete this challenge. Your chance of finding collectibles while Exploring a cave will double, making it a reliable source of income.

Savvy Snorkeler
This pairs very well with Pearl Diver, and you'll likely earn this on the way to completing that Challenge. Allow your Scuba Sim to Snorkel for a total of 40 hours and the chance of finding collectibles while Snorkeling will go up 25%. It's far less dangerous than Exploring caves as you don't need to go underwater where Sharks may attack.

How do you reset a treasure chest, manually, on a mac laptop? I have a mouse to use if needed...
Admin:
You have to turn on testingcheats then you have to click on the ground of a diving spot and "Buy on this lot" then shift click the chest to get the option to reset.

I just reached week 4 in my diving game file and the chests reset for me automatically today.

How do I scuba dive? I only seem to be able to snorkel. It says I am now able to drive in this area and that area but where are they?
Admin:
The Dive Spots are only available in Isla Paradiso. You can see them randomly around the map with flippers sticking out.

Hey Carl, Found some info for your guide that our missing, In the scuba skill you need to take your sims oout to deep (Dark Blue) Water as they need alot of space to swim around, If they try scuba diving near shore as would be normal they simply cancel the action with the "Cant Get there/Cant do that" Red marked thought bubble. My Wife was trying to get started on scuba diving and I had to trawl all over the internet to find this out when usually when we have a problem we come to your site and find our answers. Hope I helped you out a bit and you update your guide to add this at the start of the Scuba Diving and Snorkelling topic as I saw alot of other people are having the action cancelled problem.
Admin:
This information has recently been discussed on our forum. Apparently there may be a glitch or something going on with the athletic stkill as well.

Technically you just updated the guide by leaving this comment though.

I can't seem to reach level 6 of the diving skill. The skill meter seems stuck on 5.3, and no matter how much time I spend diving and snorkeling it doesn't rise. I started a new game with a new Sim and the same thing is happening. Any ideas what's going on?

I have also had my chests reset. I have been using the same sim for about a week my time now and he is lvl 8 diving and has opened the chests in the diving spots several times. I just wait several sim days and go back and am able to reopen them.

Aiki says...
Are you sure that the treasure chest doesn't reset? It's because my sims were diving and found a chest which he opened and got a map piece, the trouble is that my other sim also got a map piece and you can't transfer them from one sim to another so I can't complete the map to the island...
Admin:
There is a glitch that can cause the chests to reset but we don't know how to make it happen. Carl was unable to duplicate it while myself (Ricalynn) had it happen more than once in a 10 week game period. An easy way to get that map piece into one single inventory would be to kick out the other person. Then you could very easily just ask them to move back in.

Aiki says...
Guess I'll try that then. I have tried resetting the treasure chest manually but it doesn't work and while I have cloned the treasure chest everything but the map pieces was in it. Probably because the map piece already have been found and are in use, so to speak. It just seems silly that you have to kick part of you household out to get the pieces in the same inventory.
Admin:
The reset command didn't work in buy mode? Did you remember to assign the correct treasure? The reason I ask is because I was able to get the map fragments multiple times but like I said we think this was a glitch.

Are Sims able to access the islands that are covered by clouds?
Admin:
Only once you've done whatever it takes to uncover them. There are 8 islands and there are 8 ways to find them plus the LTR and the cheat. If you don't want to go through the work of having to find out how to do each one (we'll have a guide soon) then you can buy the map LTR or just type in "discoverAllUnchartedIslands" for all of them to be revealed. When you reveal the islands they automatically become private lots for your active family.

Unless there are two treasure chests there, my sim was able to open the chest at Davey Jones' Locker at level 5.

There are two chests. One is available at level 4 and one is available at level 6. See pictures for reference to location.

Hello!
My sim has diving as her life-long wish and one part is to sell diving collectibles for 40 000 simoleons. Where do I sell them to in order to start on this quest? I tried selling silver within my sim's inventory but it was still on zero.

okay, so i tried to snorkel with multiple sims, and they don't seem to get it down. I've tried to find the class at the science facility and it doesn't pop up. i tried making my sim snorkel for days in a row and the skill still doesn't show up. can i get some help?
Admin:
Have you tried different locations and possibly doing a factory reset folder to see if it works there?

I tried to take the scuba diving class at the Science Facility, but there is no option for it at all. Is there any other way you can learn how to scuba dive?
Admin:
If you have Island Paradise installed then it should be at the Science Center. You can also try snorkelling in a pool.

Hey, I've had treasure chests respawn every week after one of my sims collects the treasure. I've been able to do this with land and diving spot chests
Admin:
In that one week time are you changing life state status, adding new people to the house? and did it happen consecutively every week? how many weeks did you test?
4th July 2013 11:13pm
Josh says...
I've had consecutive times when I have opened treasure chests but not changed the life state status or added new people. From what I can tell, it always takes at least one sim week for treasure to respawn and it is always the same consecutive treasure. Just last night I had my teenage sim reopen treasure chests she had not opened since a week before.
Admin:
Is your teen Sim the one that opened the chests initially?

ZanathKariashi says...
Chests do reset on their own but it's fairly inconsistent about when. I've tried to do some tests to determine the when, but it seems pretty random IMO. Sometimes they can reset pretty quickly, other times they won't reset for a week or two.

At the very least you seem to need to be away from the lot itself for an extended time for it to reset.

They never reset when I had my house boat docked above them, but once I'd moved it to a dock for a week or two and focused on other activities for awhile, all of them had reset when I went back to do some more diving.
