The Power of Traits
Many traits can positively or negatively impact influence certain social interactions. Here I'll give you a rundown on some of the traits that influence conversation the most. Note that there are many more traits that give social interactions than are listed here, greatly increasing the talking options between Sims. For example, Photographers from World Adventures can Talk about Photography, and Cameras. These types of social interactions can impress Sims who have related traits. That will make the relationship meter move much faster toward best friends. Keep that in mind as you view this list -- to include everything like Photographer's Eye would be far too exhaustive. We won't go into detail about those conversation socials, but some warnings and tips about certain traits is helpful.
You can learn a Sim's traits in several ways. Sims with the observant Lifetime Reward will learn some traits of a Sim upon talking to them. The primary way however is through simply using 'Get to Know' in a conversation. Your Sim will talk to them and learn something new about the other Sim. This is valuable information for building a friendship when you take the right social actions. Vampires can also learn a Sim's traits with their special abilities. To view a Sim's known traits, hover your mouse over their portrait in the contacts panel of the interface. You can also see how many more there are to discover, which is helpful for completing the Personable Charisma Challenge.
Charismatic
Charisma is overall the most powerful boost to making friends in The Sims 3. Taking this trait will allow your sim to talk, hug, and various other social interactions, and make your Sim better at other conversation actions, all the while boosting the rate the Sim learns the Charisma Skill. This trait can also remove penalties for repeating social interactions too many times in a row. No one wants to hear a Sim talk about the same old boring thing again and again.
Friendly
The Friendly trait makes friendly interactions more likely to succeed, such as compliments. Sims with this trait are open to repetition, so you needn't worry about using the chat or ask about traits socials too often.
Flirty
Flirty Sims are great at everything romantic. A flirty Sim hitting on a hopeless romantic would be almost certain with just a little effort. This will help your Sim fall in love faster.
Great Kisser
Great kissers give the recipient a positive moodlet, good for getting Sims in the mood. They'll also boost the relationship much better with kisses of all types.
Schmoozer
These guys are the masters of the compliment. They'll also do better asking for things from other Sims. Schmoozers would make good Mooches, and pleasing the boss or a Snob takes little effort.
Good Sense of Humor
Jokes move the friendship bar pretty well for such a short interaction -- when they succeed. At that, this will make them succeed more often! Sims with this trait are likely to win over friends due to this trait alone, so long as they have a sense of humor.
Good
Good Sims are quick to make friends. They don't get offended very easily. After all, anger can be evil! Talking to them makes other Sims comforted. Your Sim's friendly interactions will have a passive bonus because of this.
Other traits can impact how a Sim perceives a conversation. As your Sim talks, or performs other actions, they may get angry, bored, excited and your mean Sims may even enjoy being mean so much they get a positive moodlet from it. Some topics are off-limits for some Sims, and they'll have no patience for talking about them.
Can't Stand Art
Don't talk about art to Sims with this trait.
No Sense of Humor
Your Sim's jokes will fall flat on a Sim with no sense of humor. They'll find you boring.
Easily Impressed
Easily Impressed Sims can compliment more often in conversation. This makes them good at befriending Snobs, who are full of themselves. They're also impressed by Boasting, so use that social interaction on them when you can.
Hopeless Romantic
These Sims are most open to romantic interactions. When your Sim wins his heart, it's hers forever.
Unflirty
If you're playing an unflirty Sim, you'll have fewer available Romance interactions. On the opposite end, Unflirty Sims will need to be closer to a Sim (talking, higher friend bar) before romantic interactions like kissing will be successful reliably.
Workaholic
No big surprise here, these Sims love talking about work!
Some Sims are just jerks and doing one or more things, like talking about a subject unappealing to them, may set them off. They can be flat out rude about some things. We understand the Sim who just doesn't like talking about art, but is it really necessary to be Evil to the core? Sometimes, you may even be controlling the wicked little Sim.
SnobSnobs will not be impressed by Boasting, however they are quick to accept a compliment as they know they are incredible Sims.
Hot HeadedSims with this trait are quick to anger. They're great targets for enemies, as getting a rise out of them isn't difficult at all.
InappropriateThese Sims can get by with a lot. They manage to do rude things to other Sims and not face severe consequences for some of them. They're great at being insulting. Inappropriate Sims can also perform interactions like kissing much earlier in a relationship.
GrumpyGrumpy Sims can be hard to please. They don't boast, and are quick to get into a poor mood. You should try to make them happy if you want to befriend them, as they may not be the experts in having a good time.
Mean SpiritedThis is the total opposite of Friendly. These Sims love making enemies and getting into fights (which they usually win).
EvilEvil Sims can make other Sims wary. They're great at starting and ending fights. As with above, your Sim will get along well with other mean Sims.
